June 2006 Tab of the Month from www.AccentOnMusic.com
"Shenandoah" is a new arrangement, this one in Open-G tuning. It was instigated by an alternate tunings article that I
wrote for Guitar World Acoustic magazine. To produce Open-G from standard tuning, lower the first, fifth and sixth strings one
whole-step. I have played and sung this tune since the early 70s, initially in my California folk duo Waterwheel. My partner and I
did some interesting things with the meter at the end of the verse. In this arrangement, I have gone beyond the added 3/4 measures
that Waterwheel used, by adding flourishes that translate to consecutive measures of 5/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 3/4. It returns to 4/4 time on
the repeat. Be free with the flourishes - there is no need to play them in strict tempo. In fact, they are more satisfying emotionally if
the tempo ebbs and flows a bit. Take your time with this tune. It doesnt need to be fast. - Mark Hanson
