Read the text below and answer the questions that follow. Use your own words as far as you
can. HOW I BECAME ADDICTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA
When I bought a Smartphone, I first signed up to an online blogging platform in 2014. I did this
because I was feeling depressed both physically and mentally due to the loss of my son in a car
accident. I needed a distraction; something that could help me forget all the bad memories I
was having at that time. After that, I created a Facebook account and downloaded WhatsApp
and Instagram. I gradually became an internet user. I joined many Facebook and WhatsApp
groups in which I could exchange and discuss life issues with other internet users. It was
fantastic!
Online, I was a different person. I was confident. I was someone who received attention and
people were actually curious about me. But, in real life, I was at home, on my own, isolated.
Even though some friends were paying me visits from time to time, their presence was
nothing, compared to the attention I received on Facebook and WhatsApp. That is how I
became addicted to social media. I became so obsessed with social media that I could not
spend a day without them. When I woke up in the morning, I logged into Facebook to see
notifications before anything else. I then answered WhatsApp messages before posting new
pictures and videos on Instagram. Social media turned me into someone who, though
insecure in real life, appeared very confident online. I became a “Facebook star” because of
my numerous posts in different groups. Many people actually liked what I posted and their
“likes” made me famous on Facebook.
Despite the fact that I was famous on social media, I still wondered why I was doing that. Why
should I keep on trying to be a person I was not to people I do not know and that I will probably
never meet? But I wanted to escape a life that I felt miserable.
Ultimately, social media made my life more miserable. Because of my addiction to Facebook
and WhatsApp, I lost many of my friends. Many people decided to avoid me because I spent all
my time on social media, posting what they called “nonsense”. I stopped being invited out.
People just got bored with me and being around me because my only focus was on my “online
family”.

Americans hold an election to choose their president each four years. It takes place early in
November and people who wish to stand for election as president sometimes start campaigning as
much as two years in advance. Their first step is to say that they wish to stand for president. The
second step for each candidate is to set up an organisation to run his campaign. The job of this
organisation is to make the candidate and his policies well-known and to raise money. It costs a lot
to pay staff, to make radio and television broadcasts, to print and send out literature and to pay
travel
and hotel bills.
There are two parties in America: the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. Most people who
want to stand for president aim to be chosen as either the Republican candidate or the Democratic
candidate. But it is also possible to stand as an independent that is as a candidate who does not
support a party. There may be several people hoping to be chosen as the candidate for each party.
But before anyone is chosen, each candidate must win as many supporters as possible in the various
states. So candidates travel a lot, speak at meetings and talk to voters. At different times primary
elections are held at state level or there are special meetings of local officials. The purpose of these
primaries and meetings is to choose special representatives called delegates who will later vote for
particular candidates. The more popular a candidate is, the more delegates are chosen to vote for
him. So, to summarise the third step, the object is to win as many delegates as possible in the primary
The fourth step takes place in about July or August of an election year. It is this: each party chooses
its candidates at a big party meeting called a convention, a noisy, colourful and cheerful occasion
that lasts a week. During this week, the delegates cast their votes for the candidate they represent.
After the two conventions, there will be one Republican candidate and one Democratic candidate.
The next step is the election campaign itself. During it, the two candidates try to persuade American
people to vote for them. They use television a lot and sometimes hold public debates on the main
issues. Meanwhile, the public opinion polls play their part. Through them each candidate learns if
he is gaining or losing support from various groups of people. This information enables him to alter
his campaigning methods if necessary.
Then comes the election itself. It is organised on a state basis. The voters cast their votes and
the candidate who wins most votes in the state wins the support of people called “electoral college”.
Each elector has to vote for the candidate who won most votes in his state. The candidates for whom
most electors vote become president.

child. Not even all of them, no matter their cost. But you did not buy the child and yet you love him
so much more. The love a man has for his property is quite different from the love he has for his
children. Quite different. The child is part of himself, and his property, no matter it worth, is just
property. But strange, very strange that God should treat human beings worse than man. I cannot
see
either Maria or her husband punishing Joseph or George, causing them to cry and pine for a whole
day, let alone a week and a month and a year and, worse, forever. Yet they say our soul is God’s or
part of God, for God breathed on the lifeless statue he moulded and it became man. So man is the
soil of the earth plus God’s breath. And yet, when the soul parts from the body and the earth
welcomes the body, God casts the soul into eternal flames! God!

