Dp lt randomly fails with kernel panic

Hallo,

I have a jetson xavier nx connected to an edp display. Most of the time this display works as expected, but sometimes during boot the dp lt fails (about 1 in 30 boots).
On a failed boot the kernel panic with the following message:

I use the Jetpack 5.1.5 (L4T 35.6.1, Kernel 5.10).

Do you have any suggestions thow o debug this error, or is it possible to set the dp lt parameters in the devicetree?

Are you talking about the hang happened in do_fast_lt_no_handshake?

No not directly.

do_fast_lt_no_handshake() triggers a BUG_ON statement because lt_config_valid = false, (this can be seen in the log [ 5.823110]). During the non failing boots the lt_config_validstays true.

The call of tegra_dc_sor_detach causes lt_config_valid to become false, I don’t know why this happens, I don’t see anything that indicated that this function fails.

It also seems to be connected to the ce_retry count. In the last tests I ran ce_retry was always 0 when the boot succeed and > 0 when it failed.

After some further tests it seems as if the tegradc driver processes an event while the dp_lt is alread in the fast_lt_state function:

I added some additional debug messages and this dropped the frequency of the error further down, therefor it took some time until I could recreate the error-state. However I now suspect, that a timing issue between the edid ready signal and the link training is the root cause:

In the failing case, the tegra_dp_hpd_op_edid_ready function is called after the lt_passed function and therefor lt_config_valid is false during the fast lt phase.

The whole display port initialization also occurs at least 1s earlier in the boot sequence when it fails, compared to the working boot attempts.

I have “fixed” the problem for my use case.
In my case the kernel panic occurred when the another PCIE driver was not initialized.
The the error case the dp lt was also executed about 6s earlier in the kernel boot procedure compared to the working case, I dont know if this caused the kernel panic.

I still think its a Bug that the dp lt causes a kernel panic if another unrelated PCIE driver is not initialized, maybe due to the different boot timings with and without the initialization of the PCIE driver.
