Things I Love About "Skin" - Postscript

Today I've been reading from Joseph Campbell, and I came across this intriguing passage:

"Art holds the mirror up to nature. The mirror motif is very important and through all these forms, which are simply reflected in the mirror, something beyond the form speaks. There's a Tibetan mediation called 'the mirror meditation' in which one looks at the mirror and sees oneself in the mirror then smashes the mirror and knows that nothing has happened, One's body is as where the mirror reflects of one's eternal aspect."
Goddesses: Mysteries of the Feminine Divine (2013), p, 217

It seemed pertinent to my recent posts about "Skin", in the light of the influence of Campbell on the show (acknowledged by Kripke) and the thematic importance of mirrors and reflection in the episode. It struck me that Dean's killing of the shifter could be likened to the Tibetan ritual. When he shoots the shape shifter, it's like he's smashing the negative reflection of himself that it represents while Dean, his essential self, remains.

Just a thought :)
Part 3: The Subtext
A. K. A. “He’s sure got issues with you”.

Supernatural, Season 1
Episode 6, “Skin”
Written by John Shiban
Directed by Robert Duncan McNeill.

WARNING: This is a very dark and confronting episode. It contains images of sexualized violence and assault, and deals with overt themes of misogyny and violence against women.

ADDITIONAL WARNING FOR THIS PART: It also implicitly raises issues of internalized homophobia, effeminophobia and possible repressed fratricidal and incest longings.

My review does the same.

I hope you’ve found this journey into the darkside interesting and not too disturbing! As always, I look forward to hearing your responses and reflections 😊

NB:
I know these reviews are somewhat over-abundantly tagged. I do this in case anyone is interested in specific recurring themes and might wish to use the tags to follow how those themes are developed from episode to episode. However, if anyone is wondering which tag they need to bookmark in order to get an automatic notification each time a new review is posted, each post is consistently tagged "episode rewatch".

Thanks for reading. I look forward to hearing your thoughts . . . in the comments, I mean. Not in a creepy, shape-shifter way, right? ;)

In Part 2, I'll be looking at the shapeshifter as a "truth teller", a device for expressing Dean's unspoken feelings about himself and Sam. Continue to Part 2.

I've mentioned the Hero's Journey a few times in episodes where the parallels were obvious to me but, re-reading Campbell for this scene, I've realized that I've missed a number of other…

Very thought provoking! I haven't read Joseph Campbell so it is nice to see it laid out like that.

I find it interesting that while both Dean and Sam compare Sam to John, John doesn't. In this scene…

There's a lot to unpack in the last three episodes. Particularly, we'll see the themes from this scene revisited in the confrontation with the Demon in "Devil's Trap".

    Thanks so much for your…
