She'd taken the appropriate amount of care on her makeup and hair, and wondered whether she was getting ahead of herself as she glanced down at the show-y feminine garments which managed to cover the important areas. Were they ready to extend their relationship to a level which required underwear of lace and silk?

Of course they were.

Technically, they'd been interested in one another for the best part of a year but it would have been too uncomfortable for others if they'd started anything while on the TARDIS. Now, a month after they'd begun a proper, more serious relationship they were ready to go onward in things. She just had to convince herself entirely of the fact and release any doubt she had. They were ready, and they were both certainly willing, Barbara could tell that from the way he'd kissed her just the other evening. The way he lingered over her and looked into her eyes...

Barbara wriggled into a simple red dress she had selected carefully and laid out earlier in the day. It hugged in just the right places, and gave her a kind of dazzling quality one might call 'sex appeal', but Barbara wasn't one to use such terms. She was appealing, and that was good enough. Hopefully.
Barbara quickly moved through the ranks of the Youth Movement, steadying the troops for the final push. Few remained of the enemy, and she could see them scrambling to gather their remaining soldiers for one more assault. When the order came, they ran as one, swarming and overwhelming the enemy until they fled in scattered groups of twos and threes. Chase was not given, it wasn't worth it. The ranks cheered in triumph, and were getting ready to provide assistance to the other forces around their lines and other parts of the ship, when the word came through:

They had won.

It was one battle of many to come, of course, but it demonstrated that all of the preparation they'd gone through was worth it. Barbara pushed through the crowds of young rag-tag soldiers to where Ian had been leading. His feet had just reached the ground again when her arms were flung around his person in celebration. His flying serum had worked, and was now being controlled better, so that he could go higher and stop as well as go all with his mind. As a result, it provided that little bit more motivation to their troops, like some kind of secret weapon which might one day win the war. Hopefully there'd be time to perfect it a little more before the next attack.

Barbara squeezed Ian to her in amongst the cheering teens and young adults. "We did it!" she cried over his shoulder, "we won!\
Eei eei oh! I simply want to put it all down and see it set out nicely.

Description: Moderately tall (roughly 5'8”), slender brunette. Dressed sensibly in practical trousers with a loose, comfortable shirt or long sleeved jumper and flat shoes. When not expecting to be climbing her way through cities or forests, Barbara might choose to wear a knee length dress or skirt. However, when the occasion called for it, she would adorn herself in stylish, modest dresses and sensible high-heeled shoes.

Despite her dress sense having leaned more toward functionality, she still managed to look pleasant. She was often described in the television stories by various characters as 'beautiful', and 'strikingly attractive' in the novels. And while she may not be beautiful in the sense of Twiggy, Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly, Barbara harboured an inner beauty that radiated to the outside, which only became more noticeable through her travels with the Doctor (Novelisation: Doctor Who and the Crusades).

She was characterised by a bouffant hairstyle and didn't wear her hair down in the television series but it was occasionally mentioned that she wore it down in curls before travelling with the Doctor (Fic: Two Planets). Her hair was quite often described as 'thick' and 'dark'.

Personality: Barbara could be described as mature, using her head to make a number of decisions, rather than choosing things on a whim. However, her intuitions and instincts were strong, and often influenced her ways of thinking. For example, she would usually trust someone until she had witnessed them do something that would cause her to think otherwise, but sometimes a person just wouldn't sit right with her, such as Vasor, who had rescued Barbara and Ian from the snowy mountains (Keys of Marinus).

