This Letter presents a search for tb resonances in 1.04 fb −1 of LHC proton-proton collision data... more This Letter presents a search for tb resonances in 1.04 fb −1 of LHC proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Events with a lepton, missing transverse momentum, and two jets are selected and the invariant mass of the corresponding final state is reconstructed. The search exploits the shape of the tb invariant mass distribution compared to the expected Standard Model backgrounds. The model of a right-handed W ′ R with Standard Modellike couplings is chosen as the benchmark model for this search. No statistically significant excess of events is observed in data, and upper limits on the cross section times the branching ratio of W ′ R resonances at 95% CL lie in the range 6.1-1.0 pb for W ′ R masses ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 TeV. These limits are translated into a lower bound on the allowed right-handed W ′ R mass, giving m W ′ R > 1.13 TeV at 95% CL.

Treatment options for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in a renal allograft include radical nephrectomy... more Treatment options for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in a renal allograft include radical nephrectomy or nephron-sparing surgery (NSS). We report the case of local recurrence of an RCC in kidney allograft. Five years after previously undergoing NSS, a recurrent lesion was diagnosed in the upper pole of the kidney graft in a 74-year-old patient during routine duplex ultrasonography. The computerized tomography image showed a spherical lesion of 24 mm in diameter. The patient was free of clinical symptoms and additional staging examinations showed no signs of metastatic spread. Considering the poor function of the kidney allograft with the need for dialysis, a removal of the graft was performed without peri- and postoperative adverse events. The final pathology revealed recurrence of a clear-cell adenocarcinoma of the kidney allograft (pT1a, G1). The patient had an uneventful recovery and was discharged from the hospital after 6 days. During the last follow-up, the patient remained stable on hemodialysis and reported good overall health condition. In conclusion, patients after NSS for small renal masses in kidney allograft should remain under careful observation in order to detect early local recurrence.

Patients with MPC had significantly higher CTC levels [m: 18.5 (1-126)] compared with the other two groups (P < 0.001). A significant positive correlation was demonstrated (P < 0.001) between CTC levels and all tumour burden markers: PSA (Rho = 0.55), T (Tau = 0.47), N (m N1: 18.5, m N0: 0.0) and M ( Tau = 0.54) except Gleason score(Tau = 0.16). The overall survival to 6, 12 and 18 months was 80 %, 69 % and 62 % respectively. The progression-free survival to 6, 12 and 18 months was 76 %, 46 % and 33 % respectively. A cut-off level ≥ 4 CTC (S: 90 %; E: 87.6 %) was chosen to distinguish patients with an unfavorable prognosis. These patients had a significantly shorter median overall and progression-free survival (P < 0.001). As the CTC levels were increasing, the overall survival and progression-free survival decreased. The risk of mortality and progression for the patients with ≥ 4 CTC was 4.1 (IC 95 %: 1.1-14.6; P = 0.029) and 8.5 (IC 95 %: 2.6-26.9; P < 0.001) times higher. Using a multivariate piecewise Cox regression mode, the level of ≥ 4 CTC was an independent predictor of PSA relapse (HR: 5,9; IC 95 %: 1,(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)4; p <0,005). Conclusions: The immunomagnetic analysis allows us to quantify the CTC in peripheral blood and could provide a possibility for correctly staging and to estimate the prognostic value of the metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer with the purpose of the early onset of new therapies.