Instagram. I gradually became an internet user. I joined many Facebook and WhatsApp groups in
which I could exchange and discuss life issues with other internet users. It was fantastic!
Online, I was a different person. I was confident. I was someone who received attention and people
were actually curious about me. But, in real life, I was at home, on my own, isolated. Even though
some friends were paying me visits from time to time, their presence was nothing, compared to the
attention I received on Facebook and WhatsApp. That is how I became addicted to social media. I
became so obsessed with social media that I could not spend a day without them. When I woke up in
the morning, I logged into Facebook to see notifications before anything else. I then answered
WhatsApp messages before posting new pictures and videos on Instagram. Social media turned me
into someone who, though insecure in real life, appeared very confident online. I became a “Facebook
star” because of my numerous posts in different groups. Many people actually liked what I posted and
their “likes” made me famous on Facebook.
Despite the fact that I was famous on social media, I still wondered why I was doing that. Why should
I
keep on trying to be a person I was not to people I do not know and that I will probably never meet?
But
I wanted to escape a life that I felt miserable.
Ultimately, social media made my life more miserable. Because of my addiction to Facebook and
WhatsApp, I lost many of my friends. Many people decided to avoid me because I spent all my time on
social media, posting what they called “nonsense”. I stopped being invited out. People just got bored
with me and being around me because my only focus was on my “online family”.

times primary elections are held at state level or there are special meetings of local officials.
The purpose of these primaries and meetings is to choose special representatives called
delegates who will later vote for particular candidates. The more popular a candidate is, the
more delegates are chosen to vote for him. So, to summarise the third step, the object is to
win as many delegates as possible in the primary elections and at party meetings.
The fourth step takes place in about July or August of an election year. It is this: each party
chooses its candidates at a big party meeting called a convention, a noisy, colourful and
cheerful occasion that lasts a week. During this week, the delegates cast their votes for the
candidate they represent. After the two conventions, there will be one Republican candidate
and one Democratic candidate.
The next step is the election campaign itself. During it, the two candidates try to persuade
American people to vote for them. They use television a lot and sometimes hold public
debates on the main issues. Meanwhile, the public opinion polls play their part. Through
them each candidate learns if he is gaining or losing support from various groups of people.
This information enables him to alter his campaigning methods if necessary.
Then comes the election itself. It is organised on a state basis. The voters cast their
votes and the candidate who wins most votes in the state wins the support of people called
“electoral college”. Each elector has to vote for the candidate who won most votes in his
state. The candidates for whom most electors vote become president.

Joseph has stopped crying but George was still crying. George was always like that. When he started
crying it took time to stop him. His mother had tried to make him stop but he would not. His father
now said, ‘George, don’t you hear our friend from Nkar saying he has come to see you? If a man
comes to see you do you entertain him with crying? Get us something to entertain him. Bring a
kolanut from the basket near my bed and give it to him.’ George now stopped crying, wiped away the
tears from his eyes and ran to bring the kolanut. The past was gone and forgotten. He was happy to
run the errand and did not regard his father any more as the man who had whipped him a moment
ago. His father thanked him when he brought the kolanut and he left delighted.
This incident, small as it was, made me reflect on what Brother Ngo taught us about love, crime and
forgiveness.
He taught that before you have children, you love nothing like you love them when they come. When
you have them, you are willing to sacrifice everything for their sake. If any of them does a wrong
thing, you punish him but you hate punishing the child and also hate what he has done and must
punish him for it. Sometimes, children
are very naughty. They may push down and break piles of records or a record player, a radio, plates
or glasses or cause some very considerable damage. This will make you furious and you may punish
them severely, but none of those things is worth the child. Not even all of them, no matter their cost.
But you did not buy the child and yet you love him so much more. The love a man has for his
property is quite different from the love he has for
his children. Quite different. The child is part of himself, and his property, no matter it worth, is just
property.
But strange, very strange that God should treat human beings worse than man. I cannot see either
Maria or her husband punishing Joseph or George, causing them to cry and pine for a whole day, let
alone a week and a month and a year and, worse, forever. Yet they say our soul is God’s or part of
God, for God breathed on the lifeless statue he moulded and it became man. So man is the soil of the
earth plus God’s breath. And yet, when the soul parts
from the body and the earth welcomes the body, God casts the soul into eternal flames!
God! (Culled from The White Man of God, KenjoJumbam, African writer’s series )

