TOPIC: Les VERBES (Verbs)
In french, verbs are divided into three categories, depending on their ending.
Ist category: -ER ENDING VERBS Eg: regarder (to see) (More than 90%)
IInd Category: -IR ENDING VERBS Eg: finir (to finish)
IIIrd category: -RE ENDING VERBS (and all the irregular verbs fall in this category) Eg: vendre: to sell
1. -ER ENDING VERBS
REGULAR -ER ENDING VERBS
Eg: Parler (to speak), Habiter (to live), Jouer (to play), étudier (to play), chanter (to sing).
PARLER Stem (parl…..after cutting ER)
Je parl +e nous parl+ ons
tu parl+ es vous parl+ ez
il/elle parl +e ils/elles parl+ ent
STEM CHANGING -ER ENDING VERBS
GER ENDING VERBS : Eg : Manger (To eat), nager (to swim), nager (to swim)
Je mange, tu manges, il mange, nous mangeons, vous mangez, ils/elles mangent
Nager : Nous nageons
In nous form, the ending is eons instead of ons . Eg: Nous mangeons, nous nageons
CER ENDING VERBS: Eg: Commencer (to start), Placer (to place), remplacer (to replace)
Je commence, tu commences, il commence, nous commençons, vous commencez, ils commencent
In nous form, the c changes to ç., Eg: Nous commençons, nous plaçeons.
YER ENDING VERBS: Eg: envoyer : to send, nettoyer (to clean), employer : to employ, payer (to pay)
The y changes to i in the stem in all the forms except nous and vous.
Eg: Je paie, tu paies, il paie, nous payons, vous payez, ils paient
E CONSONANT ER ENDING VERBS : Promener (to walk), acheter (to buy), se lever (to get up), amener (to
bring people), emmener (to take people). In these verbs, the last e in the stem gets an accent grave except for
nous and vous form.
Stem : Promen
Je promène, tu promènes, il promène, nous promenons, vous promenez, ils promènent
Eg: J’achète, tu achètes, il achète, nous achetons, vous achetez, ils achètent
DOUBLING OF LAST CONSONANT: Eg: Appeler (to call), jeter (to throw), rappeler (to recall), épeler (to spell).
The last consonant in the stem gets doubled except for the nous and vous form.

2. -IR ENDING VERBS
Regular IR VERBS: Eg: Finir (to finish), choisir (to choose), remplir (to fill), obeir (obey), réfléchir (to think),
guérir (to become well, to recover)
CHOISIR: to choose Stem: Chois (after cutting IR)
Je chois + is Nous chois + issons
tu chois + is Vous chois + issez
il/elle chois + it Ils/elles chois + issent
IRREGULAR -IR VERBS
IR VERBS CONJUGATED LIKE ER VERBS: Eg: Ouvrir (to open), couvrir (to cover), découvrir (to discover), offrir
(to offer), souffrir (to suffer) J’ouvre, Tu ouvres, il ouvre, nous ouvrons, vous ouvrez, ils ouvrent
SORTIR (to go out)/PARTIR (to leave) /DORMIR (to sleep): Je sors, tu sors, il sort, nous sortons, vous sortez,
ils sortent
VERBS CONJUGATED LIKE VENIR (to come): Je viens, tu viens, il vient, nous venons, vous venez, ils viennent
Devenir (to become), revenir (to come back), souvenir (to remember)
MOURIR (To die): Je meurs, tu meurs, il meurt, nous mourons, vous mourez, ils meurent. This verb is mostly
used in past tense. The participle is MORT
3. -RE ENDING VERBS AND ALL IRREGULAR VERBS
REGULAR -RE ENDING VERBS: Eg: Vendre (to sell), Attendre (to wait), entendre (to hear), perdre (to lose),
descendre (to go down), répondre (to answer), dépendre (to depend), rendre (to return, to give back)
Eg: Rendre (to return) Stem: rend (after removing re)
Je rend + s Nous rend+ ons
tu rend + s Vous rend + ez
il rend + ___ Ils rend+ ent
VERBS CONJUGATED LIKE PRENDRE : Prendre (to take), apprendre (to learn), comprendre (to understand) .
Je prends, tu prends, il prend, nous prenons, vous prenez, ils prennent
IRREGULAR VERBS ENDING WITH -RE:
BOIRE (to drink): Je bois, tu bois, il boit, nous buvons, vous buvez, ils boivent
LIRE (To read): Je lis, tu lis, il lit, nous lisons, vous lisez, ils lisent
FAIRE (To do) : Je fais, tu fais, il fait, nous faisons, vous faites, ils font
ETRE (to be) : Je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont
ECRIRE (to write) : J’écris, tu écris, il écrit, nous écrivons, vous écrivez, ils écrivent
DIRE (to say, to tell): Je dis, tu dis, il dit, nous disons, vous dites, ils disent
METTRE (to put) : Je mets, tu mets, il/elle met, nous mettons, vous mettons, ils mettent
IRREGULAR VERBS ENDING WITH IR (Third category)
IR Verbs conjugated like ER ending verbs: ouvrir (to open), offrir (to offer), souffrir, découvrir