Although the use of transobturator mesh implants for pelvic organ prolapse repair has been shown to be safe and effective, concern exists that the presence of prosthetic material in the vagina may adversely affect sexual function.Aim. To evaluate the impact of transobturator mesh implantation on sexual function using validated questionnaire.Main Outcome Measures. Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), a validated 19-item questionnaire that assesses six domains of sexual function (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain), was used. The questionnaire was administered preoperatively, and at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months postoperatively. Clinical data were also recorded at each time point.Methods. Prospective nonrandomized study including 96 women with pelvic organ prolapse (cystocele, rectocele, vault prolapse). Transvaginal anterior or posterior wall repair using transobturator mesh implants with or without concomitant transobturator sling procedure.Results. Mean age was 51.4 ± 5.2 years. Mean operating time was 47.6 ± 23.4 minutes, and the mean hospitalization period was 3.8 ± 1.6 days. After initial decrease during the first 3 months, patients experienced a steady improvement in their sexual function. At 24 months postoperatively, the total mean FSFI score reached significantly higher values compared to the baseline (P = 0.023). Furthermore, pain-free intercourse improved during the follow-up reaching mean score of 4.27 ± 0.79 (P < 0.05) after 2 years. Pelvic floor examination at 2 years follow-up showed excellent surgical results with only 3.1% of the patients presenting with stage II vaginal wall prolapse.Conclusions. Surgical repair of symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse using mesh implants results in improvement of major parameters of sexual function. Plasma from 173 patients with HCV genotype 1 infection was analyzed for IP-10 levels prior to tre... more Plasma from 173 patients with HCV genotype 1 infection was analyzed for IP-10 levels prior to treatment with pegylated interferon-α-2a and ribavirin. Significantly lower IP-10 levels were observed in patients achieving a rapid viral response (RVR) (P < .0001), even in those with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2 (P = .004) and with baseline viral load ≥ 2 million IU/mL (P = .001). Similarly, significantly lower IP-10 levels were observed in patients obtaining a sustained viral response (SVR) (P = .0002), including those having higher BMI (P < .05), higher viral load (P = .0005), and both higher BMI and viral load (P < .03). In multivariate logistic regression analyses, a low IP-10 value was independently predictive of both RVR and SVR. A baseline cutoff IP-10 value of 600 pg/mL yielded a negative predictive value (NPV) of 79% (19/24) for all genotype 1–infected patients, which was comparable with that observed using a reduction in HCV-RNA by at least 2 logs after 12 weeks of therapy (NPV 86%; 19/22); by combining the two, 30 of 38 patients (NPV 79%) potentially could have been spared unnecessary therapy. In patients having both higher BMI and viral load, cut-off levels of 150 and 600 pg/mL yielded a positive predictive value (PPV) of 71% and NPV of 100%, respectively. In conclusion, pretreatment IP-10 levels predict RVR and SVR in patients infected with HCV genotype 1, even in those with higher BMI and viral load. A substantial proportion of the latter patients may achieve SVR in spite of unfavorable baseline characteristics if their pretreatment IP-10 level is low. Thus, pretreatment IP-10 analysis may prove helpful in decision-making regarding pharmaceutical intervention. (HEPATOLOGY 2006;44:1617–1625.)
A search is reported for the pair production of a new quark, b ′ , with at least one b ′ decaying... more A search is reported for the pair production of a new quark, b ′ , with at least one b ′ decaying to a Z boson and a bottom quark. The data, corresponding to 2.0 fb −1 of integrated luminosity, were collected from pp collisions at √ s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Using events with a b-tagged jet and a Z boson reconstructed from opposite-charge electrons, the mass distribution of large transverse momentum b ′ candidates is tested for an enhancement. No evidence for a b ′ signal is detected in the observed mass distribution, resulting in the exclusion at 95% confidence level of b ′ quarks with masses m b ′ < 400 GeV that decay entirely via b ′ → Z + b. In the case of a vector-like singlet b ′ mixing solely with the third Standard Model generation, masses m b ′ < 358 GeV are excluded. (c)

Tema que tem sobremaneira ocupado a mente dos juristas da atualidade é aquela relativo à eficácia... more Tema que tem sobremaneira ocupado a mente dos juristas da atualidade é aquela relativo à eficácia e ao papel dos princípios jurídicos no âmbito do sistema normativo em geral, não sendo equivocada a idéia de que a última década do século passado foi marcada, no campo da meditação sobre o direito, pelo "paradigma dos princípios" 1 . Gustavo Zagrebelsky, a propósito, bem percebeu o fenômeno, ao afirmar que a época em que vivemos está marcada, espiritualmente, pela aspiração não a um, mas a inúmeros princípios que conformam a vida em sociedade. 2 Uma vez superada, ao menos em termos de doutrina, a idéia de que o direito não se reduz unicamente à lei em sentido estritoconcepção esta que imperava quando da época do chamado direito do Estado Liberal clássico -, sendo, em verdade, um sistema muito mais complexo do que isso (alguns diriam "hipercomplexo"), voltaram-se as preocupações para a questão da identificação e dos efeitos concretos da presença de tais espécies normativas nas diversas searas do direito.
