Fils d’un adjudant-chef nommé
Leonard Castella Archer
et d’une certaine Hilda Hulett
couturière de la haute couture.
Il a voulu être un peintre.
Il était doué pour les sciences.
Momentum
1950 Il devient membre de la IED après avoir eu le diplôme national en
ingénierie mécanique.
1951 il reçoit le prix national de la meilleur thèse en design.
1953 Il quitte son poste chez un industriel pour ouvrir son propre bureau de
consulting - il donne des cours de soir à “Central school of Art and Design”.
1957 Il continue avec l’enseignement à pleine temps cette fois ci.
1961 il enseigne comme un professeur invité à l’école d’Ulm jusqu’a 1962 (il a
été approcher par Toma Maldonado)
1962 Il commencer à diriger l’unité de recherche composée d’une équipe
pluridisciplinaire au “Royal College of Art”.
1967 Le “Royal College of Art” cède les droits à l’unité de recherche de Misha
Black pour constituer le premier département de recherche en design.

Il a été critiquer par John Chris Jones and Christopher Alexander
deux théoriciens qui ne pronent pas l’approche systèmatique.
Chris Jones a dit:
“Rationality, originally seen as the means to open up the intuition to aspects of life
outside the designer's experience, became, almost overnight, a toolkit of rigid
methods that obliged designers and planners to act like machines, deaf to every
human cry and incapable of laughter”.
Archer lui mème a dit:
“wasted a lot of time trying to bend the methods of operational research and
management techniques to design purposes”
