ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)*
When braking sharply, the two essential aims
are to reduce the stopping distance and keep
‘your vehicle under control. However, theres 2
Fisk that road holding and directional control
tmay be lost and the wheels may lock when
braking, depending on the nature ofthe ground,
weather conditions and your reactions. The
antilock braking system (ABS) has been
Gesigned to combat this danger.
The safety enhancement is that the brake
control system. prevents the wheels from
locking, even if the brakes are applied too
sharply, and allows the vehicle to be steered
and this its direction to be controlled. Under
these circumstances iis quit possible for the
river to staer the vehicle and to avoid an
cbstacle whilse atthe sime time applying the
brakes. Also this systemallows you to optimise
topping distance: when the adhesion of ane or
more wheels becomes hazardous (wet roads,
tlppery or varying read surfaces). Under bad
Foadholding conditions (snow, black ie) leting
the clutch out improves your steering ability.
Athough this system allows you to. make
maximum use of stopping dltances, even with
the ABS you sil have to take account of the
ctual condition of the road surface. fis stl