From her first adventure (Serial: An Unearthly Child), Barbara's ability to handle the unexpected shone. However, as her mind was opened further and she became more accepting of other life forms, what was classed as the 'impossible', time travel, space travel, and the way in which she tackled challenges shifted from asking questions to seeking answers. For example, after landing thousands of years in the past, Barbara asked questions about where they were, how they would get home and, for want of a better description, cried when it all became too much. At the very end of their travels, Barbara tried to think of ways to get back to Vicki, trapped in a haunted house (Serial: The Chase), stood her ground as much as she could in front of Nero (Serial: The Romans) as well as the Aztec Executioner and High Priest (Serial: The Aztecs), saved Ian, Susan and the Doctor from hypnotic brains in jars (Serial: The Keys of Marinus) and so the list goes on. Seeing the universe and strands of time in both the past and present, deepened her love of all areas of life, and gave her a greater willingness to take the good with the bad (Doctor Who and the Crusades novelisation).

She stood firm to her ideas and views. In France, Barbara stood resolute, despite the opposition she received from Ian, who expressed a popular opinion of the time (Serial: The Reign of Terror). And while in Mexico, Barbara was determined to change history until her attempts failed (Serial: The Aztecs). Outside of the TARDIS, Barbara could have been described as a modern thinker, believing that she could do anything which she set her mind to. Her ideas of marriage and gender roles were often challenged, mostly by men and her mother, believing that a woman's place wasn't necessarily in the home but wherever she wanted it to be and no man should have a say in it. There were some social protocols which Barbara did find inescapable. Either because they had been drilled into her from a young age by her father, or she found that she enjoyed them.

Toward the younger members of their party, Barbara was maternal. She was willing to offer kind words, protection, advice and comfort without thinking about herself. This could be seen in many moments such as calming Susan after she became hysterical and trying to protect Sabitha (Serial: Keys of Marinus).

Family and Friends:
Barbara's parents both came from small families, so it was inevitable that she would have a few siblings. However, the war took her father while Barbara was still young. A telegram arrived on Christmas (Book: Short Trips - Tell Me You Love Me). Her mother didn't remarry but continued to raise Barbara on her own and expected Barbara to follow a similar path to what she did – marriage and family. So at the news that she wished to go to university and study history, Barbara's mother wasn't the most agreeable towards the idea.

Both sets of grandparents were visited on the usual occasions; Christmas, Easter, birthdays, but didn't play an overly large part in Barbara's life. One grandmother, on her father's side, kept a pretty garden she admired in the country side but living in the city, Barbara found it difficult to begin and then maintain a garden of her own. Though she did have a pot of purple pansies she tended to. They sat by her kitchen window (Thread: Ten_Spot)

One aunt lived nearby Barbara's flat once she'd moved out and tried to maintain the relationship they had when Barbara was younger, by inviting her to tea at a local cafe. Barbara often either forgot or became swept up in school work and never attended (BFA: 1963). After they had arrived back on Earth, Barbara discovered that the Aunt had died and visited her grave especially on her birthday each year from then on.

Roughly a year after leaving the TARDIS, Barbara and Ian eloped to Gretna Green (Book: Face of the Enemy) much to their parents' displeasure. A month after Barbara put the idea forward to Ian (Fic: Five Things Ian Does When He Gets Home), they left early in the morning and drove to the boarder to be married in the afternoon. The morning after, they told their parents via telephone but stayed in a small bed and breakfast for a week after until their parents' tempers cooled down. To assist in the process of parental acceptance, they had portraits done and, for the fun of it, Barbara did her best to follow the tradition of something new, something old, something borrowed and something blue.
* New was a dress she had bought for the occasion
* Old was a hair clip she wore on her first day to Coal Hill which her mother had kept for sentimental reasons
* Borrowed was a broach she had technically stolen from her mother with the intent of returning it. The reason behind the theft, was that she knew her mother would have appreciated being a part of the union somehow.
* Blue was the pair of knickers she wore under her dress. It amused both Barbara and Ian, as they were a similar shade to that of the TARDIS.

It was unfortunate that Barbara's mother disapproved of Ian (Thread: Casualty Is More Romantic With You). It made family gatherings somewhat difficult and would sometimes end with Barbara and Ian arguing over silly things that her mother had brought up, or how much leverage they should give her in regards to their son. If her mother visited for lunch, Barbara would take her out into the garden for tea soon after lunch was done, so that Ian could have some space (Fic: Chittington and the Strange Day of Unplaceable Expectation).

