Within data warehouse, data is usually stored in a dimensional model. On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) is an approach to analysis and reporting that enables a user to easily and selectively extract and view data from different points of view based on a multidimensional data structure called a cube [2]. There are numerous data warehousing platforms available on the market. Exhaustive data warehousing platform comprises of data warehouse server, OLAP server and some data mining functionality. There are no present standards to support interoperability between different OLAP systems. In this article, two major initiatives towards standardization are examined: XMLA and JOLAP. Web service is a piece of business logic, located somewhere on the Internet, that is accessible through standard-based Internet protocols such as HTTP or SMTP [3]. Web services are neither language nor platformspecif...

Publishing study programmes using semantic web technologies enables students to easily search and select study topic of their interest. In this paper, we discuss the way to transform data from production-grade information system's relational database to semantic data. The process of transforming starts with building ontology for describing study programmes. Data from relational database is mapped to the semantic model. Finally, we present the study programmes from semantic model which are used by the web application. Project presented in this paper took first step in introducing ISVU to semantic web and demonstrated possibility to integrate data about academic programmes.

In this paper we survey the literature and software in this field and identify the set of necessary features that make APAS comprehensive-such that it can support all key stages in the assessment process. Put differently, comprehensive APAS is generic enough to meet the demands of "any" computer science course. Despite the vast number of publications, the choice of software turns out to be very limited. We contribute by developing Edgar, a comprehensive open-source APAS which, to the best of our knowledge, exceeds any other similar free and/or open-source tool. Edgar is the result of three years of development and usage in, for the time being, eight courses dealing with various programming languages and paradigms (C, Java, SQL, etc.). Edgar supports various text-based programming languages, multi-correct multiple-choice questions, provides rich exam logging and monitoring infrastructure to prevent potential fraudulent behaviour, and subsequent data analysis and visualization of students' scores, exams, question quality, etc. It can be deployed on all major operating systems and is written in a modular fashion so that it can be adjusted and scaled to a custom fit. We comment on the architecture and present data from real-world use-cases to support these claims. Edgar is in active use today (1000+ students per semester) and it is being constantly developed with new features.
Business process management systems selection guidelines: Theory and practice

This paper presents a set of criteria and proposes guidelines for BPMS selection. The proposal has been developed on the basis of literature overview and the feedback from practical experience in BPM projects. The results of this research are valuable for both academic and business community.

Semantic based search should, with as little messages (traffic) as possible, return just those relevant documents stored throughout the network thus achieving precision and recall values comparable to those of correspondent centralized system. In this article we propose protocols for self-organizing P2P network that arranges links between peers according to peer's content. In proposed network peers organize themselves into "semantic communities" but without losing links to other semantic communities. Proposed network has no prior knowledge of the semantics of documents that are to be stored in the system.

This procedure is suitable when there are multiple independent organizational units that are producing data of the same structure that is eventually loaded into the consolidated fact table. In such cases, it is important for one organizational unit's errors not to influence the others. We show that horizontal fragmentation improves data warehouse's data quality, namely, completeness and timeliness data quality dimensions. The proposed procedure relies on metadata and is generic and applicable to any data warehouse.

We argue that existing methodologies are no longer relevant because of the constant technological changes in the field of Semantic Web as well as in the Web development. We also argue that providing unique development methodology for all Semantic Web applications is not satisfactorily and that specialization of methodologies is needed. To establish foundation for such methodologies we conducted an analysis of Semantic Web solutions resulting in a categorization of Semantic Web applications. In this paper we present our categorization scheme and provide precise definitions for each of the identified categories.

In this paper we consider the influence of the system load and the system throughput on the response time, as well as a possibility of the accurate response time prediction - whereby that mechanism may be a foundation for (automatized) decision-making for a query (or DB procedure) scheduling. The possible application of proposed method can be the estimation of the optimal moment for the data transfer from OLTP system into DW or the appropriate moment for the complex query execution.

The multi-meta model is based on the entity-relationship model. The corresponding multi-meta database contains the description of existing database models. In the description of models contained in the multi-meta base, the redundancy has been maximally reduced without loss of existing knowledge. In this way, any ambiguity regarding the model description has been eliminated. The restructuring of knowledge about models is simplified, while the model consistencies are preserved. The necessary conditions are defined that have to be satisfied by each database model. If these conditions are not met, the described procedures for the model restructuring have to be applied.

Data warehouse as a part of the higher education information system in Croatia

We address issues related to modelling and implementing a data warehouse for the higher education information system in Croatia. The purpose of the project is to provide a data querying service that will improve the understanding, planning and operational work of institutions of higher education in Croatia in order to facilitate and improve educational activities.

OCEANUS: a spatio-temporal data stream system prototype
Recent advances in wireless communication, miniaturization of spatially enabled devices and globa... more Recent advances in wireless communication, miniaturization of spatially enabled devices and global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) services have resulted in a large number of novel application domains. Applications in these novel domains (moving objects tracking, sensor networks, fleet management, real-time intelligent transportation systems, etc.) process huge volume of continuous streaming data, i.e. data that is produced incrementally over time, rather than being available in full before processing. Data stream management systems (DSMS) have been developed to manage continuous data streams. Usually based on relational paradigm, they have rudimentary support for spatial data. Recent research efforts in data stream management systems focus mainly on processing continuous queries over traditional data streams, and only a few papers addressed spatio-temporal continuous queries. In this paper we present OCEANUS, an ongoing effort to extend TelegraphCQ DSMS with spatial support pro...

Here, the Tanagra Project is presented, a large part of which is a simple MDBS API. This API is introduced, and the data model it uses is described. The layers of the API and the tasks and capabilities of each layer are defined. Ways of handling standard data operations are shown. Possible extensions of the API are discussed, as well as its limitations and shortcomings

Now new semantic Web-based technologies are deployed that enable true interoperability standards. This paper describes why we should consider possibilities of migrating existing applications into Semantic Web, and presents possible steps that could be taken in this challenging task.

However, challenges brought by new technologies often lead to modifications in architecture of the existing system. Two similar applications with different architecture not sharing the same code base present a possible point of improvement. Development of a new multi-tier application based on open standards was an attempt to solve problems brought by old architecture. Special attention was given to implementation of specific feature of existing applications. Quality solution was achieved using stable platform and design patterns.
