ok, i'm a geek
An Ultimate X-Men geek to be exact. (nerd, dork, dweeb, etc, you get the picture.)
This is the one American comic that I've read in its entirety. And I'm keeping up with the updates. I mean, i've been reading others, and gotten quite attached to a few *cough*TheAuthority*cough*, but... SQUEE!!!!!!
Yeah, the latest issue, 65... appeases my yaoi-obsessed self. I mean, there have been hints ever since Northstar entered the cast of this version of XMen, but...*bounces around*.
Back up for those who aren't familiar with Marvel stuff, Northstar is a character originally from Alpha Flight, who was outed (as gay) in issue... 180-something, I believe. Don't exactly remember, I only looked at the dozen or so issues from that part of the series. How did I find this out? Well, inspired by several fanfics I found that had the character of Northstar (which I did not read, not until I was more familiar with the character in the canon concept *boggles* not normal behaviour for me), I went looking on wikipedia. Which is GOD, by the way. And read the article on Northstar. And more recently, looked up "gay characters in fiction" or some such, of which there is a list, which gave me several titles to acquire, including the *heart* Authority.
Back to Northstar. And the Ultimate-verse.
When Northstar is introduced, its during the time when the XMen are looking into the mutant murders by Sinister. Jean and Nightcrawler? are investigating one area, and meet Jean-Paul Beaubier, aka Northstar. They try to recruit him for Xavier's school, safety reasons and such, and he's pretty much of the attitude "hell no", considering that his parents had wanted to send him to a school for gays for his safety when that had been found out. So, Northstar is pretty much outed immediately.
Not much later on, JeanPaul is the lone survivor of Sinister's attacks, so Jean (that's confusing now...codenames better) is at the hospital with him, going through his memories to find out how Sinister traps the young mutants. When Northstar wakes up, Jean's there with Piotr, Colossus. Northstar asks, "Is he single?" and Piotr (they keep switching from Piotr to Peter...gah) freezes -- turning into his metal form. Shock, yes, and its kept quite ambiguous as to whether its shock of a straight man being questioned by a gay man, or the panic of a man still in the closet.
Then there's Piotr's attachment to Wolverine, though I don't interpret that romantically as some ppl online do....
And the goodies! Ok, so in issue 64, i think, or 63, the X-Men are trying to keep this situation under control (basically some kids from Emma Frost's school, including Cyclop's brother Havok, Cannonball and Northstar, are trying to rescue Havok's girlfriend Lorna Dane, who was wrongfully imprisoned with Magneto and other baddie mutants). So... before the Frost group arrives, Piotr's playing with his hair in the background of one frame, and someone makes a comment that this wasn't the prom... And when Northstar and Havok get past the XMen after a fight, Northstar looks back at Piotr (longingly-- I swear, this isn't even up to interpretation. I'd post the scans... but that requires retrieving the discs they're on) and says to Havok something to the effect of "Well at least /someone/ will be getting some after this."
And! *fucking squeeing my heart and lungs out here in the middle of Waldenbooks, fercripessake* In this last issue, they show Piotr/Colossus on the phone.
He's talking to Northstar. Who just invited him to go to Homecoming with him.
And I start dancing around the store, getting weird looks from everyone except for my friends, who are used to (and also fall victim to) similar antics.
Ok, I've finished my babblefest. Time for bed.
