February fic links

Condensed from Twitter again -- man, I'm really going to have to start using delicious again. Or just upload my fic folders again? Votes, LJ? (Note how my grammar and sentence structure has been altered by Twitter-usage. Huh.)

February 2010 linkage:

Does anyone use Google Wave?

I've been absolutely binging on ciceqi 's FFVII fic for the past few weeks, and grabbing other rec's where I can get them. If anyone has recommendations for this fandom, I'd appreciate it!

One thing that struck me, in perusing the fandom, is the alternate terms for the Cetra. Specifically, "Ancients" and "Ancestors".

So, predictably, I've been developing this Stargate Atlantis/Final Fantasy VII crossover verse... *headdesk* Thing is, I can't really write. I'm good at the world building thing, once I actually make decisions on various options, but the writing? No attention span here, no sirree. Anyway, I've been using Wave this time to sort of, plot out loud with a few friends at the moment. (If anyone wants to join in, just let me know.) And I kinda have the beginnings of a plot! Not the middle or the end, and I think I'm the kind of person who needs all her ducks in a row before starting anything, but this is more than I usually get.

here's a bit of the bunny -- atmosphere sketchCollapse )

I have more of an idea of what I want the FFVII characters to do -- or not to do, as I'd like to avoid the tragic proportions of the original -- than I do of Atlantis. Actually, I'm kinda at a loss as to what the fuck I want Atlantis to do, period. I suppose I could always just have Sephiroth roaming Pegasus (oh god, the image)... Or have someone else write the Atlantis sections. Or something.

By the way, has anyone come across a piece written [almost] entirely in the present perfect? Just curious. (The original version of the atmosphere sketch had about 4 tenses, I think, lol. Not to mention multiple POV switches in one sentence [fragment]. Yay, stream of consciousness. I want to poke this into something resembling fic eventually, but that day is not today. Comments welcome, regardless.)

And now onto the backlog...

Most of what I've listed on Twitter can be found on my favorites page there. I really should start cataloguing on del.icio.us, since the tagging format is ideal, but... its rather overwhelming to consider the tens of thousands of fics I have squirrelled away on my computer. Hmm.

Anyway, links crossposted to LJ in Nov-Dec 2009! Will get around to the other ones in a bit.

Job update

So, I've been neglecting my journal. I really need to stop doing that.

Last time:
Posted on June 17th that I'd accepted the MIL position.

Since then:

Friday night I received an email from another person at MIL, who wanted to let me know that they had arranged for me to stay in a hotel for a few days until my apartment was ready. She wanted to know what time I was coming in on August first.

August first? Immediate reaction was that sort of deer-in-the-headlights, *blinkpanic* thing that I seem to do everything something unexpected crops up. The time frame I had been given initially for how long it would take for my paperwork to get to me put me at leaving mid-August, not the end of July. Eek.

So, emailing back a slightly more coherent version of huhwha?,  I had to wait until Monday for a reply. There goes my weekend to fretting. (You know, when I wasn't dling lots of yaoi doujinshi. Yes, I've been on a kick back to anime fandom. My roots! Excepting Buffy, of course, which I've never really left because of crossovers. Of which I found a Buffy/Bleach xover series. Here, linkie: Lone Flower, by Vathara. Digression? What's that?) Ahem. Where was I? Ah, yes.

Okay, bored of writing this. I keep getting distracted. Short version: Thought my contact was going to call me Monday night, ended up calling tonight, an hour late (though he apologized for that), and was fairly reassuring about stuff. CoE should be in their hands by end of week or beginning of next week, and then they'll mail it with the 3-day shipping. If this is a bit late, then I might have to go in on tourist and get the CoE there.

Now (or during the next business hours) I need to call the consulate and ask about the processing time for a visa with a CoE, and in person application. And rushed. Hopefully its only a day or three.

So. Looking at one-way fares. Some weird overnight ones from 730$, best around 850$. Eeek. (Unless I flew out of Seattle like the original plans, which would put it at 550$. But I think that's exam week for Eric? *sigh*) Should arrive around the first of August. Training/orientation for first week. Then summer break -- which I will spend at least a day of in Tokyo taking goofy pictures of the massive Gundam \o/. Then I start classes. Eeeeeeek. OHGODTHISISINLESSTHANTHREEWEEKS!!!!

*wanders off in a daze*

Fanfiction for all!

Have uploaded my fanfiction collection as of 6/13. Zipped in 4 files, about 230 MB. Unzipped, over 600 MB. Yes, of pure fanfiction, mostly html files.

Note: I did not write any of these, and some of the older stories are not ones I would recommend today. But! There's lots of fandoms and a large crossover section for anyone interested.

Have fun!

school update

So. Yeah. Classes have been going for a few weeks so far, and I've come to understand a few things.

