  • The Linux version of AD is called OpenLDAP, and they interoperate quite well. Like YP (Yellow Pages) it will provide you with single sign-on and authentication across your network.
  • Install OpenLDAP. That is an AD compatible directory manager. Here is a link to their web site: http://www.openldap.org/
  • Yeah. I think the Linux version is free, at least for now. Advanced beta I think.
  • Assuming you want to pay for a 64-bit Windows system (Win7 recommended for that), you can run it in a Linux virtual machine easily enough. For those who have to use Photoshop CS6, that may be your only option, aside from a dual-boot system (yech). I run 64-bit Win7 in a Linux VirtualBox VM (64-bit RHEL 6.x) with no…
  • That package has a lot of stuff that other components of the operating system required for most normal use, so it is listed as a dependency in those other packages. As a result, when you removed util-linux, you removed all the dependent stuff as well, resulting in ... well, now you know. This is why yum, as a default, will…
  • 1. See if HP has some Linux sane drivers on their web site for this. 2. Go to #1. 3. See if generic sane drivers on your distribution work.
  • My company is seriously looking at Amazon's cloud for additional resources for our cell phone proxy browsers (though who knows what impact the recent power failures due to the storms on the US east coast will have on this effort will be). My opinion (as principal/senior performance engineer for the company) is that we…
  • @goingeasy I used to write risk analysis software for the options trading industry in Chicago. To trade stocks/options effectively, you really need dual HD displays (or more), plus a REALLY big pipe... :-)
  • I'll send her a message now. No promises. I'll probably be able to tell you something tomorrow.
  • Unfortunately, Photoshop hasn't worked well under Wine since version 7 (pre-CS5). I still keep that version on my system, but to tell the truth I usually run such applications in a Windows virtual machine running under Linux. If you want to run CS6 (or 5 for that matter), then you will have to pay the Microsoft tax... :-(…
  • My system is somewhat dated now - it's 4.5 years old, but it still kicks butt! Intel S5000XVN server/workstation motherboard 2x 3GHz E5450 Penryn CPUs 8GB RAM 320GB hot-swap Sata-2 system drive 4x500GB Sata-2 data drives (internal) 2x CD/DVD recorders 3 external eSata-2 RAID arrays - 2 in RAID-5 format, and 1 in JBOD…
  • Contact RogueWave? I was a RW OEM for years in the 90's and 00's - their engineering tech support people were always very helpful. If this is not a legitimately licensed copy, then you are SOL - pay the price and get the support!
  • The kernel has little to do with SELinux. That is an add-on service that is started after the kernel is booted. What exactly are you trying to accomplish, aside from trying to recruit someone whose expertise you are clueless about?
  • You say this is a secure drive, so I assume it is encrypted. If so, that is likely the cause of the slowness of the data transfer. Encryption (especially with modern strong encryption routines) can be quite slow, especially when it has to be done in software. My work laptop uses full-disc encryption, which is noticeably…
  • I have a number of Windows programs that I run with Wine on my RHEL 6.2 system, but I also have a couple that will only run in Windows proper, so for those I run them in a Windows XP virtual machine (VirtualBox). It works just great for that. Some of the applications I run that way include my Fidelity stock/option trading…
  • Which depends upon what you are doing. All Linux server editions will serve for web, mail, directory, dns, firewall, and other services. Which you choose depends a lot on other factors such as versions of software that you need to run, who is going to maintain it, how many users will be on the system. We use RHEL for our…

  • It may be that some service or driver can't start, but it obviously is not one that you are dependent upon. You can look at the system messages in /var/log/messages* for indicators of what went wrong. It may be that you can just disable some service, or remove an unneeded driver to stop the "nagging".
  • I doubt very much if CS6 (the latest and "greatest") works with Wine in Linux. CS5 has plenty of problems, and Adobe doesn't seem too interested in making it compatible with Linux systems. My advice? Run Windows in a Linux virtual machine, and then run CS6 there.
  • Unfortunately, java installations can be pretty counter-intuitive. If you do this, "ls -l /usr/bin/java" you will find that it points to somewhere else, such as /etc/alternatives, or /usr/java/... - where depends upon the operating system and version. When you install a new Java version, it doesn't necessarily get linked…

  • What is the make + model + any other info about this system you can provide?
  • Reasons why I (and my company) don't buy HP gear... :-( So, what has Google shown you? Anyway, post the full make + model + options (motherboard + CPU) and anything else you can think of, and we will see what we can find. In any case, I agree that a bios upgrade should be free.
  • Burn and run some live distributions and see what you like best. If you can boot off of the USB drive, you can use Unetbootin to install a number of Linux live cd/dvd iso images on a thumb drive and boot/install from that if you don't want to, or can't, burn a bunch of CDs and/or DVDs. Here is a link to Unetbootin:…
  • See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Util-linux The util-linux-ng package is a standard package, installed by default on RHEL 6.x and clones. Your server indicates that. Don't bother, unless there is something that you really need from the one you are proposing to install.
  • One other thing - I also run a variety of emulators for other CPU families (ARM, MIPS, etc) on these systems as well. I need to emulate an entire raft of mobile phone systems, which I do. All of this is done in virtual machines or emulated machines (different CPU types).
  • Usually Linux loads a lot faster than Windoze; however, the latest versions of Ubuntu are starting to get really bloated. Myself, in order to learn about and get comfortable with new operating systems, I don't dual boot them. Rather, I will install a virtual machine manager such as VirtualBox (free) and run the new…
  • AHarris's last comment was not far off the mark. If you think you may have been infected with a virus, what I do for my consulting clients in such a case is extract the drive from their system, plug it into a dock on my Linux system, and scan it with 3 different A/V scanners (there a a bunch for Linux systems that will…
  • Boot with a recovery CD/DVD disc. Mount the root file system. Edit the file /etc/inittab in the mounted file system and change the runlevel to 3. Then reboot from disc. That will boot you into text mode so you can login as root and fix the GUI and other cruft.
  • No problem. Sometimes, these sort of things just need to be exposed to the light to correct themselves... :-)
  • Well the lpi (lines / inch) seems correct. Word-wrap is on, so I am wondering if it may be possible that there are fill characters at the end of the lines that may be forcing a wrap? If not in the original document, then perhaps the CUPS driver is inserting them incorrectly? I'm just trying to think of what could be…
