Omeka.net is Looking Good

We used Omeka.net to help partners at another University publish a database of Catholic letters (not published yet, so it’s not ready to share) and I think everyone was quite taken by the ease of using the hosted version of Omeka. Unlike the locally installed version of Omeka, Omeka.net is a freemium web service that requires little to no coding skills and no server to get started.

Essentially, Omeka.net works like a hosted blog platform such as Blogger or WordPress.com. You have limited options in terms of look and feel, but the underlying collection building tools are there.

What I like about Omeka.net:

  1. Free or very cheap. You can put together a free collection if your needs are small. If, as was our situation, you have to import your metadata via spreadsheet or have some other plugins you need (some you have to pay for an account to use), then you’ll have to pay a subscription fee. But the fees are likely quite affordable for your organization.
  2. Easy peasy. Very little if any understanding of web technologies is required. In our situation, we had some problems that required some technical thinking mostly in terms of cleaning up our spreadsheet , converting it to UTF-8 and making it work with Omeka, but this kind of expertise should be easy to find in your institution. Once the platform is set up, non-technical staff can pretty much run it and add to it without issue.
  3. It’s pretty good and just getting started. In the past few months, new themes and plugins have started to come online and I expect that this platform will be very robust in just another year or two.
  4. Your collection will become part of the Omeka.net network of collections, which should help with Search Engine Optimization as well as serendipitous discovery.
  5. It feels pretty rock-solid and reliable.

What I don’t like about it:

  1. It’s still early days and some features from the full Omeka version are not yet available.
  2. Very limited theming, meaning you have only 8 different themes and none of these let you control color. However, you can add banner images and footers to brand it.
  3. The help documentation is fairly helpful for most situations, but if you run into some advanced issues, you’ll have to hope someone on the Omeka forums can help.

Tomorrow’s Tool Library on Steroids

The pace of change (and of devices) is outpacing the consumer’s ability to purchase the latest and greatest. Couple that with asset-light trends toward sharing commodities and you can see a niche for libraries.

The public has just spent billions on touch screen devices, smartphones and upgrades to our computers. And now, this year, we’re being presented with Microsoft’s Surface and soon wearable computers. Even the most savvy techsumers, wielding the latest MacRumors Buyer’s Guide is having trouble keeping up with the dot.joneses.

And, if Ray Kurzweil is to be believed (and I am a Kurzweilian true believer), the rate of technological change, and therefore consumer gadget innovations, will surely decimate our Google Wallets in short order.

But a recent trend in libraries to rethink themselves as gadget bars, maker spaces and digital media delivery centers could very well be the cure to the world’s ever-quickening pulse rate.

My favorite library of all time was the Berkeley Public Library’s Tool Library which I once used to turn the urban waste dump behind my old East Bay apartment into tranquil, solar-powered salad delivery system. Fast-forward a decade or two and you can see the slightly different, yet similar need that is arising from the gadget frenzy that is only getting worse.

Actually, many public library’s have been delivering computer power, laptop checkout and even courses for some time. But let’s add some Lance Armstrong-strength steroids to this model and see what we can come up with.

But first, what are the gaps that need filling?

  1. Devices are being upgraded and made obsolete at an increasingly fast pace. Why not just provide our users with the lastest and greatest either free or at a small subscription rate…rent by the hour, the week or by the month.
  2. Include in our offerings all kinds of equipment from laptops to tablets, cameras to e-readers, 3D printers to digital drawing tablets…and oh yes! The latest versions of software!!!
  3. And for those that opt for the hourly model, let’s support them by moving their digital content to the cloud…a sort of cloud migration service.
  4. But the cloud is such a drag. There are so many options out there: Evernote, iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox. How’s your average person supposed to make sure they do it right? How about we librarians come up with consultant staff that can recommend solutions based on the user’s specific needs…ala the Geek Squads and Apple Store models.

The Library Website Will Disappear

A new year always elicits thoughts about the future, but this month, my library has been considering our next strategic plan, which has focused those thoughts for me on my library and the profession in general.

Since I’m principally charged with managing the online aspects of my library, I come to these kinds of discussions focused on web platforms, online communication and consumer technology trends. One of the biggest trends (you may have noticed) has been the adoption of mobile, touch screen devices like iPhones and tablets. I include even Microsoft’s attempt at reinventing the PC with its Surface Tablet, despite early failures to woo consumers. And given this apparently irresistable move toward mobile, tablet-like computing, I have to ask: what does this ultimately mean for the library’s web properties: our websites, our online instruction guides, our discovery systems and our digital collections?

Palo Alto Venture Capital firm KPCB recently explored this very issue in their 2012 Internet Trends Report. Some major insights from their report include:

  • Mobile traffic is now 13% of all global Internet traffic, up from just 1% in 2009. In some countries, like India, mobile Internet traffic has surpassed desktop traffic.
  • Almost 1/3 of US adults own a tablet or e-reader
  • Together, iOS and Android are 45% of the OS market share, vs. 35% for Windows
  • The install base of Tablets + Smartphones will surpass PCs + Notebooks this year

But one trend that stands out in KPCB’s analysis is that of the Asset-Light generation. A long-form definition can be found via a very Asset-Light resource: Quib.ly. But to put it more succinctly, being asset-light means your lifestyle is one less reliant on physical commodities and personal know-how, but instead, relies on cloud and crowd-sourcing just about everything. You don’t carry around notepads, you don’t buy maps, you don’t rely on “experts” for medical advice or which movie to see next. Asset-lighters, meet their needs by streaming, connecting and sharing.

