Nesse âmbito, analisámos as suas biografias políticas, que incluem, por vezes, ligações formais e informais, passadas e presentes a partidos políticos. Temos como objetivo deste artigo detalhar os processos de ligação e afastamento destas organizações, mas também de complementaridade com as suas formas de ativismo. Percebemos nos seus discursos a relevância dos partidos nos seus processos de socialização política, no âmbito familiar e dos pares, influenciando de forma decisiva a trajetória ativista atual. Young activists and political parties: convergences and divergences Abstract This article results from a qualitative research project (2019-22) around civic and activist intervention practices of young people. In this context, we analyzed their political biographies, which include, in some cases, formal and informal links, past and present, to political parties. The objective of this article is to detail the processes of connection and departure from these organizations, but also of complementarity with their forms of activism. We perceive in their discourses the relevance of parties in their processes of political socialization, in the family and peer context, decisively influencing their current activist trajectory.

The authors collected here address youth street cultures in different cities from the Ibero-Ameri... more The authors collected here address youth street cultures in different cities from the Ibero-American world, bringing together contributions on Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Portugal, Spain, and beyond. This overseas approach bridging the European and American contexts is justified by the range of (complex) social, cultural and economic relationships that have shaped this transnational geographical space since the beginning of the colonial period. The chapters collected here focus on three key concepts—creativity, resistance and transgression—that form a threefold dispositive to locally and globally confront, contest and even fight against the hegemonic, punitive and oppressive powers (re)produced by (white, male) dominant classes of the city. The book ensures a high diversity of geographical and social/cultural research contexts by focusing on one, two or multiple spatial contexts (the public space, the street, the city) and, at the same time, by emphasizing the different economic, social, cultural, symbolic specificities of youth cultures (including gender, sexuality and race) in their particular urban contexts.

A arte urbana corresponde a um movimento artístico que não sendo propriamente novo tem tido uma c... more A arte urbana corresponde a um movimento artístico que não sendo propriamente novo tem tido uma crescente visibilidade desde o início do milénio. A arte urbana converteu-se gradualmente num elemento familiar, marcando a paisagem da cidade contemporânea. Esta está presente em muros, fachadas, postes, calçadas, mobiliário urbano ou transportes, adaptando-se ao meio envolvente. Corresponde a uma grande família de técnicas e expressões plásticas. Este fenómeno, que provém de uma linhagem antiga de manifestações pictóricas presentes no espaço público urbano merece, decididamente, a atenção da academia. E, na verdade, tem despertado a atenção de investigadores de áreas científicas muitos diversas. A arte urbana tem sido debatida a partir do olhar da arquitectura, da geografia, dos estudos urbanos, da história da arte, da sociologia, da antropologia, entre outras disciplinas.
Um dos objectivos principais deste livro é o de oferecer uma introdução a esta temática. Os autores sugerem um debate em torno de conceitos e abordagens, mas também fazem uma revisão dos mais significativos projectos artísticos surgidos em Portugal ao longo de mais de uma década, focando-se principalmente na cidade de Lisboa. Discussions of the recent austerity measures in Southern Europe as a response to the sovereign de... more Discussions of the recent austerity measures in Southern Europe as a response to the sovereign debt crisis have been usually framed in terms of their economic impact. However, the general impoverishment of these countries has induced other massive social and political changes, a fact which is ignored in the literature. This volume seeks to fill this gap and break ground by analyzing these trends in the Portuguese context. These changes include direct democracy experiments, the growing influence of social movements (the massive March 2011 demonstrations were a direct inspiration for the creation of the Indignado movement in Spain, attesting the contagion effect), solidarity economy and the major political change in the country's 42 years of democratic rule: an alliance of the left parties, unthinkable before the crisis, and which is reframing relations with the European Union. This volume offers a first approach to the massive political, social and cultural transformations taking place in the country that make Portugal, in certain aspects, a lab for innovative practices (e.g. participatory budgets and the alliance of the left parties) that may be used elsewhere as alternatives to current understandings of economic and political orthodoxy

Popular and Visual Culture: Design, Circulation and Consumption is a transnational project that f... more Popular and Visual Culture: Design, Circulation and Consumption is a transnational project that fosters a dialogue with multiple origins, both in geographical and academic terms. From the onset, this book questions the concepts of visual and popular culture, terms which are currently applied both to describe scientific fields, as operative concepts in theoretical discourse, and to characterize specific cultural contexts. The book’s analysis and categorization of visual and popular culture pursues discourses and practices which mark different historical eras and shape social orders. Because popular iconic and written productions are the outcome of a network of political, economic, ideological and social circumstances that are often hardly detectable and too taken for granted to be critically recognized, even by those who draw, paint or write (and live) under their influence. That is why visual figurations of popular culture should be studied as the support of a deeply motivated symbolic discourse on the values shared by a community. This book deals, in a way or another, with how popular and visual artefacts and sceneries are socially built, preserved and/or contested. The volume brings together, not only different disciplinary perspectives, but also diverse empirical phenomena, while approaching the wide subject of visuality and popular culture.

