Slave Armies
The US government lost its war in Vietnam largely because of conscription: without conscription, the anti-war movement wouldn't have gathered the almost universal support of young intellectuals threatened by the draft. This is yet another reason why mercenary armies are much better than slave armies.
Partly enslaving your own people under the pretense of freeing other people's slaves.
It didn't work for Lincoln, it didn't work for Johnson.
Lincoln knew better than spinning anti-slavery as the goal of his war;
the real reason was the lust for power and taxes;
the spinned reason was nationalism:
Saving the Union
(at the expense of the forcefully united people,
now uniformly enslaved part-time).
