1) ‘OTHER': = Adjectif indéfini + nom (singulier ou pluriel) => comme tous les adjectifs,
il reste invariable.
* On utilise 'other' = (un/ une) autre, pour faire référence à une personne ou une
chose différente de celle déjà mentionnée ou connue.
- Pete and Paul decided to watch their series on TV whereas the other boys
went to play football outside.= Pete et Paul ont décidé de regarder leur série à la
télé alors que les autres garçons sont allés jouer dehors au football.
* Lorsqu'il y a deux éléments, 'other' (one) peut représenter l'alternative.
- He has two kids; one is a teacher, the other one is a doctor.= Il a deux enfants ;
l'un est professeur, l'autre est médecin.
* ATTENTION ! Employé avec un nombre et un nom, ( trois autres (élèves) ),
'other' précède le nombre + nom et se comporte alors comme un adjectif:
- There were eight volunteer students to paint the wall, six were girls but the
other two were boys.= Il y avait huit volontaires pour repeindre le mur, six étaient
des filles mais les deux autres étaient des garçons.
2) THE OTHER(S) = PRONOM INDEFINI : (Il remplace un nom et en prend ses
caractéristiques) : il est précédé d'un déterminant. Il prend la marque du pluriel :
'the other one' = singulier => the others/ the other ones = pluriel
- Some travellers were watching the video, the others/ the other ones were
trying to sleep before the landing! = Certains passagers regardaient la vidéo, les
autres essayaient de dormir avant l'atterrissage.
3) ANOTHER: adjectif ou pronom indéfini, lorsqu'il est employé avec un
déterminant indéfini, 'an + other' s'écrit en un seul mot : ANOTHER.
- No, thank you. I don't want this cake... Can you give me another chocolate one,
please? = Non, merci. Je ne veux pas ce gâteau ; pourriez-vous m'en donner un
autre au chocolat, s'il vous plaît ?
N'écrivez JAMAIS ***an another... comme je l'ai vu si souvent dans des
copies ...
4) EVERY OTHER DAY: 'every other...' signifie 'not each one in a series, but every
two' or ‘every second' c'est-à-dire 'un sur deux'.
- Every other day of the week means, for example: on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday. = 'Un jour sur deux' veut dire, par exemple : lundi, mercredi, et vendredi
...
5) ON THE ONE HAND, ON THE OTHER HAND... : est une expression employée
lorsque l'on compare deux éléments différents d'une situation :
- On the one hand, he's easy-going and pleasant, but on the other hand, he can
be so jealous that he's very hard to live with! = D'un côté, il est facile à vivre et
agréable, mais d'un autre côté, il peut être si jaloux qu'il est très difficile à vivre !

EXPLICATIONS :
1) Un autre= another (en un seul mot) + nom.§ Another ( written in one word) + noun.
2) Les trois autres : il suffit d'ajouter l'adjectif numéral en le plaçant APRES "other"
=>The other three. § If you want to use a numeral adjective with "other", you must
place the adjective AFTER "other".
3) "A n'importe quel autre moment" = any other moment ; "Other" est ici un adjectif
indéfini placé devant un nom ! Aucune difficulté ! § "At any other moment" : the
indefinite adjective "other" is placed just before a noun.
4) "Every other week..." = une semaine sur deux : la première semaine, la 3e, la 5e, etc.
§ "Every other week..." = "every two weeks", or "every second week", which means the
first week, then the third one, then the fifth one, etc.
5) "The other girls" = simple emploi d'un adjectif indéfini, au singulier bien sûr,
malgré le nom au pluriel, devant un nom. § "The other girls"= use of the indefinite
adjective (in the singular) in spite of the noun which is in the plural.
6) "L'autre enfant"= the other kid", the other one.(pour éviter la répétition du nom) §
The other kid" is a nominal group in which other is an indefinite adjective => the other
one. (in order to avoid the repetition of the noun "kid").
7) "The other four photos" : contrairement au français, "other" se place devant
l'adjectif numéral. § "The other four photos": contrary to what happens in several
European languages, the indefinite adjective is placed before the numeral adjective.
8) "D'un côté, ... d'un autre côté..." = "On the one hand, ... on the other hand...". Ces
deux segments de phrase traduisent une alternative. §"On the one hand, ... on the
other hand..." expresses an alternative. The two parts of the expression are not always
expressed clearly. Sometimes, one of them only is given.
9) "Some others" est l'emploi du pronom indéfini "the others" qui est mis pour le nom
