Explaining the world in which I live is my profession and a passion. I am a scientist due to my training and the professional choices I made in the course of my career.

My discipline is interdisciplinarity. It enables me to understand that the naturalisation of the meaning of phenomena is complementary to the culturalization of nature. That is to say, we are used to the Manichaeism of the “two cultures”. On one hand, nature, objectivity, causal explanation, technique (exact sciences); on the other hand, culture, auto reflexion, comprehension, seizing an existentially proven meaning (human sciences).

René Thom, Fields’ mathematics medal award of 1958, explains in his book of 1993 "Prédire n'est pas expliquer": to predict (in terms of quantitive models) is not to explain (qualitatively).

Thom was the creator of the catastrophe's theory that was later rewritten under the semiotic perspective of Per Aage Brandt, enabling the greatest scientific transfiguration of our century, the “Realist Turn”. Thom and Brandt put together the bases of the explanatory construction that I am building since 1991. According to this methodological vision, the individual lives simultaneously in three worlds: a natural world, a socio-cultural world and a more intentional intimate world (communication in its literal meaning) consisting of empathy and inter-human contacts; he lives in the present, the past and the future.

My present work articulates the "catastrophe's theory semiotics" with the analysis of objects such as the notion of border and the visual representations of the conspiracy theories.

The Dynamics of Urban Form With a View of Sixteenth Century Lisbon 1 by Isabel Marcos "The essent... more The Dynamics of Urban Form With a View of Sixteenth Century Lisbon 1 by Isabel Marcos "The essential is thus not to distinguish the 'real' from the 'represented', the historical from the mythical, the fact from the legend, nor to reduce the one to the other or the other to the one, these being simple exercises, the essential is to see the generation of differentiated spaces. The essential is to see that there is not only one space whether real or represented (a particular conception), but any number of spaces, imbricated ones on the others, inextricably. This is difficult to imagine, at present: the multiplicity of spaces" 2 (Michel Serres). A MONG THE MANY DIFFICULT CHALLENGES presented by reflection upon the spaces of our architectural conceptions is the search for the mechanisms underlying the generating mecanisms of the urban form, the city as such, as a spatial unfolding. Michel Serres proposes perspectives on how space is generated from a multiplicity of differentiated spaces, interrelated somehow through threads of relations:"*^ multiplicity of spaces'. He also reminds us of all the difficulties with which this way of thinking confronts us.

L’un des plus anciens leviers du Branding Territorial réside dans les Brand Architectes, plus communément appelés Star Architectes. Il semblerait que l’identité de leur marque, représentée par un nom propre (le sien), comme Jean Nouvel, Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, entre autres, se confonde avec les valeurs qu’ils construisent dans leurs oeuvres. On voit qu’en général, le Brand Architecte organise sa marque autour d’un manifeste, ou, plusieurs manifestes qui sonnent le plus souvent comme une révolution et soulignent les valeurs qui le caractérisent, comme l’élément phare de la stratégie de chaque projet. The primitive dyke of the boulevard de l'hôpital emphasizes the presence of a border. This border... more The primitive dyke of the boulevard de l'hôpital emphasizes the presence of a border. This border, on the one hand, encloses the city of Paris at the administrative level while, on the other hand, separates the city from the women's prison of Salpêtrière (1656); (2) The dyke of the fence of grant of the general farmers forbidding any construction beyond this limit in 1786. The Salpêtrière becomes the place of recovery for those rejected by the city (beggars, prostitutes, the foolish, etc.). This place is therefore a "repulsive attractor" in relation to the city from which is separated by a barrier, establishing the impossibility of living inside at the risk of being rejected (see Fig. 1); (3) The dike is strengthened by the institutionalization of the psychiatric hospital in the 19th century (see Fig. 2). The Salpêtrière is already for centuries a "repulsive attractor" located at "good distance" from the city and forbidden to the urban populations establishment. Psychogenesis-Psychogenetic Gradient (Pitié) Pitié is a quite attractive, medium height white skin blue-eyed 38-year-old woman, with an elegant silhouette and a seductive gait, a well-succeeded environmental systems engineer with a Stanford University post-graduation. She is unhappily married to Martin, a neurologist thirteen years her elder, and has a fourteen year-old teenager son, Lucien, she cherishes a lot. She comes from a middle-class highly educated family, the elder of three sisters admired and cherished by her idealised father, a renowned Physicist and former Physics Professor at the University. The relationship with her mother is softly ambivalent with a feeble homosexual identification and superficial feminine complicity. She feels that the mother stayed too much behind her father. On the contrary she shared with the father the interest for natural sciences, geology, wildlife and science fiction and would go on long walks in the countryside, chatting and discovering plants, rocks, animals, streams of water, while the sisters would stay at home with their mother, playing and watching TV. When she was a 10-year-old pre-pubertal girl she suffered a long-time no memorisable traumatic event. Her intelligent and seductive maternal uncle, Joseph, she praised a lot at the time, has sexually abused her in a playful intrusive manner.