From KPCB’s perspective, this is quite important in terms of where the web is heading. Some notable examples relavent to libraries include: MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), Amazon Textbook Rental and of course, good-ole Wikipedia.

So, socially, we’re moving toward a very different economy and radically different means of information distribution, especially when it comes to learning.

Add to this, two major and imminent innovations and you will get a glimpse at just how different the world will be in only 5 years:

  1. Wearable devices, especially eyeware will give people the ability to navigate the Internet by voice command, gesture and all through lenses fixed to their faces. Status: Google Glasses are expected to enter the market in early 2013 and Apple won’t be far behind.
  2. Artificially-intelligent agents will not quite resemble HAL from 2001, but be very capable of understanding your vocal commands and then ferreting quite reliable answers to your questions or carrying out mundane tasks, like creating appointments or sending messages for you. Status: Did you see IBM Watson slaughter Jeopardy’s world champions or used SIRI on your iPhone?

So, the way we gather information and where we go to get it is already changing. And the interfaces are already being revolutionized and that pace will accelerate dramatically over the next 5 years as voice and sight overtake the the very impractical and immobile keyboard…even the touchscreen may be reduced to the point where iPads seem like a whimsical dead-end much like 8 track or Beta tapes.

All of these changes will have an immediate effect on the core of our current Internet paradigm: the Web Page.

Text and links with a smattering of images have been the key content types of of web pages since Tim Berners Lee first formulated the WWW. Mobile devices have changed all that. Not only do they steer away from typical web interfaces in favor of “apps,” they actually de-link parts of the web from each other. The result, in most cases is a much more curated and manageable Internet.

And this is important for libraries, whose pages are almost hard-wired around interconnecting pages together in rather daunting tangles of hyperlinks, portals and gateways. Unfortunately, this paradigm is increasingly less relevant to today’s devices and today’s Asset-lighters, who expect a web page to cut through the clutter and get them the answer. In fact, they want an app to do the heavy-lifting for them.

And add to this, semi-intelligent software agents and a re-conceived commercial Internet based around voice and sight and you can see how much work libraries have ahead of them.

The users 5 years from now that enter our libraries’ virtual spaces, will expect a curated, largely automated experience. Already, we see this on the ground where incoming students are completely beside themselves in the antiquated library environment. One recent Facebook post on my library’s newsfeed noted: “The Library has a website?”

Another telling anecdote: One colleague of mine defined her job as teaching people to fish. I then asked: How many people actually go fishing anymore. Fishing to them is dropping by the supermarket. Full-stop.

The world is just getting too complicated for people to be expected to take the time to find information on their own. Information will continue to be a commodity, yes. Information will continue to badger the human mind. But AI servants and wildly different means of gathering information, will mean that single individuals will never have to tackle almost any information problem alone. The crowd, the bots and the apps will do the fishing.

And the web page will be like Matrix code that few ever need to concern themselves with. Get ready…

Saved by the Cloud

I’ve been playing around with Omeka.net, the hosted version of the digital collections platform Omeka, and have fallen hard for it.

A number of months ago, my university partnered with the National University of Ireland at Galway to find a new home for an annotated catalog of letters and primary documents from the Vatican Archives. It turns out that online access to the collection was in danger due to the financial troubles in Ireland, specifically, that the funding for the server and the IT staff required to support it was going away.

So, my library offered its assistance and I began exploring the options.

The ideal platform would have to have staying power, be relatively cheap and satisfy the feature list as closely as possible from the old website. Also desirable, of course, would be that it would use web standards, be simple to maintain and require no IT support.

Fortunately, this was happening just after the folks at George Mason University had turned their open source Omeka platform into a hosted service. Omeka is a platform designed around familiar web publishing conventions similar to WordPress, so for administrators, it would be quite easy. However, the traditional in-house server-based version would require at least one full-time IT staff member who could configure a LAMP server, install and configure Omeka and then keep it updated and running.

That would be impossible at my university where no server was available (or at least no production servers) to the library and where PHP (which Omeka is based on) is frowned upon.

But, with the hosted version coming online, Omeka.net, we could meet all of our criteria with additional benefits:

  • No server required…just sign up for an account and you’re ready to get started
  • No IT staff required
  • Simple item and collection management through web forms, making it possible for the researchers to continue adding to their collection without further assistance
  • A growing list of plugins, including CSV imports, Dublin Core mapping, etc. to meet most of the feature requirements
  • OAI-PMH interoperability, making it possible for the collection to be harvested by other systems and uses
  • Plus, the collection automatically rolls up into the growing universe of other Omeka.net collections, enhancing SEO and find-ability

The only real shortcomings of the system were its very limited theming and some missing plugins, such as faceted browsing and timeline features. However, it’s clearly early days for this blossoming platform and I expect good things to be added in the near future.