Americans hold an election to choose their president each four years. It takes place early in
November and people who wish to stand for election as president sometimes start campaigning as
much as two years in advance. Their first step is to say that they wish to stand for president.
The second step for each candidate is to set up an organisation to run his campaign. The job of this
organisation is to make the candidate and his policies well-known and to raise money. It costs a lot to
pay staff, to make radio and television broadcasts, to print and send out
literature and to pay travel and hotel bills. There are two parties in America : the Republican Party
and the Democratic Party. Most people who want to stand for president aim to be chosen as either
the Republican candidate or the Democratic candidate. But it is also possible to stand as an
independent that is as a candidate who does not support a party. There may be several people
hoping to be chosen as the candidate for each party.
But before anyone is chosen, each candidate must win as many supporters as possible in the various
states. So candidates travel a lot, speak at meetings and talk to voters. At different times primary
elections are held at state level or there are special meetings of local officials. The purpose of these
primaries and meetings is to choose special representatives called delegates who will later vote for

stopped crying, wiped away the tears from his eyes and ran to bring the kolanut. The past
was gone and forgotten. He was happy to run the errand and did not regard his father any
more as the man who had whipped him a moment ago. His father thanked him when he
brought the kolanut and he left delighted.
This incident, small as it was, made me reflect on what Brother Ngo taught us about love,
crime and forgiveness. He taught that before you have children, you love nothing like you
love them when they come. When you have them, you are willing to sacrifice everything
for their sake. If any of them does a wrong thing, you punish him but you hate punishing
the child and also hate what he has done and must punish him for it. Sometimes, children
are very naughty. They may push down and break piles of records or a record player, a
radio, plates or glasses or cause some very considerable damage. This will make you furious
and you may punish them severely, but none of those things is worth the child. Not even
all of them, no matter their cost. But you did not buy the child and yet you love him so
much more. The love a man has for his property is quite different from the love he has for
his children. Quite different. The child is part of himself, and his property, no matter it
worth, is just property.
But strange, very strange that God should treat human beings worse than man. I cannot see
either Maria or her husband punishing Joseph or George, causing them to cry and pine for
a whole day, let alone a week and a month and a year and, worse, forever. Yet they say our
soul is God’s or part of God, for God breathed on the lifeless statue he moulded and it
became man. So man is the soil of the earth plus God’s breath. And yet, when the soul parts
from the body and the earth welcomes the body, God casts the soul into eternal flames!
God!

