Apple today launched Apple Music Classical for Android on the Google Play Store, expanding the app beyond the iPhone for the first time (via 9to5Mac).

Much like Apple Music for Android, the Apple Music Classical app for Android largely mirrors the design of its iOS counterpart. Notably, the Apple Music Classical app for Android comes before Apple has made the app available for the iPad or Mac.

In 2021, Apple announced that it had purchased the classical music streaming service Primephonic and would be folding it into Apple Music via a new app dedicated to the genre. Apple launched Apple Music Classical in March, offering a standalone experience for discovering and listening to classical music.

The Apple Music Classical app offers Apple Music subscribers access to over five million classical music tracks, including new high-quality releases, in addition to hundreds of curated playlists, thousands of exclusive albums, and other features like composer bios and deep dives on key works.

The app offers a simpler interface for interacting with classical music specifically. Unlike the existing Apple Music app, Apple Music Classical allows users to search by composer, work, conductor, catalog number, and more. Users can get more detailed information from editorial notes and descriptions.

Apple commissioned high-resolution digital portraits of famous composers like Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin, and Johann Sebastian Bach for the app, using color palettes and artistic references from the relevant classical period, with more unique artwork to be added over time. Apple works with classical music artists and institutions to offer exclusive content and recordings.

The Apple Music Classical app for Android is available now on the Google Play Store. Users must have an Apple Music or Apple One subscription to use the app.

I am still waiting for the Apple TV Android app. Lots of purchases from iTunes I would love to be able to watch on other devices... you can do it, Apple! Maybe Apple should hold a bake sale to fund the development!

Apple really do move in mysterious ways…

Why Android before an iPad or Mac app?

I re-subscribed to Apple Music solely to enjoy Apple Music Classical… but as I use my Mac far more often for music listening, without a Mac app I'll probably let my subscription go.

No mystery: far more Android users than iPad or Mac users. Apple pursues MONEY before niche opportunities... even its own.

Why iTunes on Windows way back in the day? Same. And that opened iPod up to the gigantic PC world, which exploded iPod, which created the revenue wave that led to things like iPhone, etc.

All seemingly odd decisions and/or even anti-consumer scenarios are about the money.

I wonder if the reason they’re so reluctant to bring it to iPad and Mac is because the next versions of their operating systems will have a totally rewritten universal music app, and they don’t want to spoil anything about it yet.
I sure hope so because the current iPad music app is extremely limited, and while the Mac one is more capable, it’s a lot more buggy as well.

Apple users are (sniff) far more cultured and have other ways to listen to classical music.
They do this as a way to reach out to the heathens. :p

I don't want to get my hopes up...but that would be amazing. The macOS Music app is in desperate need of an overhaul.

As long as the Android app isn't optimised for tablets it's not that weird I think. I agree that there should be an iPad and macOS app though. Probably they're working on that.

Now do the same for other genres of music - e.g. electronic music with long sets and multiple remixes - or fix the music app. The UI is still a hot mess and search only works when you don't make spelling mistakes and still often delivers sub-par results compared to Spotify.

Spotify also has a bad UI, quality is not as good as apple music and they supposedly pay artists less - but search, probably the core festure of a misic streaming app - works much better.
