The answers given in this markscheme contain the essential information that candidates are expected to
provide in order to gain full marks for each question.
Where appropriate, the information may be expressed in phrases other than those indicated, but full
marks may only be awarded if all the necessary information is given.
Incomplete answers should be marked as directed.
Do not use half marks.
Unless otherwise indicated no marks are to be awarded or deducted for use of language: linguistic errors
should only be taken into account if communication is severely impaired and the answer is
incomprehensible to a normal speaker of the language.
Assistant Examiners are requested to wait until they are contacted by their team leader before
beginning the marking (see the examiners instructions for further details).
examinadores).

TEXT D — WEB ADDICTS BEWARE!
Communicative Purpose: Controversial argument – communicate to students through a set of
guidelines.
A. Cultural interaction:
The aim is to write a set of guidelines for the student body to educate them on the appropriate
use of the Internet. The guidelines will be published in the school newspaper, and may be in
the form of an article or an essay.
Register and style:
The register should be in the range of informal to semi-formal. Candidates are expected to
include a short introduction. The guidelines could be in point form or candidates may use
discourse markers. The audience should be directly addressed.
Language accuracy is not formally assessed here and should be considered only where
mistakes obscure meaning.
B. Message:
The guidelines should focus on the negative aspects of excessive use of the Internet with an
appropriate cautionary tone. The candidate’s feelings about the negative aspects of Internet
over usage should be clearly conveyed.
The descriptors regarding copying from the text should be carefully adhered to. Verbatim
copying of short sections of the text does NOT constitute “undue copying”; the copying of
any section (whether it be long or short) without using it appropriately and incorporating it
sensibly into the response is what constitutes undue copying.
Irrelevant details which are selected should be considered under Criterion B and penalized
appropriately. Similarly, details not found in the text should NOT be included.
The candidate should include some of the following details from the text:
A. Spending too much time online may leave you depressed. / Internet addicts had a
depression score five times that of non-addicts.
B. One could get hooked or become addicted.
C. Young people are most at risk of becoming addicts. / The average age of addicts is 21.
D. You are warned of the dangers of social networking sites if they replaced
conventional interaction.
E. If people are addicted, it can affect a person’s ability to perform at work.
F. If people are addicted, they may be failing to do chores so they can go online.
G. Some people find it hard to control how much time they spend online, to the point
where it interferes with their daily life.
H. If you think about the Internet when you’re doing something else – that’s problematic. / If
you can’t stop doing it – that’s problematic.
–7– M12/2/ABENG/HP1/ENG/TZ0/XX/M
