Star Trek fic rec list
In which I attempt to keep track of all the UTTERLY AMAZING fic I have read, as well as a great deal of art and other bits and pieces (like one totally awesome playlister who has been giving me musicgasms with her Star Trek playlists). (...DON'T JUDGE ME.) Work in progress, kids. I will be continuously adding to this as I read and get time to track down all my favorite things.
It's almost all K/S (I think there is literally one thing on this list that is not K/S—thanks, Vicky!), and it is by NO MEANS an exhaustive list, due to the fact that I have been mostly reading whatever
jou and latenightarting have linked me to. Anyway, it's an attempt to keep track of all my favorite stuff, for my own reference, but obviously if someone finds it useful then that's awesome. Whee! Note: Some of it is TOS and some of it is Reboot fic; I will note which is which.
First, the stuff I've already read myself, and can personally vouch for. More to be added as I read. Eventually I will have my queued-up list as well, but this is a solid start for now.
*** ST: Reboot You'll Get There in the End (It Just Takes Awhile) byseperis ST: Reboot. Complete, multi-chapter (4), K/S, Kirk is Smart, KirkEnterprise OTP, Kirk & Pon Farr, in-character Spock, Kirk & Spock & the Kobiyashi Maru test. Best line by Kirk referring to Pike's diary: "'Captain's Log, today I found my childhood hero's son beating up some Starfleet cadets in a bar. It was awesome! Do you think he'd like me more if I gave him a starship?'" This fic remains my favorite for best characterizations of the characters, and discussions of Things That Were Kinda Awkward In the Movie. Beautifully layered and excellently paced as well. Also, the sex is SCALDING. Very NC-17.

*** TOS The Prize by Ray Newton. NC-17, K/S. "On a Vulcan where Surak's Reforms never happened, the warrior Spock acquires a Human slave." ... And now I boomerang back with some SHAME. Despite the weird AU-ness of it, the characters are identifiably themselves (if that makes sense—their personalities are intact). Written in 1981, this fic is awesome for the sheer amount of sex in it, and the slow progression of their relationship. Also, green double-ridged Vulcan peen.
*** ST: Reboot Birthday Traditions bycorpus_invictus. NC-17, K/S, Drunk!Spock. "Spock tries to make Jim a birthday cake. A chocolate one. Things go downhill from there... and then uphill." This fic is so cute and sexy I could barely stand it; it's perfect to read when you need a pick-me-up. Also, Drunk!Spock is totally hot. I can't blame Jim for sexing him up.
*** TOS/Reboot/Omfg Quench the Flames byblcwriter TOS!Spock/Nu?!Kirk. NC-17. This is actually the very first Star Trek fic I read, and it completely broke me AND blew my mind. Underage and accordingly dubcon, dark and squicky as hell, cleaned up and expanded from the original post. Major character deaths. TOS Spock gets sick of watching his friends suffer and die, and decides to take matters into his own hands. I absolutely adore this fic, I don't care what that says about me. It basically got me into this fandom.
*** ST: Reboot Communication Series byscreamlet. Complete, multi-chapter, Spock/Uhura, Kirk/Spock, Kirk is Obnoxious in a Good Way, shoreleave, full cast, in which Kirk figures out how to set up shore leave, monopolizes Spock's time and gets kidnapped a little. Very enjoyable and funny.
*** ST: Reboot Five Times James Kirk Showed Someone Exactly How Intelligent He Is And One Time He Can't Believe He Was So Dumb by anonymous. Anyone want to claim? ST Kink Meme, fucking hilarious and cute. PG-13, K/S, short, and sweet, like eating a single cookie.
*** TOS Rumor Has It by Dana Austin Marsh. K/S, fluff, NC-17, spot-on characterizations of all of the original crew. Everyone thinks Kirk and Spock are doing it, Fake Relationship, (Except Not). Infatuated Spock, clueless Kirk. So epically adorable and hilarious. First TOS-centered fic I read, and fell in love with.
*** ST: Reboot No-Win Scenario bysingingintime. PG-13, K/S, Kat Bawls Like a Small Child. Kirk is finally facing his no-win scenario, and decides to throw caution to the wind because he has nothing left to lose. The results are breathtaking. One of the best and most shattering kissing scenes I've ever read. Heart-wrenching, but ends well, I promise. Here's your hanky, I'll wait.
*** ST: Reboot Compatibility Test byrhaegal. NC-17, S/U, K/S, Kirk is charming, Spock is written compelling as being, you know, an alien, Spock learns about human relationships, Kirk realizes that his First Officer is hot. Also, one of the greatest answers to "what are Vulcan genitals like?" questions I've ever read in fic. And the sex is totally hot and well-written.
*** TOS Gemini Setting by Lyrastar. NC-17, K/S. Holy shit, established relationship fic with smut AND plot! The plot is particularly good, the characterizations are perfect and hit every note, the pacing and writing are compelling, the set-up is incredibly intricate and the ending left me whimpering. So, so good. Manages to be utterly heartbreaking and AWESOME all at the same time. This isjou's favorite fic.