O desenvolvimento da técnica permitiu uma proposta de democratização onde o espaço urbano e a habitação para todos detinham um papel determinante. Neste contexto, a Exposição Universal de 1900 é considerada pela historiografia como sendo um evento fundamental da divulgação das obras de arte e dos produtos industriais e agrícolas. A perspetiva da análise é a da semiótica morfodinâmica, sendo o nosso objeto de estudo o desenvolvimento da mundialização e o seu impacto nos fenómenos urbanos. Esta reflexão iniciou-se com o estudo das quatro mundializações: terrestre, marítima, aérea e virtual. No decorrer do presente artigo, mostraremos, no espaço da cúspide, de que forma a cidade na sua dimensão local (Fl – Forças locais) e simultaneamente global (Fg – Forças globais) (Cf. Paolo Fabbri et Manar Hammad. L'espace analyse est celui d'un trajet de pelerinage reliant Lisbonne au couvent franciscain de Sao Jose de Ribamar situe a l'embouchure du Tage. L'analyse semiotique doit mettre au point ses outils qui puissent rendre compte de l'organisation des lieux et des deplacements, de l'interaction des espaces et des sujets, des transformations du sujet au cours de son deplacement et des transformations des lieux dans le temps. This article intends to be the first of a series, in an attempt to show the scope of a wider ques... more This article intends to be the first of a series, in an attempt to show the scope of a wider question, which is “what is Territorial Branding?” and why this issue is important for us architects. One of the oldest levers of “Territorial Branding” is the “Brand Architects”, more commonly called “Star Architects”. It would seem that the identity of their brand, represented by a proper noun (their own), like Jean Nouvel, Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, among others, is confused with the “values they are building up”. In general, we see that the Brand-Architect (1) organizes his/her “brand” around one manifesto, or several manifesti, which most times sound like a revolution and underline the values that characterize it, like the leading element of the strategy for each project. O objecto desta análise é a minha sala de aula teórica / prática de arquitectura na ESBAL (Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa) em 1985. Aqui os métodos da semiótica do espaço permitem-nos aceder ao conhecimento e ao funcionamento deste espaço. A perspetiva da análise é a da semiótica morfodinâmica, sendo o nosso objeto de estudo o desenvolvimento da mundialização e o seu impacto nos fenómenos urbanos. Esta reflexão iniciou-se com o estudo das quatro mundializações: terrestre, marítima, aérea e virtual. No decorrer do presente artigo, mostraremos, no espaço da cúspide, de que forma a cidade na sua dimensão local (Fl – Forças locais) e simultaneamente global (Fg – Forças globais) (Cf. Paolo Fabbri et Manar Hammad. L'espace analyse est celui d'un trajet de pelerinage reliant Lisbonne au couvent franciscain de Sao Jose de Ribamar situe a l'embouchure du Tage. L'analyse semiotique doit mettre au point ses outils qui puissent rendre compte de l'organisation des lieux et des deplacements, de l'interaction des espaces et des sujets, des transformations du sujet au cours de son deplacement et des transformations des lieux dans le temps. One of the oldest levers of “Territorial Branding” is the “Brand Architects”, more commonly called “Star Architects”. It would seem that the identity of their brand, represented by a proper noun (their own), like Jean Nouvel, Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, among others, is confused with the “values they are building up”. L’interrogation au foyer du projet est la suivante : quelles sont les questions que Thom nous a transmises, et qu’il nous a induit à soulever dans nos domaines ? La rencontre de Thom, ou de sa pensée, ne laisse pas indifférent, nous semble-t-il. A quelles questions, en terme de science fondamentale, Thom nous a t-il confronté dans nos domaines respectifs ? Qu’est-ce que ses découvertes venaient remettre en question ou critiquer comme allant de soi dans nos disciplines ? Cette première année de séminaire a pour but d’être une année d’introduction, afin de délimiter plus précisément quels sont les concepts clés et moteurs d’une interdisciplinarité depuis l’axe morphologique. Pouvons-nous discerner des critères, voir une axiomatique, qui nous conduisent à définir les particularités d’une pensée morphologique ?

