After Max shoots himself (conveniently relieving Sam and Dean of the responsibility of deciding what to do with him), we move to s scene where Mrs. Miller is explaining things (but not everything) to the police. Beth Broderick gives a moving performance in this scene:
Even Dean is visibly moved by it, another example of the empathic qualities he exhibits in the early seasons.