Together, Barbara and Ian were unique in their own right but still fitted together rather well. Like all couples, they bickered and argued over things, though very rarely anything more trivial than whose turn it was to wash up, or who forgot to put out the bins, or who should fix the kitchen cabinet door (unless it involved Barbara's mother). A trick Barbara picked up from Ian, was to hug him until he stopped pulling irritated or disappointed faces. This particularly came in handy once Barbara was pregnant and kept trying to do things as normal, despite Ian's protests that she should have been resting (Thread: Treasure Hunt).

In their marriage, Barbara had simply assumed Ian to be the head of the household because that was how it worked but there would always be moments where, through her organised and forward nature, Barbara would have more control. Especially over matters such as having things fixed (once Ian had tried and found that he lacked the skills - though he'd never admit it) and keeping Ian's diary up to date with various family gatherings, social dinners, birthdays and anniversaries. But even so, they enjoyed doing things together rather than assuming roles. Ian, of course, would never admit to enjoying cooking with Barbara or helping her with her sewing or the odd spot of knitting, however she knew and never pushed him to admit it in public. They also quickly learned what one another liked in life outside of the TARDIS. Barbara knew exactly where to kiss Ian, how to hold his hand, what to cook him for dinner on special occasions, where he would leave his pyjamas each morning (which made washing them easier), which television program he wouldn't want to give up for the world, which of his records were his favourite and the list goes on.

There were small things which they contrasted in, aside from their academic fields. One example was Barbara's easy dismissal of music, despite Ian's love of it. She would attend concerts and dances but there was such a small amount of music that she cared for, that she didn't particularly bother with a lot of it. Though she did have room for a little bit of the Beatles and Buddy Holly in her life, with a touch of Elvis and some Glen Millar pieces. Another example was the way in which Barbara's need to be organised and neat most of the time, would confuse and often frustrate Ian. He couldn't understand her need for things to be folded and put away properly, rather than scrunched and stuffed under pillows, or why breakfast had to occur straight after getting out of bed or even why Barbara had to put on make-up.

After roughly a year of marriage, Barbara and Ian decided that they weren't getting any younger and wanted children before they grew too old to keep up with them. Part of the decision was moving out of a small apartment and into a bigger house. On the day of moving, Barbara found out that she was pregnant and soon after, John Alydon Ganatus Chesterton (Book: Byzantium!) was born. They decided against further children after an alien encounter one day at the beach (Thread: Day At The Beach). John grew up to have a career in music performance, where he changed his name to 'Johnny Chess' or 'Johnny Chester' (Wiki Reference).

One of Barbara's favourite times of the day was kissing John good morning. He out grew it faster than what Barbara would have liked but it was to be expected, really. Everyone has to grow up. But even after John had grown and left their home, she still tried to look after him where possible. She took joy in cooking for him, tidying his apartment(s) and darning his socks, even though she grumbled about it.

Background:

Barbara grew up near on the outskirts of London with both of her parents and most of the rest of her family nearby. She always had a large circle of friends, though she would only feel close with a few of them. However, Barbara spent more time buried in books than playing outside, though no one could understand why.

The only serious injury Barbara has ever experienced happened as she was returning home after school. Her friends were seeing how far they could jump across a gap on a stone fence and talked her in to trying. Being more lithe than athletic, Barbara fell and broke her leg Thread: Casualty Is More Romantic With You). No traces of it were left once the cast was removed, much to the joy of Barbara's mother.

After they had received the news of Barbara's father, her mother tried to pack them both up so that they could live in the country with her grandparents but they were held in their area and couldn't go anywhere. A lot of Barbara's childhood friends had moved away when the war began and they fell out of touch - being children, letter writing wasn't the easiest of tasks, and was only made more difficult because of the war. Before her father died, Barbara would sometimes put down her books and look out the windows, up to the sky and wonder what her father was doing and if he was safe. The air raids used to scare her a little more but someone would start up a sing-along and it would help to pass the time (Book: Short Trips - Tell Me You Love Me).

