e history of British architecture and urban planning in the Middle East is a complex and contradi... more e history of British architecture and urban planning in the Middle East is a complex and contradictory one. ough clearly and directly in uenced by British imperial and colonial policies, the architecture of the region (both designed and built) is often profoundly and deliberately local; while urban plans, almost uniformly manifestations of transplanted European planning ideas, generally remained on the drawing board. is history-of the planned, the built, and the partially implemented-is further complicated by the use of the defective, overarching geographical rubric 'Middle East'. e regions considered in this chapter (Egypt, and the areas that became the Mandates of Palestine (including modern-day Israel and Jordan) and Iraq, while geographically contiguous, had signi cantly di erent relationships with the British empire and imperialism. is concerns how and why the British presence arrived in the region, as well as what its imperial goals were. ese relationships, as varied as the countries themselves, are clearly legible in the built environment.