1. I dislike business. No -- watashi wa business ga daikirai de, nigate desu. Nigate = do poorly at and dislike. Wonderful word. I talked to the prof for Business Chinese, because yanno, no business background and I wanted to know how to better participate. I'm not sure if he really understood what I was getting at, cuz he was just saying "oh, no one has background in it, and you're understanding more, right? You'll participate in the coming weeks, so its all good." or something to that effect, anyway. it worries me, but hopefully, since i have broached the topic with him, i won't end up with bad grades because of lack of class participation.

Oh, wait, so this is the one place i haven't bitched about it yet. Yeah. Turns out Business Chinese is (at least starting out as) an International Business class. Taught in Chinese. Meh. I should just stick to the classical culture stuff, but... *sigh*

2. I do, however, like my Chinese Business course. Go figure. Business culture, how people interact and such, I like that. I think the other class would be a hell of a lot better if my grasp of language hasn't been slipping so much lately. *sigh* And if Ai were still teaching it. Oh, Ai-laoshi, why must you abandon us and only teach a one hour lecture?

3. Speaking of Ai, I need to talk to her about grad schools for East Asian studies. I... wow, I just realized that she's one of the few language teachers that I've cultivated enough of a relationship with that I'd go and get advice from. Odd, that. Or, well, not so odd, considering the complete lack of extra effort on my part. I'm a horrible student.

And looking at grad schools? Terrifying. Absolutely fucking terrifying.

4. I'm waffling. Sometimes I get enthusiastic about horticulture, and wow wouldn't it be cool to work on greenhouse and hydroponic projects, and maybe even in China??? (was talking to the prof of my current Greenhouse and Protected Agriculture, and he said there should be internships in China, if I was interested o.O) And then I think, mmm, culture... what if i did stuff like with museums and research and stuff on old musty Chinese artifacts? *has a DanielJackson moment* As stated above... currently looking at like, U of Chicago's grad program for all things east asian, and it both excites and depresses me (my qualifications and confidence are like, zero).

Plants, Chinese. Plants, Chinese. *sigh*. Chinese plants?

5. I don't care about Japanese so much anymore. Stupid language. I haven't been watching anime, or keeping up with anything Japanese (unless you count fanfiction and the old copies of Gackt and Miyavi music i have on my comp, which yanno, yeahno). The culture and sociohistorical bits still interest me, but I'm taking the language just to finish out the year, and unfortunately, that hasn't been enough to motivate me to, well, do much of anything for the class. I'm trying to get better, but... yeah.

6. I'm using the gold star method to motivate myself outside of class, in other news. I have a weekly calendar for the rest of term set up, with categories of Japanese, Chinese, Chinese Art, and Chinese History. This is all in an effort to make me feel less utterly incompetent, btw. (I want to get into an EALL prog, but I don't feel i have enough of a culture background. Meh.) In any case, if I get the reading I've assigned myself done in a category, it gets marked out. If I take full notes in addition, I put a star there. And guess what?

I got a gold star! yayz!

(I went over the first chap of the first year book and the current section of the second year book, and copied all the vocab, kanji and grammar points within. w00t.) I can't start on the Art section yet, as my textbook is still at home, but I'm giving myself until sunday to outline the highlights of the Xia dynasty and earlier, as well as take notes out of the third year chinese textbook.

So, now that I've finished my hw, and I need to get up at seven, and its friggin 2 in the morning (Damn you Maldoror, and your LeeGaara fanfic!), I should probably go to bed.

Night all, and dreams.

Oct. 16th, 2007

yeah... anyone want to write a Scrubs/Harry Potter fusion? Anyone? (gah, so much crack, so little time... original thought was scrubs characters as hogwarts students, with basically the same personalities as their adult selves. But yeah.)

I have a midterm tomorrow/today. Chinese. I think I may fail.

internet

Well, the school's network was majorly effed up for the past week -- of course, I'm the last one to have the internet back. Meh.

It gave m e a good excuse to push Friendly Hostility off onto my roommates at least, as well as reading actual books.

No. Really.

Aaaaaaaaand I have no life. And if anyone knows of any job opportunities or internships for a Chinese major who's minoring in Horticultural Sciences, drop me a line. *grins* I've been getting funny looks from the profs in the plant classes I'm taking this semester when my introduction is not something like "organic hort major" but "Chinese". I'm beginning to love the double take I, a stocky female with distinctly Aryan coloring, is doing studying Chinese, and is sitting in a Small Tree and Fruit Production class. I collect odd looks nowadays -- deliberately, at least. I suppose its better to invite the lodd ooks than garner them for doing something normal.

Meh. Babble. Why am I babbling again? I need to update my websites. Like, am in dire need thereof. I'd rather plotbunny.

Speaking of, I've actually come up with a basic plot structure for an HP fic. I got stalled on the AB/GW fic, sadly -- I just can't seem to come up with a plot direction for that one. Maybe later, but I only have one friend to bounce the AB ideas off of, so... *sigh*

Ok, back to reading Dresden Files before I mire myself in a mental debate as to Heero's wereanimal(s).
