RENAULT V.I. CLASSES OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES STANDARD
FOR SIMPLE PARTS 02.10.4004 / F P. 1/13
OBJECT
The present standard defines the property classes of steels which allow the manufacturer to use
different grades for the production of the parts concerned, without the need for information on the
drawings of these parts to be modified.
These grades make reference to AFNOR standards, except for high strength hot or cold rolled steels
that are defined in RENAULT V.I. standard N° 02.10.4007.
This facilitates standardization of the parts and their procurement.

1. FIELD OF APPLICATION This standard is valid when there is a reference to it.
”Not for new design” is only an indication to our design departments.
This standard applies to parts of simple form whose use does not require an exclusive grade of steel. Parts
excluded are those which have been allocated “a certain criticality level” by the Design Office and parts
whose material has already been defined by a specific document. This standard should not be used for
nitrocarbided parts (standard N° 02.60.4004) or surface hardened parts (standard N° 02.60.4003). As the
boundaries for the field of application are difficult to define, the Design Office is advised to refer to the
RENAULT V.I. Materials Department to state their choices, especially for classes from 700 onwards. For
parts made from mild sheet steel for pressing or cold bending, refer to standard N° 02.30.4001.
Welding
Class 340 grades are weldable without need for special precautions using conventional facilities. The
other classes should not be used for welded parts. If a welded part demands mechanical properties
superior to those of class 340, one or several grades shall be specified after consultation with the
Materials Department without making reference to the present standard.
Brazing and bronze welding
Class 340 to 700 grades inclusive can be brazed or bronze welded.
2. GENERALITIES
2.1 Choice of grade
Classes define the mechanical properties to be obtained, extended where necessary by essential
requirements as regards chemical composition, heat treatment, weldability, etc...
After the class has been chosen by the Design Office and indicated in the drawing, the manufacturer of
the part concerned must, when requesting Production Approval, specify the grade retained and its
condition (case of drawn or work-hardened steel), taken exclusively from the tables in section 3.
In the absence of special details regarding quality, condition, hardenability..., all the possibilities
of the reference standard (NF...) are permitted.
Acceptable machining is obtained with a sulphur content ≥ 0.020%. The user (RENAULT V.I.
Machining Plant or sub-contractor) may, under his own responsibility, permit a sulphur content lower
than this 0.020% minimum.
The grades stipulated in the reference standards quoted may have mechanical properties staggered by
plus or by minus in relation to the properties of the class demanded. The supplier must then assure
observance on the part of the compulsory properties of the class designated in the drawing,
according to the size of the part, his facilities or those of his sub-contractor(s).

2.2 Change of grade This standard is valid when there is a reference to it.
”Not for new design” is only an indication to our design departments.
During the service life of a part, it is highly probable that the steel grade used for its manufacture is
different from the steel grade employed at the time of Production Approval.
The supplier must :
- exclusively choose a grade from among those indicated in the tables in section 3 in the class under
consideration.
- specify in the inspection reports handed over the designation of the steel with the reference
standard (NF...) and inform the Technical Acceptance section receiving the parts.

3.1 CLASS 340
Field of application
Mild steel parts usually to be welded. This class is sometimes chosen for its aptitude to cold forming
(e.g. crimping, flaring...) or for the guarantee of mechanical properties superior to those of “mild sheet
steel” defined in standard N° 02.30.4001.
Examples : clamps, welded linkage parts, welded bosses or couplings, welded bearing brackets,
lubricating sleeves fastened by flaring...
For other applications, rather use class 380.

4. CROSS-REFERENCES This standard is valid when there is a reference to it.
”Not for new design” is only an indication to our design departments.
CROSS-REFERENCE N° 1 : Forgings (class 340 - 380 - 580)
Annealing is not laid down. The structure is ferritic-perlitic with a ferritic grain size G ≥ 3 according to
standard NF A 04.102.
CROSS-REFERENCE N° 2 : Forgings (class 700)
Annealing is laid down.
CROSS-REFERENCE N° 3 : Improved machinability series
Certain standards define “improved machinability series” by addition of sulphur, lead, etc...
These series are allowed for classes :
380
580
700
780
Carburized or carbonitrided steel.
For class 980, they are allowed if they are indicated in the drawing. (See example in § 5).
CROSS-REFERENCE N° 4 : Choice of process for class 780
If no particular details are mentioned in the drawing, both technical solutions (hardening and tempering;
hot or cold drawing) are allowed.
If the Design Office demands the hardening and tempering solution only, it should be indicated in the
drawing.

5. INDICATIONS TO BE MADE IN THE DRAWINGS
Indicate : Steel + symbol of class retained + reference number of the present standard + special
specification (class 780 & 980).
The special specifications of this standard are :
- Hardening and tempering (for class 780, cross-reference N° 4).
- Absence of zonal decarburization indicated by ------ (for classes 780 & 980).
- Improved machinability series allowed (for class 980, cross-reference N° 3).
Examples : . Steel class 580 - standard N° 02.10.4004.
. Carburized or carbonitrided steel - standard N° 02.10.4004
. Steel class 780 (hardened and tempered) - standard N° 02.10.4004
. Steel class 780 - standard N° 02.10.4004
Absence of decarburization in area (.....).
. For class 980 steel parts without specification of decarburization and machinability
Steel class 980 - standard N° 02.10.4004