Barbara's mother was also a practical woman and had made sure that Barbara was able to sew on buttons, darn socks, repair torn clothes. She also taught Barbara to knit and do a little embroidery. As Barbara grew older and developed more skills, her mother taught her how to make her own clothes. Not least of all because Barbara was interested in learning herself. She wasn't wonderful at it but because of her mother, Barbara had developed enough skills to get by with decent clothing (Thread: Ten_Spot).

After discovering boys, Barbara partially abandoned books for dances and the odd date. She didn't usually chase boys as such, but sometimes found one took interest in her. Her very first date was to the cinema to see a zombie movie, which was not at all in Barbara's tastes, and she decided not to see him again (Thread: Ten_Spot).

Barbara never had been one for being timid but hormones had taken over, transforming her in to an almost alternate woman. A crush might not have turned her into a blushing violet, but it certainly gave her pause, and made her think very carefully about what it was that she wore or said when the crush in question was about. Once, and only once, a friend she was not all that close to, tried to set Barbara up with a mutual friend she was interested in. He was as nice as Barbara thought he would be, but whatever they had fizzled out after a few days and Barbara thought it best not to provoke any more set ups.

One other boy Barbara saw for a time was part of a small gang that carried flip knives and roamed the streets once the sun had gone down (BFA: 1963). She met him at a bus stop one evening after working on the local library, and he followed her home. However he soon grew bored when Barbara wouldn't sneak out to meet him at night, and he ended it.

Barbara never saw any reason to drink copious amounts of alcohol at any one time. The first time she drank, Roy, a local boy she attended school with, had met her at a dance. He seemed nice and charming, to an extent. She sat with him out the back of the dance hall and they shared a bottle of scotch he had pilfered from his uncle. The next day Barbara experienced a terrible hangover and went right off scotch from that moment on.

Despite all of this, her studies remained steady and Barbara finished high school with relatively high marks. Not high enough to top the school, but above average.

In university Barbara discovered books again and began to ignore a lot of the late night social scenes that her friends were still interested in. She'd go on occasion, but the evenings she enjoyed most were spent curled up in bed with a text book or a long loved, slightly dog-eared classic. Through continual reading, research and fostering from her lecturers, Barbara developed a deep fondness for Ancient cultures and history. Most importantly, the Aztecs, which became her specialty (Serial: The Aztecs).

However, one particular evening her friends dragged her out, they introduced her to a young man by the name of Gregory, who she went on to date for over a year. They discussed marriage and children, planning out the rest of their lives, except for one fact: Gregory was rather old fashioned and Barbara wasn't interested in staying at home once she had married. Despite how much she loved him and how pleased her mother was with the prospect of Barbara settling, she wasn't going to give in on the matter and soon after that, he lost interest in her and moved on. Eventually, Barbara moved on, too and went back to her text books and classics.

After university, she wasn't certain how to continue. She could go on and work up to a PhD, or she could go to teachers' college, teach for a while, then come back to university and work for her PhD. The second option seemed like the most logical (though neither appealed to her mother)– she wouldn't be as employable with a PhD and no experience. So she went to teachers' college and, before she knew it, graduated with honours.

The next problem for Barbara was to locate employment in her field but, the field was somewhat limited for the moment, forcing Barbara into temporary secretarial jobs (Fic: Two Planets), most of which was part time with odd casual days at various schools around the area. Though it was disappointing to not have a secure job in education, Barbara saw the casual days as practice for when she did secure something more permanent. She still lived with her mother, who was becoming more irritable the longer Barbara stayed unmarried and childless.