· présenter René Thom à travers le regard de ses interlocuteurs (directs ou non),
· introduire sa pensée pour les personnes qui ne le connaîtraient pas,
· saisir ce qui, chez lui, a fait date,
· exposer les questions que Thom a transmises, et qu’il a induit à soulever dans nos domaines: la rencontre de Thom, ou de sa pensée, ne laisse pas indifférent, nous semble-t-il. A quelles questions, en termes de science fondamentale, Thom nous a t-il confronté dans nos domaines respectifs ? Qu’est-ce que ses découvertes venaient remettre en question ou critiquer comme allant de soi dans nos disciplines ?
· Ainsi, commencer à mieux discerner ce qu’est la pensée morphologique, comment elle se distingue et ce qu’elle apporte de nouveau pour l’interdisciplinarité, par rapport aux positions non morphologiques.

Le séminaire mensuel aura lieu de novembre 2017 à juillet 2018, le vendredi une fois par mois de 16h à 19h. Description: Il s’agit d’organiser un espace de réflexion (colloque | séminaire mensuel) en établissant une culture interdisciplinaire à partir de l’œuvre de René Thom. L’interrogation au foyer du projet est la suivante : quelles sont les questions que Thom nous a transmises, et qu’il nous a induit à soulever dans nos domaines ? La rencontre de Thom, ou de sa pensée, ne laisse pas indifférent, nous semble-t-il. A quelles questions, en terme de science fondamentale, Thom nous a t-il confronté dans nos domaines respectifs ? Qu’est-ce que ses découvertes venaient remettre en question ou critiquer comme allant de soi dans nos disciplines ? Cette première année de séminaire a pour but d’être une année d’introduction, afin de délimiter plus précisément quels sont les concepts clés et moteurs d’une interdisciplinarité depuis l’axe morphologique. Pouvons-nous discerner des critères, voir une axiomatique, qui nous conduisent à définir les particularités d’une pensée morphologique ?

Le séminaire mensuel se déroulera sur Paris, à l'ISHP, Institut des Sciences et des Humanités de Paris, rattaché à l'Université Paris 7 - Diderot Salle 888C – Bâtiment des Grands Moulins de Paris, 8eétage (à droite en sortant de l’ascenseur).

Le congrès aura lieu lui aussi à l’ISHP, en octobre 2018, du jeudi au samedi, les 4, 5, et 6 octobre 2018. La salle reste à déterminer. Un appel viendra sous peu.

Il s’agit d’organiser un espace de réflexion (colloque | séminaire mensuel) en établissant une culture interdisciplinaire à partir de l’œuvre de René Thom. Pour cela, il s’agit de :
• Repérer les influences plus au moins proches de l’impact de la Théorie des catastrophes ;
• Créer un espace interdisciplinaire de dialogue entre les disciples de Thom et tout chercheur intéressé par la démarche scientifique thomienne ;
• Réunir un ensemble de publications dispersées parmi les diverses spécialités sur une plateforme pour rendre évidente cette richesse ;
• Percevoir quelles peuvent être les suites engendrées par ces évènements, afin d’évaluer l’existence d’intérêts suffisants et de moyens nécessaires de la part de la communauté scientifique, pour la mise en place d’une Association autour de l’œuvre de René Thom.

Au moyen d’une culture collaborative, le projet dans son ambition pourrait s’ouvrir sur l’horizon de recherche suivante : la pensée de Thom permet-elle l’interdisciplinarité ?

