(the littlest birds sing the prettiest songs)
Blurb
But more important than any of these was the vast, accretive weight of small things, from planes which hadn't crashed to men and women who had come to the correct place at the perfect time and thus founded generations. He saw kisses exchanged in doorways and wallets returned and men who had come to a splitting of the way and chosen the right fork. He saw a thousand random meetings that weren't random, ten thousand right decisions, a hundred thousand right answers, a million acts of unacknowledged kindnesses. ...For every brick that landed on the ground instead of some little kid's head, for every tornado that missed the trailer park, for every missile that didn't fly, for every hand stayed from violence, there was the Tower.
[eight reasons I'm glad to be back in san francisco]
Being asked in earnestness by the people behind the counter at my coffee shop what I've been up to lately, and upon hearing that I'm attempting to find a yoga studio that fits me best, being given a free pass for a week's worth of yoga classes at the barista's studio.
Soy lattes with brown sugar.
Drinking the comics kool-aid with flatbear and isilrandir. I've seen Thor twice and X-Men First Class now. I have so much catching up to do.
All the drag queens and gay men at work demanding stories about my adventures in New Zealand and being re-adopted as one of the resident fag hags.
Being shown the BBC Sherlock miniseries by ribby and being able to turn around and shriek at revid, jou, and latenightarting about it until they consent to re-watching with me.
Going on dates with tiny tattooed tight-jeans guyliner-wearing dirty punk boys who surf and quote Milton, and getting drunk with them in crappy bars on Haight Street.
The San Francisco Giants. Particularly this beautiful thing, even if he is in a bit of a pitching slump right now.
Being able to shriek with rainjewel about everything from baseball to feminism to Assassin's Creed to Green Day to Alkaline Trio and also, butts.
bonus: This gorgeous acoustic cover of This Could Be Love from the upcoming Alkaline Trio album "Damnesia." Fuck, but I am excited to see them next month. (lol, the show they are headlining thursday night is sold out so I will drown my sorrows in wine and Sherlock BBC with jou and latenightarting and revid.)
ETA: putting on leupagus's Social Justice Tights here for a second and linking her most righteous and excellently-worded post, "To Anyone Annoyed By A Woman."
You know when it isn't earned? When you declare "Oh, God, she's so annoying!" when you watch a woman get interviewed for a dance competition, or you watch her on a reality show, or you watch her character on a TV show for five minutes. When the crime she commits is existing in a larger sphere than her own personal life. When the "annoying" part of her is that she talks too much when she's stressed, or she's sleeping with the main character or a hot actor, or when she's wearing a sexy outfit, or when she's earnestly clueless about anything from foreign policy to who was in The Who. When the performer/actress/reality star/singer/politician makes it clear that she wants attention, that she wants your attention, as if that's some kind of character defect. When she tells reporters that she's fucked five hundred guys, and she's proud of it; when she shows off her kids to national television, and she's proud of them; when she's better or worse or different than people expected her to be, and she's not ashamed in the slightest.
All of my Green Day friends are officially On Notice. Y'all, I'm in ENGLAND and I still am on top of this.
Five years ago today, "American Idiot" was released. I loved Green Day before AI, but it's not exaggerating even a tiny bit to acknowledge that that album changed my life, in more ways than I can count—not least because of all the wonderful friends I met and all the wonderful experiences I've had directly due to this band. Lately I try to keep the fandom geekiness reined in a bit, or under a filter, or constrained to IM amongst my GD friends, but I wanted to make a note of this.
In other news, England is expensive lovely, I'm seeing looking_spiffy and tasyfa tomorrow, I have yet to succumb to the travel ick, and jou and I got hit on by Australian boys tonight in the pub around the corner. More details to come soon (this weekend), hopefully.
HEY!!! Anybody who is planning on going to the Austin Green Day show, who wants floor tickets and didn't get em? I have a good girl-friend who has suddenly found herself with 2 extra floor tickets. Let me know and I will hook you up with her info.
So, this is the show I was at, the one I somehow wound up onstage for. You can totally see my stupid head and my stupid arm down front. Oh yeah, baby. Who rocks and rolls? Me and revid and indie_wonka, that's who. You can (sort of) see all of us if you know what you're lookin' for.
