that help us to specify which thing or person in a group we are referring to in particular. (this/that/
these/those)

How to use demonstrative pronouns and determiners in French
Demonstrative pronouns replace a noun, while demonstrative determiners accompany
the noun they modify.
• The French demonstrative pronouns simple are celui/ceux in the masculine
and celle/celles in the feminine. If the noun does not appear explicitly in the sentence,

• Regardez deux chemises,__celle_ (la chemise) qui est rouge.
• Voici _ces_________amis, ____ceux____ qui sont intelligents sont japonais.
• Ces voitures sont magnifiques, celle de Victoire est plus chère que celle de Pierre.
• In French, there are also compound forms of the demonstrative pronouns: celui-ci, celle-ci,
celui-là, celle-là. The forms ending in – “ci” indicate something that’s close to the
speaker (from ici – here).
• The forms ending in – “là” indicate something that’s farther away from the speaker (là-
bas – there).
Example:
• Ces peintures sont très belles. Quelles peintures aimez-vous? Celles-ci ou celles là.
• Je préfère cette robe – ci , celle -là est trop courte.
• Regarde ces deux livres d’images ; celui -ci est plus cher que celui – là.
• Note :
• When there is a verb after a blank or when the sentence finishes with the
blank we use pronom demonstratif compose i.e -ci and là
• If there is a prepositional phrase, relative clause or the pronoms
(qui/que/ou/dont etc) just after the blank we use pronom demonstrative
simple i.e – celui, ceux, celle, celles
Example:
• Regardez ces deux chemises, celle qui est rouge .
• Regardez ces deux chemises, __celle -ci ______est plus cher mais celle -là n’est
pas.
• Achetons ces fleurs celles du jardin.
• Achetons ces fleurs celles-ci sont plus jolies que celles -là