Nesta paisagem urbana descobrimos a publicidade, a propaganda política, a videovigilância ou arte pública oficial, tal como nos surpreendemos continuamente pelo poder disruptivo de gramáticas subversivas representadas pelo graffiti, pela street art ou por determinados estilos juvenis espectaculares. A cultura visual urbana constitui, por isso, um agregado complexo de dispositivos erigidos e mantidos por diferentes agentes sociais. Exige-se, por isso, um olhar mais denso, analiticamente mais consistente, à forma como socialmente é construído este campo do visível. Este é o principal objectivo desta obra. A literatura em torno da articulação entre juventude e política oscila frequentemente entre visões pessimistas, que apontam para a pouca participação e desinteresse demonstrados pelos jovens ou, pelo contrário, visões mais otimistas, que destacam o vigor de formas de participação mais difusas e extrainstitucionais. Na verdade, pelo facto de estarmos perante uma categoria socioetária vasta e heterogénea, marcada por condições socioculturais muito distintas, certamente que ambas as visões retratam realidades juvenis. Não são, por isso, perspetivas absolutamente antagónicas. Neste artigo, procuramos debater as questões da articulação entre juventude e política a partir de uma conceção do jovem enquanto sujeito político, marcado por uma condição de liminaridade (e subalternidade). palavras-chave: juventude, política, agência, liminaridade. Youth as a political subject: liminality and political agency. The literature on the articulation between youth and politics frequently oscillates between pessimistic visions, which point to the little participation and disinterest shown by young people or, on the contrary, by more optimistic visions, which highlight the vigor of more diffuse and extra-institutional forms of participation. In fact, since we are dealing with a vast and heterogeneous age category, marked by very distinct sociocultural conditions, both visions certainly portray juvenile realities. They are not, therefore, absolutely antagonistic perspectives. In this article we seek to discuss the issues of the articulation between youth and politics from a conception of youth as a political subject, marked by a condition of liminality (and subalternity).

This article discusses young people's uses of the Internet and digital platforms as a central res... more This article discusses young people's uses of the Internet and digital platforms as a central resource for their civic intervention in the production and dissemination of specific content linked to artistic practices. We set out to find what repercussions digital technologies have in this specific field of "artivism." We argue that digital media not only presents itself as a public space for intervention and debate but also offers a field for creative experimentation and for the production and circulation of aesthetic content. To this end, we analyze recent empirical data collected as part of a research project on young activists in Portugal, aiming at the articulation between creative practices, activism, and civic intervention. Following a qualitative research frame, about 50 young people mobilized around different causes were interviewed. In our analysis, we highlight 3 main functions that stand out in the interviews: (a) communicational functions, (b) creative and artistic functions, and (c) identity and emotional functions.

O conceito de 'culturas juvenis' refere-se à maneira como, coletivamente, os jovens expressam suas práticas e experiências sociais por meio da (re)produção de estilos de vida diferenciados, especialmente no campo do tempo livre e nos espaços intersticiais da vida institucional. Podemos olhar para as culturas juvenis a partir de duas perspectivas: a das condições sociais (geração, gênero, classe, etnia e identidades territoriais) e a das imagens culturais, entendidas como o conjunto de atributos ideológicos e simbólicos (tendências, música, linguagem e práticas culturais) atribuídas aos jovens ou que eles mesmos tenham apropriado.
O espaço púbico urbano, nomeadamente ‘a rua’, desempenha um papel fundamental na (re)produção de culturas juvenis. ‘A rua’ é um espaço de sociabilidade e de criatividade, utilizado como um palco para uma série de práticas que se desenrolam fora da alçada das instituições e do olhar dos adultos. Daí que, em muitas situações, este seja um espaço de autonomia que admite a criação de regras particulares, à margem dos normativos dominantes. Mas a rua também tem servido como cenário para a construção de práticas e identidades culturais singulares, que diferenciam grupos ou comunidades de jovens. Neste painel aceitamos propostas que: (a) procurem debater do ponto vista teórico as questões políticas, estéticas, culturais, sociais e simbólicas envolvidas nestas matérias; ou (b) apresentem resultados de pesquisas empíricas que tragam avanços a esta discussão.

Verbal and visual discourse work as political resources that are used by a number of social actors to construct their narratives. They may be used as mechanisms of power, of domination and of conditioning of imagination and behaviour, but may as well help to foster strategies of resistance and practices which establish spaces of contestation and alternative imaginations. We are inviting researchers interested in visual practices and the construction of imaginative spaces to submit works that reflect on the politics of visuality within spaces of ideological conflict. We are particularly interested in original works that engage in the academic debate on how and to what ends different social actors (researchers, visual artists, activists, etc.) seek to construct alternative ways of seeing and knowing, and anatomize how these actors employ tropes of visual language and images within narratives that seek to alter the way the public perceives their environment, the Other and themselves.
We welcome articles, (audio)visual essays, etc. (see the journal’s Section Policies) that: (1) examine practices of construction of visual narratives that promote the subordination to dominant social, political and cultural models; (2) examine those practices which create spaces of contestation and alternative imaginations.
