This work aims to present a scientific development that can greatly contribute to archaeology: genomics. A discussion about the concept of ancestry, one of the possible products of the archaeogenomic approach, is also presented here along with a brief explanation of the main techniques for ancestry estimation. The availability of such a development means that archaeologists now have methods at their disposal that could not have been dreamed of just a few decades ago.

This is especially true for South America, where unexpected ancestral signals have raised perplexing scenarios for the early migrations into different regions of the continent. Here we present ancient genomes from the archaeologically rich Northeast Brazil and compare them to ancient and present-day genomic data. We find a distinct relationship between ancient genomes from Northeast Brazil, Lagoa Santa, Uruguay and Panama, representing evidence for ancient migration routes along South America's Atlantic coast. To further add to the existing complexity, we also detect greater Denisovan than Neanderthal ancestry in ancient Uruguay and Panama individuals. Moreover, we find a strong Australasian signal in an ancient genome from Panama. This work sheds light on the deep demographic history of eastern South America and presents a starting point for future fine-scale investigations on the regional level.

After the series of military campaigns that exterminated the last remnants of nomadic peoples, Uruguayan official history masked and diluted the former Indigenous ethnic diversity into the narrative of a singular people that all but died out. Here, we present the first whole genome sequences of the Indigenous people of the region before the arrival of Europeans, from an archaeological site in eastern Uruguay that dates from 2,000 years before present. We find a surprising connection to ancient individuals from Panama and eastern Brazil, but not to modern Amazonians. This result may be indicative of a migration route into South America that may have occurred along the Atlantic coast. We also find a distinct ancestry previously undetected in South America. Though this work begins to piece together some of the demographic nuance of the reg...

Here we review the current situation of the technical reserve at the Laboratorio de Arqueologia para Conservacao e Restauro of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. Through the presentation of unique national and international experiences, it is possible to point out contributions that enhance the use of technical reserves as an extraversion space. This work results in the proposal of a new form of archaeological collections management and publicization, here in the form of the Nucleo de Visitacao at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, as an innovative experience of making this extraversion.

Sugar produced on large estates of the Zambezi River Valley was one of Mozambique's major exports... more Sugar produced on large estates of the Zambezi River Valley was one of Mozambique's major exports in the colonial period but production declined radically in the course of the postindependence war. Now, with the entry of multinational sugar conglomerates, cane is growing again, beginning somewhat improbably in the water-starved Incomati Valley. Using a case generally regarded as a success, the Tongaat Hulett mill-plantation complex at Xinavane, this paper focuses on the consequences of the organisation of plantation work on the health of workers, their families and surrounding communities. It shows that the profitability of investment in the technological modernisation of milling, drainage and irrigation remains dependent on enduring forms of labour recruitment, modes of payment and organisation of work that are debilitating for individual and public health.

The radiocarbon dating provided values between 9400±90 BP and 2620±60 BP. However, attempts to dating the bone remain proved fruitless due to the loss of collagen caused by taphonomic processes. From that finding, this research was initiated to assess the degree of diagenetic alteration of the bone remains from the Pedra do Alexandre archaeological site. FTIR and XRD analyses conducted on 6 random human bone samples from the Site and pH measurements in correlated sediments has enabled us to conclude that all the analyzed bone remains were extensively degraded by microbial activity, although in different degrees of alteration.

AND DIRECT DATING EXPERIMENT OF THE BURIALS FROM THE PEDRA DO ALEXANDRE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE - RNABSTRACTArchaeological interventions in the Pedra do Alexandre Archaeological Site resulted in the exhumation of skeletal remains.
