Applications should be sent by 1 December 2025 directly through our application form.

Applicants should complete the online application form, and submit it with the documents listed in the form. In addition to personal and academic data, applicants are required to list their degrees and in particular to state their reasons for wishing to pursue the Diploma. Students should include a letter of recommendation from their supervisor or another scholar. For those who have already obtained a PhD, submitting a copy of the diploma will be sufficient.. The applicants will be informed in due time about Selection committee decisions.

Normally, students are required to pay an enrolment fee, with the exception of students enrolled at Sapienza University of Rome, including Erasmus students.

Conditions for admission to the Diploma

  • a bachelor’s degree in one of the humanities;
  • a working knowledge of Latin: one intensive Latin course will be organized at the beginning of the program to refresh students’ knowledge. Students may skip the course if they present a university certificate demonstrating a strong prior knowledge of classical Latin.
  • a good knowledge of English and a working knowledge of Italian;
  • residence in Rome for the duration of the course (for those enrolled in the in-class program), attendance at mandatory classes, the writing of a research paper (for the annual program — see more information here), and individual research work are required.

Types of Enrolment

New EUROPEAN DIPLOMA IN MEDIEVAL STUDIES offers three types of enrolment both in-class and online: annual, modular, and personalised:

  1. The full programme lasts approximately 4 months, from January to May. It consists of 17 weeks (from Monday to Friday) of 15 hours each (from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM), for a total of 255 hours. Exceptionally, the Codicology II course will be held as an intensive course (morning and afternoon).
    The annual enrolment fee is € 1.000. Students coming from Sapienza University of Rome, including Erasmus students, do not have to pay the enrolment fee.
    The annual programme can be divided into two modules, A and B (see attached brochure), which can be completed in two consecutive years.
  2. The modular programme allows students to enroll in one of the pre-defined or personalized modules of three courses. The enrolment fee is € 600.
  3. Personalised enrolment allows the student to choose one or more courses among those offered during the year. This formula requires payment: € 300 for one course; € 500 for two courses; € 600 for three courses. Each course includes both Part I and Part II of each discipline. Payment is not available for individual parts only.

One scholarship is planned for the year 2025-2026. It will be cofunded by FIDEM and SIEPM (Société Internationale pour l’Étude de la Philosophie Médiévale).
