Sensory analyses revealed a shelf life of 19 d for farmed turbot. The production of total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N) and trimethylamine-nitrogen (TMA-N) was low and reached levels close to 40 mg TVB-N/ 100 g muscle and 3.5 mg /TMA-N/100 g muscle, even after 40 d of refrigerated storage. The pH value of turbot muscle increased from an initial value of 6.3 to close to 7.0 after 29 d of iced storage. Microbial growth was slow in iced turbot: total aerobic counts reached levels below 7 log colony forming units/g units even after 40 d of storage. Lactic acid bacteria—mainly Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. delbrueckii and Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis strains—were predominant among the proteolytic strains isolated from iced turbot. Proteolytic strains of L. lactis subsp. lactis, Brochothrix thermosphacta, Plesiomonas shigelloides, Proteus vulgaris, and Pantoea species were also isolated from temperature-abused turbot, such proteolytic strains being predominant with respect to nonpro-teolytic microorganisms, suggesting a preferential role of such proteolytic bacteria in the spoilage of turbot. The slow bacterial growth, together with the relative predominance of lactic acid bacteria over Gram-negative microorganisms, may be related to the extraordinary maintenance of the quality and extended shelf life of farmed turbot.

Ten tendons were sonicated in continuous waves at a space-averaged intensity of 0.5 W cm-2 for 5 min every day. The remaining 14 tendons were mock-sonicated as controls. After nine consecutive treatments, the tendons were excised under anesthesia and compared for differences in tensile strength, tensile stress and energy absorption capacity. Sonication at 0.5 W cm-2 induced a significant increase in the tensile strength (p less than .02), tensile stress (p less than .005) and energy absorption capacity (p less than .001) of the tendons. These findings suggest that high-intensity sonication may not be necessary to augment the healing strength of tendons and that sonication at similarly low intensities may enhance the healing process of surgically repaired human tendo calcaneus.

The replicator region of the symbiotic plasmid of Rhizobium etli CFN42 was cloned and sequenced. ... more The replicator region of the symbiotic plasmid of Rhizobium etli CFN42 was cloned and sequenced. A plasmid derivative (pH3) harbouring a 5.6 kb Hindlll fragment from the symbiotic plasmid was found to be capable of independent replication and eliminated the symbiotic plasmid when introduced into a R. efli CFNXlOl strain (a r e d derivative). The stability and the copy number of pH3 were the same as that of the symbiotic plasmid, indicating that the information required for stable replication and incompatibility resides in the 5.6 kb Hindlll fragment. The sequence analysis of this fragment showed the presence of three ORFs similar in sequence and organization to repA, repB and repC described for the replicator regions of the Agrobacferium plasmids pTiBGS3 and pRiA4b and for the R. leguminosarum cryptic plasmid pRL8JI. Hybridization studies showed that p42d-like replicator sequences are found in the symbiotic plasmids of other R. etli strains and in a 'cryptic' plasmid of R. fropici.