After a months as a secretary for a large advertising firm, Barbara was offered a permanent, full-time position at Coal Hill School, which she excitedly took. It was her first day at Coal Hill, during a staff meeting, that she met Ian Chesterton, as well as the remainder of the staff. She found Ian to be interesting; his conversations were engaging and different. While other teachers gossiped about one another, their wives, and husbands, Ian preferred to discuss a science theory he'd been reading or his thoughts on the ways in which the world worked. He was also someone who, like Barbara, was comfortable with silence, which was uncommon in other people, she found.

Her second day on the job, while Ian was hiding in her room from hormone driven girls, she discovered that he had such brilliant blue eyes (Thread: SWS). Her visual memory refused to let them go and even after they had been married for many, many years, Ian's blue eyes were still one of her favourite things. The afternoon Ian hid in Barbara's room from hormonal girls, was the beginning of a rather close friendship which grew quickly.

However, gossip was rife at Coal Hill (Thread: SWS), and within a couple of weeks, the two were seen as an item by everyone except themselves. It didn't matter how much they denied it, the rumours were strong. So strong, in fact, that the head master pulled them into his office for a discussion on the fact (due to his lack of enthusiasm for dating colleagues). Like always, they denied it and told him they were just friends (Thread: Ten_Spot). He let them go and the rumours did eventually die out but there was always an underlying belief.

The other staff at Coal Hill were interesting. Though she would never admit it to Ian, she always laughed at the way in which Rhonda, the head of Mathematics would pinch at Ian's cheeks (Thread: Ten_Spot). She supposed it was her way of flirting but as Ian was always irritable after, Barbara assumed that it never worked. At one point Gregg, another science teacher, had attempted to talk her into going home with him but she politely declined and avoided him for the next week (Thread: Ten_Spot). Though Gregg often had a habit of drinking too much at staff parties and attempting to talk any woman back to his house or into the nearest closet (Thread: Ten_Spot).

One thing which she always disliked was the chalk dust. Barbara took to keeping a rag by the side of the board to wipe her hands on, because she would always forget about the amount of dust on her hands, then go to wipe her skirt or her face (Thread: Ten_Spot). Indicators that she had done as much were the giggles which came from the students. These incidents were the only things which broke Barbara's usual strict school marm appearance. That and the step just in front of the office which she always tripped up.

The heating at Coal Hill was not the most reliable, particularly at the end of the day, when it had been on for several hours. As Barbara and Ian would often spend time in one another's rooms after the final bell, they often chose whichever of the two's rooms was most warm. One such afternoon, both heaters were broken and Ian made a head source out of Bunsen burners, which was adequate for their hands at least (Thread: Ten_Spot).
https://first-in-time.livejournal.com/16349.html?view=comments#comments
ooc","canon

Fairy Tale Meme

(my thread)

Barbara inwardly grumbled as she stepped off the bus and rushed toward the playschool. He looked as though all of his birthdays had come at once, his eyebrows rocketed high enough to almost disappear into his hair line, and the smile that lit up his features, became so wide that his face looked likely to break in two.

“Happy birthday, Barbara.”
https://first-in-time.livejournal.com/14972.html?view=comments#comments
ooc","fic
Five Places Barbara Hasn't Gone But Would Like To.

1) Somewhere where we're not being killed or chased would be nice. We could relax and catch up on much needed sleep.

2) Mars - I'd like to have seen just how close to the truth all those silly 'sci-fi' adventures Ian reads are true.

3) I'd like to have gone back in time to see my father before he went off to the war. I was alive at the time but I wasn't very old and I haven't many memories of him.

4) Somewhere secluded to think every once in a while. All the feelings and intense emotions build up and while adventuring is all very well and good, some time to digest it would have been even better.

5) Ian once mentioned a picture he found in the library where a city is contained in a glass bowl and two suns are up in the sky. The trees looked gold and the entire landscape seemed to have this orange tinge to it. I'd like to have visited that place, wherever it was but the Doctor merely huffed and grumbled at us for suggesting it.

* * * * *

Five Historical Event in History Barbara would like to visit.