*** ST: Reboot We'll Be In Our Hidden Place bydownjune. NC-17, K/S. Kirk is (temporarily) deaf and finds it tough to cope with; Spock helps him. Mind-porn, short and sweet, compellingly-written look at how Kirk's brain works in strange situations.
*** TOS Debt of Honor by Brianna Falken. K/S, NC-17, warnings for some dub-con right near the beginning but I PROMISE it's not that bad and it absolutely serves the purpose of the story. Slight AU in that Surak's Reforms were instituted, but the Vulcans never joined the Federation and are on questionable terms with the humans. This fic is absolutely amazing, and one I've read twice already because it's so good. The characterizations are phenomenal, the slow build-up of the relationship is so satisfying, and the subtle way that the plot builds and the surprising-yet-awesome culmination are just SO WONDERFUL. Maybe slightly cheesy at times, but OH MY GOD, I LOVE IT.
*** ST: Reboot Genesis2 bywaldorph. NC-17, K/S. Kirk is kidnapped by a sentient planet and suffers amnesia; Spock rescues him. 2nd person POV and shockingly well-written. I love the exploration and the ins and outs of Kirk's mind, and I normally don't care for 2nd person but Waldorph pulls it off really well. Highly recommended.
*** ST: Reboot More Than Just A Pretty Face (or 5 Superior Officers That Didn't Lay Kirk and One Crew Member That Did) by
notboldy50295. R, K/S. 2-parter, short and sweet, UST, some angst, great resolution.
*** ST: Reboot The Ending Has Not Yet Been Written bycorpus_invictus. NC-17, Kirk/Spock, warnings for major character death and serious AAAAANGST. It's the end of the Enterprise's 5-year mission, and everyone is being reassigned... but not all the loose ends have quite been tied up. Also, pon farr is tender & yet overwhelming instead of crazy-violent. This fic is heart-breaking but somehow also very satisfying. Complete multi-chapter.
*** ST: Reboot A Beautiful(ly Illogical) Mind (√π233/hy7 series) bywaldorph. Also known as the "Waldorph math series." NC-17, K/S, Amanda/Sarek, complete, multi-chaptered, Kirk is Smart, Kirk♥Enterprise OTP, full cast, AU, Kirk is a genius bartender who becomes Spock's Academy project. HIGHLY recommended; this series makes me happy.
*** ST: Reboot Symptomatic bycorpus_invictus. NC-17, fluff, K/S. Spock is sick as fuck-all and Kirk takes care of him. Very very cute. I love the descriptions of Spock's illness (especially his eyes) and how put-out he is by being ill, and Kirk's affection for him. Established relationship ftw!
*** ST: Reboot Distraction byawarrington. NC-17, Kirk/Spock, Kirk catches Spock wanking in the shower and then can't stop thinking about it. This fic manages to be side-splittingly hilarious (especially being inside Kirk's pervy mind) but also panty-melting hot. The frantic up-against-the-wallsex is awesome, and Kirk's mental asides ("jade joystick," HUR HUR HUR) are just great.
*** ST: Reboot/TOS When I Was Invincible byrobanybody. Gen. Copy and paste the description at the top: "Just for the record: this is all superjoydrop's fault because she tells me things like "wouldn't it be awesome if nu!Kirk time-traveled through a singularity and ended up in young Spock Prime's time? There would be much eyebrow-raising and nerve pinching!" and I spend two days writing it in my head, to the detriment of my productivity at work, and then last night, I spent six hours at the computer actually writing it out because I am weak and she is a wretched enabler." Seriously funny.
*** ST: Reboot/pure crack Not in LA anymore, ZQ bytrekkinthestars. NC-17, 3-part complete fic, Zachary Quinto/McCoy, eventual Spock/McCoy, Kirk Being Amused. ZQ somehow winds up aboard the Enterprise and consequently weirds everyone out with how much he looks like Spock. Very cute and funny, a quick and entertaining read. Thanks to mackem for the heads-up.
*** ST: Reboot Winter Sun byrhaegal. NC-17, K/S. Shore leave happens to coincide with Christmas. Jim convinces Spock to join him for some traditional Terran festivities, and learns an unexpected lesson in Vulcan customs. Unrepentant fluff, winter clichés, some rather hilarious UST (Spock OWNS Jim during a snowball fight), and a totally sexy accompanying artwork at the link by latenightarting. Squee!
*** ST: Reboot Young Wine, Old Feeling bykianspo. NC-17, K/S, massive amounts of holiday-flavored fluff, but well-written and sexy. The Bones/Spock antagonism is particularly delicious, and reminiscent of their TOS counterparts, which I appreciate. This one and the one I linked above are my favorites out of the KS Advent fics I've read so far.
*** ST: Reboot A Gilded Hook byeldritchhorrors. NC-17, dark and squicky as hell, Kirk/Spock, Kirk/Spock Prime. Don't read this if you don't like dark-as-fuck fics. I'll share the twist because it's what got me into wanting to read it: Spock Prime is actually Mirrorverse Spock Prime, but no one realizes it till it's almost? too late. Oh my god, this fic blew my mind. It's soooooo good, complex and well-paced and keeps you hanging on the edge of your seat, with sexy, moving scenes of intimacy. Might have had me screaming and pounding on the desk when I read it, ahem.