Might I add this is some of the best video footage I've seen of any of their shows ever. I nearly fell out of my chair just now watching it.
I have to get up stupid-early tomorrow (long story!) so I'm gonna go to bed, but I NEED to respond to comments and make some sort of update that doesn't consist of a drunk-post. G'night!

OH FUCK YOUUUU I'LL BE IN ENGLAND FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOUUUUUU AHHHHHHHHHHH
Edit now that I've regained my sanity. ASDFJASLDFJKA it figures. But oh crap, who's going?! We want pictures! Oh my god, all three of them playing together again, THANK YOU JESUS CHRIST. HOORAY!!!
Edit the second 'cause I was in the shower: Okay, seriously, guys... yes, it sucks that there aren't more shows yet, or the venues aren't bigger, or there isn't more certainty. And sure, bitch about the camera policy. But... COME ON.
Green Day wants to do tiny shows. They want small, fun venues, they want intimacy with the crowd, they want tightness and spontaneity and they want to AVOID the huge media circus that was the American Idiot tour at the end there. We SAW that with the Pinhead Gunpowder shows. Yeah, it sucks (and boy am I bummed that I'm gonna be out of town) but that's... I mean, it's not REALLY a surprise, is it?
Okay, goddammit, they could at least have advance ticket sales. I'm not even GOING and I'm biting my nails for you guys. *flails* DEB AND MARY YOU HAVE TO GO. ASHTON, YOU TOO!! AHHHH!!!
MS: The Network for sure, I love the Network. We would have to play to right, like us plus 5 bands?
MP: Yeah.
MS: Hmm, I love the Network, have you heard them?
MP: Yeah, great album.
MS: Hmm, who else The Network, Hot Water Music, can this be any band?
MP: Yeah, Misfits or whoever. Any bands you'd like to tour with.
MS: Hmm, well that's hard. If it were a dream tour I would not want to play because I just want to party and watch the show. I guess it would just be my favorite bands, Misfits, Damned, Clash, Ramones & the Network.
Because clearly The Network is up there with the likes of the Clash and the Ramones and the Misfits. AHAHAHAHAH!!!
*snip*
MP: What's one song you wish you had written?
MS: There's a song called "roshembaum" by the Network. It's like the best song ever written. That song is the reason I love the Network so much. I heard it and just though, fuck I wish I had written that. There are tons of songs like that, but I got that record and it sent chills down my back.
I'm pretty sure that's the transcriptionist fucking that right up, as I'm sure he meant "Roshambo." AHAHAHAH. He played that song when he was DJing during Heather's art show in Chicago last year. Along with the U2 & Green Day version of "The Saints Are Coming."
Matt Skiba, Dorky Fanboy Extraordinaire. ♥ And now I gotta go to bed... getting up early to go hiking before work. Have a good night! ♥
Happy 36th birthday, Billie Joe. I made a post last year that details some of the reasons I fucking adore you and your band so much, but I don't have much of a brain on your birthday this year, my dear. I know you'll never read this, but who cares? I wish you nothing but the best, and I hope you spent today with the people you love. I hope your friends bought you lots of drinks, and that you have hot sex with your beautiful wife tonight. I hope your two sons are healthy and happy and that you have everything you want out of life, because you fucking well deserve it. I used your birthday as an excuse to drink lots of red wine tonight, and if I don't end this post in a second here I'm going to get maudlin, but I'm damned excited to see you and your 2 best-known friends later this year (HINT HINT HINT!!!).
In case you missed the explosion on GDA/The Idiot Club/GDC last night, Green Day is maybe-probably-we're-pretty-sure masquerading as The Foxboro Hot Tubs on Myspace, apparently in order to get their kicks via 60s-esque Britrock. Their website is now up as well, and you can download the full 6-song EP for free there: go here.
Nothing quite puts the cap on your panic-inducing mound of stress as realizing, "Hoshit, I only have 10 weeks left before my big deadline!" except to remember that you in fact only have 9 weeks because you'll be spending 5 days in the Bay area with your frantic mother helping her look around for a house & do job interviews. That being said, it's time for a time-wasting post while I'm on my afternoon break—now with more pictures and youtube links!
