I’ve been given three very different gardening books over the past few weeks which will be ideal for times when the weather is not amenable to plotting.
Assortedpixels has sent me the paperback Allotted Time by Robin Shelton, which has the byline Two Blokes, One Shed, No Idea! The blurb on the back cover ends by saying Funny, touching and occasionally even instructive, this book will appeal to anyone who has ever found solace in the ability to take a bare patch of earth and make something grow.
In the bookshop on Saturday I phoned Brenda, one of the really nice customers, to say that the book she’d ordered had arrived. We talked about the shop closing and on asking me what I was going to do I told her that I intended spending more time on the plot. Later on she came into the shop to collect her book and very kindly gave me a copy of Bringing a Garden to Life by Jenny Steel. It’s an A4 sized hardback full of superb photos and useful information. The author also has this excellent Wildlife Gardening website.
The third book is In Tune With The Moon 2009 by Michel Gros – the complete day-by-day planner for growing, and living in 2009. I received this from Veg Plotting in return for the link I have here to VP’s Open Garden and the donation that I made to WaterAid. The book looks as though it will be a fascinating read, although I’m not sure just how much of it I’ll end up applying to my growing or life!

Hi Flighty – thanks for the link love! I think it’s one of those books to read and make up your mind whether to give it a go, or to think it’s a load of old tosh!

Well, you will certainly have great things to read and plan as you have more free time on your hands! Is this the last week at the bookshop? I’m sad about its closing 😦

So sorry to hear the bookshop is closing, what a great shame. How kind of the customer to give you a very useful book. You can never have too much time for gardening, or too many books! Today I had a day off and spent a few hours having a tidy in the garden. One day I hope to try gardening by the moon, I must read up on it sometime? x

Louise thanks! She really is a lovely lady who I also deliver to from the hardware store.
I hope to be plotting tomorrow and Thursday as I’ve done very little the past couple of weeks.
I’ll do a review entry once I’ve read the book so you’ll see what I think of the idea! xx

How lovely, your gifts, I mean! When I clicked on the Allotment book link, I laughed at this: “The only deafening sound seemed to be the noise of the weeds growing as they attacked the plot with more enthusiasm than knowledge.” Sounds like an enjoyable read that most gardeners could relate to. The next book sounds beautiful and will bring life and beauty to the winter days. On to the next…I am quite fascinated by the moon and its influences ~ especially living close to the sea. When it’s a clear night, it passes by my bedroom window and says good night 🙂 I’m sorry the book shop is closing too…but as they say when one door closes, another opens…

Hey you know what would be really neat? A yearbook or almanac with different seeds inserted into removable paper flaps on each page, and growing info for the provided seeds…
Can’t say where that idea came from, since I read your post and then looked up and saw people bleeding from their eyes on “Fringe”. Very random eh? xx

How flippin’ lovely! I love getting books and things through the post! Makes my day!
Nikki does have a point. Saturday will be a bit of sad day but it’s also the start of a new chapter, (book shop – chapter, see what I did there?) so exciting times ahead too!

Glo I’m well chuffed with them. I shall save the allotment book for a cold, dark, wet Sunday afternoon when I’ll need cheering up! There’s some great photos in the wildlife one. As for the moon one I’ll let you know.
Thanks…that’s what they say! xx

Carolyn hello and welcome! Yes it is sad, and it now means that there’s only got one local, and not very good, one hereabouts. It sounds rather funny doesn’t it, but really was kind of her to do that.
I see that I’m going to have to read that moon book and do a review! xx
