How do I request PDH for outside professional development?

Full-time faculty can request up to two (2) hours professional development for outside/non-COD events. Starting April, 2024, faculty should use the Professional Development and Renewal Fund Request to get prior approval from their deans. After the event, complete the online Outside Professional Development form and upload the prior approval. PD hours for outside experiences will be added to Cornerstone transcripts after the end of each month.

REGISTERING FOR PD

Where do I find upcoming PD offerings?

The most comprehensive list of upcoming professional development opportunities can be found in the Cornerstone Events Calendar. From inside.cod.edu, select Cornerstone from Work Tools and click on Events Calendar. To narrow the results, use Subject Filters such as “Faculty Development” or “Faculty FT – PDH Score Eligible

What is Cornerstone and how do I use it?

Cornerstone is COD’s training management system for professional development. In addition to faculty development opportunities, you can also find employee development events such as Program Information sessions, Health and Wellness seminars, and employee training like UndocuALLY and Safe Zone. Cornerstone also houses college compliance training.

Cornerstone is managed on campus by the EDC. You can learn more about how to use Cornerstone in this training guide [PDF].

How do I sign up for professional development sessions?

  1. Log into Inside.cod.edu
  2. Click Work Tools > Cornerstone
  3. Click Learning > Events Calendar
  4. Click the title of the event
  5. On the training details screen, click View Event
  6. Once the screen refreshes, you’ll see the session information, how many openings are available. If there are openings available, click the Request button.

Do I have to register? Can I just show up?

In order to ensure that PD hours are awarded when available, we highly recommend registering for sessions in Cornerstone.

That being said, it is possible to attend many PD sessions without registering in advance. If the virtual meeting room URL for a one-shot, synchronous online session (webinars, presentations, brown bags, etc.) has been made available, the session is generally considered to be open to drop-ins. Please use your full name in the online session so the facilitator can accurately update their attendance roster.

Professional development courses using Blackboard do require registration through Cornerstone so that participants can be enrolled in the Blackboard course. Other events may require registration to ensure that attendance is limited to a specific number.

FACILITATING PD

How do I propose a faculty development workshop or course?

FPD is always looking for new courses and workshops that are interactive and collaborative, share practical, evidence-based best practices on pedagogical themes, and encourage participants to try new things in the classroom.

To submit a proposal for a PD event (workshop, webinar, discussion, etc.) please complete this online form.

To submit a proposal for a PD course, please visit the Teaching Commons for information about the review and submission process. Contact the Faculty Chair of Professional Development at [email protected] with any questions.

What resources are available for facilitators?

Both the FPD and EDC are available to work with facilitators to develop and plan workshops, courses, and other PD opportunities.

You may also wish to take a look at the following guides:

Full-time faculty receive PDH for designing and facilitating faculty development workshops. Stipends are available for faculty who design and deliver FPD courses.

Why isn’t the session I attended showing up on my transcript?

Chances are, the session attendance has not been recorded yet! We recommend waiting a week after the session to check on your transcript as rosters are not always forwarded along immediately, and all attendance is recorded manually by the good folks in the EDC. We ask that you please be patient and bear with us!

If after a week, you do not see your attendance reflected in Cornerstone, please follow up with the facilitator of the session in question.

PD HOURS

What is the PD Hour Requirement?

The PD Hour Requirement is a contractual requirement for tenured, full-time faculty (with the exception of Library faculty) which states:

Faculty members will be required to complete six (6) clock hours of Professional Development courses offered by the College per academic year (from Fall in-service through graduation), exclusive of Professional Development funds per Section J3 of the contract. Up to two (2) hours of Professional Development offered outside the College may be pre-approved in the discretion of the Dean to count towards the annual Professional Development requirement and may use J3 funds. Summer Professional Development Hours will be applied to the following academic year’s requirements. This Professional Development requirement will not apply to tenure track faculty. Faculty who create and deliver professional development courses can use these hours to fulfill the six (6) clock hours requirement. (D 6.1 and D 6.2)

How do I know if something counts toward PD hours?

All PD hour generating events are designated in Cornerstone with the notation of [PDH] in the description.

You can also filter events and view only those that provide PD hours:

  • Cornerstone > Events Calendar
  • In the left-hand column, click Add Subject Filters
  • In the pop-up box click the square-plus button [ ⊞ ] to expand the menu
  • Click the plus sign [ ➕ ] next to Faculty Professional Development Hour Score Eligible (Full-Time Faculty)
  • Click Done to view the limited results on the Calendar.

Events providing PD hours have been determined to meet the following criteria:

  • are interactive and collaborative;
  • share practical, evidence-based best practices on pedagogical themes;
  • encourage participants to try new things in the classroom.

How are PD hours calculated?

PD hours are equivalent to attendance or participation hours. A 90-minute workshop provides 1.5 PD hours; a reading seminar with 5 participation hours provides 5 PD hours.

PD hours are represented in your Cornerstone transcript as a PD Hour Score and displays your PD hours as minutes (e.g., 1.5 hours of PD = a PD Hour Score of 90).

When do hours need to be completed?

PD hours should be completed during the academic year, beginning with Fall Kickoff and ending with Commencement. Any PD hours accrued during the summer will be applied to the following academic year’s requirement.

Where can I find my PD hour total?

Accrued PD hours will appear on your Cornerstone Transcript – you must either run a transcript report or view a printable version of your transcript to see the PD hours.

Can I carry over hours?

No – any hours over 6 that you accrue over the course of an academic year cannot be carried over to the next unless you have another arrangement with your dean.

Please note the PD hour scores are applied to the academic year within which the learning opportunity ends.

Can I count outside conferences or webinars toward required PD hours?

Yes, up to two (2) hours of external professional development can be used to count towards the annual PD hour requirement. In order to use external professional development experiences for PD hours, faculty must get prior approve from their deans and complete the Outside Professional Development form. PD hours for external experiences will be added to Cornerstone transcripts after the end of each month.

Per the contract, full-time faculty can use PD funds for these external PD hours.