There are two parties in America: the Republican Party and the Democratic

SECTION C READING COMPREHENSION 10 MARKS
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions below it
Lost in a foreign land
About 1,000 people of Africa descent live in the state of Gujarat in Western India. They are
known as Sidis. Not do they only live in great poverty, but they have suffered from the fate of
having forgotten their past. Most Sidis do not know where their ancestors come from, nor do
they know any African language. In the Gujarati village of Jumbur on the Western end of India,
any visitor will find this unusual village. The Sidis live in mud houses and many of their
children have skin infections or eye diseases; the place where they live is full of smell of
poverty.
In the village fish markets, women speak in Gujurati. The children play cricket and shout in
Gujarati on the lawns while the old men pass the whole time of the day, squatting by the tea
stall in the square next to the mosque, conversing in Gujurati. The Sidis are different because
of their looks; their hair as well as their facial features are different from that of the other
Indians.
Jambur is one of the two Gujurati villages of the head that it would have been better if the
migration from Africa had never happened.
“Look at our miserable homes”, he says, sitting on the doorstep of his own ramshackle
house. “We go hungry here. We are very unhappy. We don’t have proper shelter and we have
so many other problems”.
It seems that the Sidis came to Gujurat not in one migration, , but by bit by bit, perhaps from
different parts of Africa. That may explain why they look so different from other Indians. Their
ancestors were probably brought to India as slaves or bodyguards. “Our forebears came from
Africa, but we don’t exactly know which country”, confesses an old patriarch. “Our ancestors
knew. But we were born here. We have no record populated exclusively by the Sidis. The
village headman, Faqir Mohammed, confides with a sad shake of our African past”. That is
definitely true. The dances they perform are like African dances, with their painted faces,
colourful costumes and exuberant drum beat. The Sidis live in a dilemma. They have lost their
African identity, but they are not accepted by the other Gujaratis as fully Indian.

called in an expert in African religions, Richard Hoskins of King’s college in London. Hoskins
confirmed that the nature of the killing pointed to a ritual killing which was common in southern
Africa and among the Koruba in Ghana, Benin and Nigeria. Hoskins was sure that the dumping
of the body in the river and the orange colour of the shorts were ritually significant. Oshun, the
Koruba river goddess, is said to be associated with orange colour. The forensic team had also
discovered tiny clay pulled with specks of gold and ground bones in Adam’s small intestines.
Hoskins confirmed that the concoction in Adam’s stomach was typical of those used for
preparing ritual killings in sub-Saharan Africa.

Who could say this but Amadou Lamine Sall- Senegal’s and probably Francophone Africa’s
most talented living poet? Indeed, Sall acquired from his spiritual mentor and close friend- the
late Senegalese President and celebrated poet, Léopold Sédar Senghor- not only the love of
poetry, but also the delicate art of it. In one of his volumes, Kamandalu, Sall proudly claims his
quest for intellectual ascent through the only path he has made available to himself.
My hunger,
My great hunger is,
Will always be called poetry.
Sall is the jealous custodian of the creative and rhythmic temple where Senghor once
majestically and lyrically preached- and reigned. And when Senghor died in 2001, Sall, whose
literary career always seems to reflect a permanent and still unfinished conversation with the
former Senegalese President, hailed his hero in a little masterpiece, Sédar’s celestial wedding:
In the same poem, Sall acknowledges the huge poetic and political legacy of the late President
to the whole nation:
This poetic dialogue between Sall, one of the few African poets to have been awarded the
prestigious Grand prix de l’Académie Française in 1991, and Senghor sums it all up: even after
his death, Senghor remains the reference point for poets in Senegal and Francophone Africa as
a whole.
But what is next? Will the ever- celebrated Alexandrines survive Senghor and his spiritual son?
Will Dakar remain the head from which every poetic beat will have to sound to be heard? What
about other Francophone African countries? Are their lands as fertile as the Senegalese soil
when it comes to giving birth to literary geniuses?
Congo-Brazzaville once came close to Senegal, producing the likes of Soni Labu Tansi and
Thcicaya U’Tamsi- an old generation of writers who took their country to envied heights. It is
also the country of the other Grand prix de l’ Académie Française laureate- Jean Baptiste Tati-
Loutard, who is now a government Minister and the president of the country’s writers’
association. Congo- Brazzaville and Senegal share a common political heritage, which probably
contributed to their achievements in the world of poetry. Before independence in the ‘60s, they
were the capitals for the two French colonial empires on the continent- French Equatorial Africa
and French West Africa.