1) Despite having already visited to Aztecs I would like to go back again as a person, rather than a goddess. But I can't really list places I've already been, can I? I suppose not. In that case, I think I'd like to go back to Egypt and watch the Pyramids of Giza being built. As a member of royalty, of course; not certain if I could handle being a slave.

2) Queen Elizabeth the First's coronation. I don't believe that any explanation is needed, really.

3) I'd like to have visited Copernicus and his workshop, see how he worked and why. Not a great deal is known about him historically, you see?

4) Oh! And Leonardo as he painted The Mona Lisa.

5) It might have been interesting to be a bit of a fly on the wall during the construction of the American Bill of Rights, to see what was rejected and if any arguments broke out or not.

* * * * *

Five things Barbara changed her mind about.

1) The impossible. When you've walked on 'alien sand and hear the cries of strange birds', it's a little difficult to keep one's mind shut in a box.

2) Guy Fawkes and the gun powder plot. It's only too easy to assume Mr. Fawkes and his men were bored men with a deep grudge against the government and too much time on their hands but he was....so much more.

3) Chinese superstition is quite silly to simply hear about but after one particular visit to China and I think my mind has been changed for forever.

4) Time Travel and aliens. I believe that this point speaks for itself.

5) History itself. From my original viewpoint, history was a straight line. Things happened and then everything went on afterward, a little changed because of the event but generally the same. Then, I believed that it was possible to change time. More specifically, I believed that I could convince the Aztecs out of their sacrificial traditions but I now see that that sort of thing is not possible.

* * * * *

Five times she really wished she wasn't quite so nosy.

1) When I found the Daleks. I wish that I had put my foot down and just let the Doctor go on his own, though I don't think he would have lasted. Either that, or I wouldn't have let us split up. It might have been more favorable to have Ian with me when I was taken to their prison.

2) To an extent, I wish that I hadn't talked Ian into exploring London a little further in 1605. If we hadn't entered that pub, we wouldn't have been split up but I wouldn't have met Guy Fawkes.

3) I didn't believe in ghosts before I visited China but when I poked around an abandoned house with Vicki and a local man, we stumbled upon a disturbed spirit. It was awfully frightening but when I returned with Ian the next day, it had gone.

4) I do wish that I hadn't stepped out of the Aztec tomb. It would have saved a lot of heartache and time.

5) When we were shrunk, we landed in the front garden of a house that was experimenting with pest control. I would have to like have had enough sense not to pick up the poison and nearly kill myself.

* * * * *

Barbara had rushed home from work to her small apartment that sat on a forgettable street near the out-skirts of London. It had taken her almost an hour to get home, leaving her with bearly enough time to get ready.

She dumped her briefcase and handbag hurredly by the door before quickly showering in her tiny bathroom with the window that wouldn't quite close all the way. Shivering, she stepped out onto the cold tiles and wrapped a towel about herself in hopes of warming up. Relatively dry but still quite cold, she rushed to her wardrobe. All day she had been thinking of which dress would be best for the occassion. The red one without sleeves? No. Too short. The yellow one that swished as she walked? No. Too cold.

Before too long, her bed was covered in rejections. A glance at the clock told her that she had to choose something soon, else she'd still be wrapped in a towel when Ian arrived. She dug through the mound. How did she accumulate so many clothes? Not that it mattered. Perhaps she'll have to sort through them one day and give some to charity or something. At the moment, however, there were more important things to worry about.

From out of the pile, she selected a black dress. Not too fitted, possibly a little low. But she didn't have time to give it much more thought. The important thing was that she was certain Ian would like it. Wouldn't he? She'd best not think about that too much either.

As she carefully pulled on stockings, applied make-up and found shoes, Barbara wondered why she suddenly felt like Ian's opinions mattered so much. In all fairness, his opinions had always mattered but lately they seemed to be affecting the most silly things. Such as what she would or wouldn't wear.

She stopped to look in the mirror and sighed a little. Her hair wasn't quite right.
https://first-in-time.livejournal.com/14423.html?view=comments#comments
ian chesterton"}]}}
