MultiDuty® + Fine filter – Installation, Operation & Maintenance Manual Rev.00 – August 2021
7
2 GENERAL INFORMATION
2.1 OPERATION PRINCIPLE
The MultiDuty® is an automatic selfcleaning viscous air filter
using a rotating curtain of metal panels as the filtering media,
requiring little maintenance. The filtering curtain is composed
of overlapping panels, type DD, which cover each other in
such a way that the air has to change four times direction in
the inlet and as well in the outlet curtain. The panels are die-
stamped from sheet metal with louvres turned at an angle in
the direction of the airflow. The filtering is obtained by a film
of Viscosine on the panels that retains all dust particles that
will touch them. The panels are mounted on both sides to an
endless chain that will be moved a few centimeters, controlled
by a timer at 15 minutes intervals, in order to renew
completely the filtration system in 24 hours.
A proximity switches control correct rotation of DD panels.
The filtering surface will be renewed after the panels in the
rear curtain have passed the outlet opening. When the panels
enter the reservoir at the base of the filter, they separate and
hang widely spaced for ease of cleaning as they pass through
tile Viscosine bath. The dust will be washed off and will
deposit on the bottom of the reservoir.

2.2 AAF VISCOSINE OIL

AAF’s Viscosine has the following advantages:
• Capillary action of the highly viscous adhesives enables it to cling to the panels and thoroughly
saturate each dust particule
• Accumulated dust will not break away and blow downstream
• Maintains its dust trapping characteristics over an extended time scale
• Non-toxic and odourless

2.3 CONSTRUCTION & OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT

The MultiDuty® is constructed in steel plate for industrial application and consists of the following
elements:
• A rigid metallic frame consisting of a top assembly a base reservoir and two side panels
• A filter curtain consisting of metal panels which are supported and moved on each side by a chain
• The base reservoir containing the Viscosine for impregnation of the panels
• An electric motor of 0,18 kw with reducer which rotates the top shaft through a ratchet wheel
• A control box IP65 protection containing the timer and the terminals
The MultiDuty® is available in standard sections with widths of 914, 1219, 1524 and 1829 mm.
The height of all sections ranges from 1526 up to 5488 mm, with increments of 100 mm.

4 OPERATING PROCEDURE
4.1 PRESSURE DROP AND FILTER DIRTINESS
Filter dirtiness is to be checked regularly. The following chart give average of the final recommended
pressure drops for air velocity at 2.15 m/s.
Initial Pressure Drop [Pa] Final Pressure drop [Pa]
Item
Clean Recommended

Weather Louvers 30 30

Multi-Duty Filter 150 180

Fine filtration stage (option) 100 450

Overall Filter Resistance 280 660**

** Viscosine oil or fine filter to be changed

i The lifetime of the Viscosine oil and filter is depending on the site and dust load. For this
reason, we recommend checking of pressure drop rise of the final filter stage on a weekly basis during
first year in order to determine the right maintenance schedule.

4.2 VISCOSINE TANK FILLING

AAF supply initial filling as per filter size. Some viscosine will be lost each time tile sludge is removed.
Width MD 3' MD 4' MD 5' MD 6'

Tank capacity 95 liters 125 liters 155 liters 190 liters

It is recommended to keep the proper level. Average annual usage is approximately 10%.
When the oil bath filter is starting for the first time or after long stopped periods, check the oil level
inside the tank.

i Proper operation of MultiDuty® filter is guaranteed providing that AAF MA or BA Viscosine is

used.

4.4 INITIAL START-UP AND SWITCH ON THE UNIT

Operate the filter during 48 hours before starting the engine.
Push the on bouton a light should be on. If there is no light please ensure that emergency stop is off.
Push the test bouton during a minute, you should see a curtain rotation.
If there is no movement please do the check list step again, if there is still no movement contact AAF.

i During standby periods (engine stopped), oil bath filter must be switched on during 48 hours
every 2 weeks (to allow the filter make a full revolution). The rotation of the DD Panels in the
Viscosine oil will allow their maintenance and protection. For Marine environment, oil bath filter
must be switched on during 48 hours once a week (to allow the filter make a full revolution).

5.2 SPECIAL MAINTENANCE
5.2.1 SLUDGE REMOVAL

Take the necessary precautions to prevent spreading of oil over the MultiDuty® maintenance area
when using the sludge scraper and sludge pan. Before removing the sludge, if there are traces of oil
in front of the MultiDuty® oil tank which would make the floor slippery, sponge and wipe them off.

the rotation cycle starts every 15 minutes

To facilitate the clean operation, you can use oil cleaner system
ViscoKleen (option).
ViscoKleen advantages:
• Compact and strong
• Mobility
• Clean Multi-Duty® oil filter maintenance
• Extend oil life using
• Multi-Duty® efficiency conserved

5.2.2 DRIVE MECHANISM AND MOTOR

NOTE 1: the machine generating the air flow

must be stopped
NOTE 2: make sure the maintenance area is sufficiently
lighted-up.
A team of two operators is needed to perform the
maintenance on the drive mechanism and motor. Cut
the voltage supply and isolate the machine to comply
with the safety rules of the site.
Take the necessary steps for works (maintenance) above
ground level (scaffolding, secure ladder, harness…).
For maintenance:
• Lift up the cover of drive mechanism
• Remove the cover
• Left the cover go down smoothly
Reducer: Periodically check that exterior surfaces are clean.
Reducer is lubricated with SYNTHETIC OIL: no maintenance is necessary, as it is lubricated for life.
Motor: The motor has no grease tips. The drive motor, according to the manufacturer’s instructions,
is forecast for a life time of 20 000 hours (at 40° C) in operation. For intermittent operation, we
advise to replace the motor after a 10-year service. NOTE: Because of the size of the motor and its
working conditions, we do not advise the replacement of any internal parts.

5.2.3 DD PANELS

NOTE : the machine generating the air flow must be stopped

The DD panels are made of steel which edges are rather
cutting. Protect the hands in order to prevent cuts.
a. Inspection of DD Panels
Visual inspection of panels shall be performed
by opening an inspection hatch every 4000 operating
hours.
b. Removal of DD Panels
Operate from the back of the filter (air outlet).
• Remove the two lowest curtain rod supports (the
bracings if any) and the curtain rods and put them
aside.
• Dismantle the removable DD panel guidance plates [A], one on each side of the filter (use a
screwdriver or a pincer).
• NOTE : once released, the DD panels of the lower curtain part fall downwards.
• Lift up and remove the panel [B] and maintain it in the upwards position with a wooden wedge
[C] on each side.
• With a long-handle screwdriver (or a pincer), open the chain link to free the panel hook.
• Repeat the operation on the other side of the DD panel
• Remove the DD panel and put it aside (Pay attention to the air direction of the slot: either right
or left).
