It has been shown analytically [1],[2] that significant performance improvements as compared to e... more It has been shown analytically [1],[2] that significant performance improvements as compared to existing technologies (e.g., IEEE 802.11) can be achieved in random access wireless networks. In [3] we proposed a fully distributed channel access paradigm based on the opportunistic communication principal called the Channel MAC paradigm suitable for distributed wireless networks such as ad hoc networks. In this paper, we analytically derive the throughput of the Channel MAC. It provides a throughput-limit on the channel-based MAC mechanism in shared multiple access environments without collisions or capturing effects. Both simulation and analytical results reveal possible performance improvement over existing techniques.

Distributed opportunistic communication protocol for wireless multihop networks

Despite significant research effort, the performance of distributed medium access control methods... more Despite significant research effort, the performance of distributed medium access control methods has failed to meet theoretical expectations. Previously, we have proposed the concept for a fully-distributed, but non-optimum opportunistic medium access control called Channel MAC. In this paper, we present the Channel MAC protocol operations addressing the issues of information exchange between nodes, predicting transmission intervals and selecting transmission thresholds to achieve fairness. Although the proposed prediction scheme based on mean channel fading is simple to implement, it is imperfect leading to some performance losses. Event based simulation tool NS2 is used to analyse the performance of Channel MAC in a number of network scenarios. We analyse the performance of the proposed protocol using the performance metric; throughput, fairness and delay. The simulation results show throughput performance improvement of up to 30% with Channel MAC over IEEE 802.11 in certain multihop scenarios. Generally, the proposed protocol outperforms 802.11 in all analysed network scenarios. We also show that the severe resource starvation problem (unfairness) of IEEE 802.11 in some network scenarios is reduced by the Channel MAC mechanism.

This paper proposes a protocol named "Channel MAC" performing a fully distributed medium access control based on opportunistic communication principles. In this protocol, nodes access the channel when the channel quality increases beyond a threshold, while neighbouring nodes are deemed to be silent. Once a node starts transmitting, it will keep transmitting until the channel becomes "bad." We derive an analytical throughput limit for Channel MAC in a shared multiple access environment. Furthermore, three performance metrics of Channel MAC-throughput, fairness, and delay-are analysed in single hop and multihop scenarios using NS2 simulations. The simulation results show throughput performance improvement of up to 130% with Channel MAC over IEEE 802.11. We also show that the severe resource starvation problem (unfairness) of IEEE 802.11 in some network scenarios is reduced by the Channel MAC mechanism.

It has been shown theoretically [1],[2] that significant performance improvements as compared to 802.11 can be achieved in random access wireless networks. In this paper we propose a new paradigm of medium access control, improving the performance of wireless ad hoc networks. Simulation results obtained show a significant improvement of throughput compared to that of an 802.11 system.