The goal is to organize a space of reflection (conference | monthly seminar) by establishing an interdisciplinarity culture from the work of René Thom. For this, it is a question of:
• Identifying the more or less heavy influences from the impact of Catastrophe theory;
• Creating an interdisciplinarity space of dialogue between the followers of Thom and any researcher interested by the Thomian scientific approach;
• Reuniting a set of dispersed publications among the various specialties on a platform in order to render evident this wealth of information;
• Perceiving what could be the engendered consequences/results of these events, in order to evaluate the existence of sufficient interests and necessary means on the part of the scientific community, for the implementation of an Association centered on the work of René Thom.

Through a collaborative culture, the project in its ambition could be opened up to the following research horizon: does Thom's though allow for interdisciplinarity?

Research in design is growing very fast thanks to the new tools used by
architects, planners and professionals involved in building social life. In
education, architectural and urban design, as well as in social planning
participation, PHD dissertations and research projects are day by day more
needed.
In the Venice Biennale 2016 two architects from the research grup GIRAS were elected to represent Catalonia and Chile. This year Biennale was dedicated to the social meaning of architecture and planning. We are proud of Jelena Prokopljevic from Barcelona and Jose Luis Uribe from Chile, for this important nomination and we support their work.

1. What are the best theories and practices on university architectural education for architects and for all professions involved? Case Studies with a clear analysis of purposes and outputs are needed.

2. We welcome Studies using urban quality indicators for planning places for children and also architectural children education studies.

3. Proposals about new models for learning throughout human interaction are welcomed. Not only related to architectural and urban design, but also about all kind of scientific artistic or political learning, such as music, dancing, etc. always related to space and time concepts as the chronotropes by M. Bakhtin.

4. The production of Knowledge on professional design studies is the key topic here. How to analyze the social interdisciplinary and cognitive origin of research by design?

5. From design to construction the path is long and often knowledge changes or disappears. The role of technologies is key at this point, since they can transform the aesthetics and the functionality of buildings.

6. Computer Design is a challenge for doing innovative research framed by new design theories and practices. However the interaction between brains and machine cannot be fully described without ignoring either one or the other. The dialogical feed‐back generated by research can then be made explicit.

7. We welcome Social participation and simulation of research on planning, where knowledge is produced inductively without a priori rules. Special emphasis should be made on the different actors of the planning process, with their ideals, expertise and responsibilities.

8. There are a lot of studios upon environmental impact theories and practices (Post‐occupancy). The analysis on the environmental impact on health and behavior of users is very important.

9. Architectural and Urban Heritage is no longer a secondary field for research. The best architectural and urban designs are now growing in consolidated historical settings, where ideas are converted in objects. Consider the works by P. Zumthor, R. Piano or Wang Shu. We
welcome research about Historical Urban Forms transformations.

Un signe d’ouverture dialogue autour de l’oeuvre d’Umberto Eco

Rares sont les oeuvres et les personnalités à ce point marquées par l'ouverture : Tour à tour (et... more Rares sont les oeuvres et les personnalités à ce point marquées par l'ouverture : Tour à tour (et toujours un peu tout à la fois) médiéviste, historien de l'oeuvre, sémioticien, linguiste et romancier, le savoir encyclopédique d'Eco et sa capacité, mille fois démontrée, à passer allègrement d'un domaine à l'autre aura sensiblement frappé l'esprit de ses comporains. Aujourd'hui, du fait de cette ouverture et contrairement à ce qu'il est traditionnel d'attendre de ces affaires là, son héritage intellectuel s'offre non pas comme une occasion de discorde mais bien au contraire, nous invite à un travail commun, décloisonné, entre les diverses disciplines qui ont, chacune à un certain point, pu profiter de ses lumières. En mettant l'accent de cette journée sur la question du Signe, c'est notamment à la reprise d'un échange entre linguistes et psychanalystes que l'on se trouve conviés, perpétuant en cela le dialogue qu'ont entretenu (sans vraiment le documenter) le jeune Eco et le « dernier » Lacan. Une relation que le « gentil italien »1 (pour reprendre les termes de l'analyste) qualifiait sans reserve d' « histoire d'amour », soit une formule qui laisse peu de doute sur l'évidence du transfert. Enfants cachés (à eux même) de cette « aventure adultérine »2 (les mots sont d'Eco), nous profiterons donc de cette réunion (ouverte à tous) pour recomposer la fraternité qui, depuis son origine freudienne, lie la psychanalyse à ses soeurs des sciences humaines et sociales.