The live version will go online soon after we finalize a few graphics and textual decisions. But the collection is now safe and sound and poised to grow and develop in a stable and promising platform.

Optimism for a Change

The good folks at Singularity University continue to trail blaze into a starry-eyed future. I’m pretty pessimistic about where we’re headed, but watching Peter Diamandis explain away fear and how the future is one of abundance and optimism, even made me hopeful.

Cloud Computing…For Reallies

I ordered a Samsung Chromebook for testing at the library last week and it just arrived today, so the testing has begun! And, so far, it’s like falling in love all over again. Well almost.

Hyperbole aside, the Chromebook truly is something to get excited about: it’s cloud computing applied to personal computing in a big way. Log in to your Google account (with a real keyboard folks!) and your synced googlelandia opens up for you in this browser-only, cloud-based computing platform…all your Chrome Browser extensions you set up in the past…all your Google docs…all of that…brought in from the cloud and ready for use just as you left it on your other computer.

The whole experience is cloud-like in many other ways. First off, the device is quite light, weighing just under 4 pounds, but the lack of the usual OS complexities really approximates floating. No system messages crowding out your work. No labyrinthine file structures to lose documents in. No barrier between your web browsing and your desktop…there is no desktop!

Okay, that’s all nice and good, but what about the downsides? Well, I haven’t had much time with the Chromebook to tire of its eccentricities, but the first negative impression I had concerned the plastic-y look and feel. Samsung (the hardware maker) really cut corners on the materials. At once, this makes for a light device, but also gives it a “disposable” feel. That said, the keyboard is real nice and responds well as I type this review up. The trackpad, however, does end up on the junky side. It’s better than I expected, but what I would do for a non-Apple hardware maker to deliver something at least as good as Apple does in this area. Still, it has tap-to-click and some other touch-based features…so overall, the track pad suffices.

But the main gripe I have with the device so far, is with the display. There is, as of right now, no way to calibrate the color of the display. So, as I sit here on my couch, rocking out to Pandora, my dog beside me and everything nice and groovy, my eyes are awash in bluish whites and greenish yellows. Oh well, can’t have everything…and certainly not in the first gen model.

Now for library plans…this device is first and foremost a test machine just to check what our library web services operate on the Google platform. But a secondary interest is the potential for this kind of machine as a library loaner device. Running at $500 a pop, it seems a great candidate for such purposes as well. We’d have to sort out the user data/privacy issue with Chrome OS though, since each user signs in as themselves (their Google self that is), which could be a problem…have to investigate that. Meanwhile, it looks pretty good.

And so, all in all, I love this little, cloudy PC. Love it! Just can’t wait for the high end Chromebook to come out…

Library Who Dunnit

The joke lately at my library is that our website just doesn’t matter anymore. Today, I saw this sentiment come alive in our analytics data.

As you can see from the graph below, we have a typical academic usage pattern, with activity building up during a quarter, peaking just before finals and then crashing as students rush off on their inter-quarterly wanderings.

What was interesting in this last quarter’s data was that this activity failed to build to its usual tempo. In fact, it appeared to build and then flatten out.

The culprit? I think this is our hosted research help portal, LibGuides, which we just soft-launched in the middle of the quarter…about the very time student research needs start to draw them to the library. Pre-LibGuides, we would see alot of traffic to our locally-hosted Subject Guides, which would show up in our analytics data. But LibGuides, which is replacing these Subject Guides, is off the radar as far as Google Analytics is concerned (for now), so this may be why we saw such low numbers.

Anyway, with WorldCat Local configuration almost complete and LibGuides readying for a hard launch in Fall, the library web site will likely see even further erosion in usage. And this is a very good thing, because it means we’ve gotten all the other stuff out of the way, improved the signal to noise ratio and just simplified the act of accessing our resources (which are also all off-site and out in the cloud).

That’s what they call usability folks!

Your Library: A Disruptive Publishing Platform

Followers of the Internet’s short, but remarkable history, will have to admit that all the early talk in the 1990s of the web as an agent of social disruption are beginning to cascade into reality. Hyperlinks are finally beginning to reach into corporate email caches and government communication logs. The crumbling of the music industry is now spreading to print publishing and film. And corrupt regimes from Tunisia to Iran to China are struggling to grapple with the consequences of a connected citizenry.

These stories get lots of press. But, an different kind of online revolution is sweeping through the library world, which you may have heard of, but gets much less fanfare: libraries are becoming not just storehouses for books, but publishers as well.

A good chunk of this publishing power is owed to the proliferation of cheap, simple-but-powerful, cloud-based publishing solutions.

Since 2008, the technology world has been all abuzz about cloud computing, and now that mantra is top on the agenda at nearly every kind of government, business or educational conference.

Librarians will recognize this topic well, since it has been top of the agenda at our conferences for some time now. In fact, we kind of led the hype cycle years ago. Our shared catalogs, journal database services and even, in some cases, shared online reference services, have been distributed in cloud-like fashion for decades. In fact, at a recent OCLC preso, the librarians in attendance were reminded that OCLC Founder Frederick G.Kilgour was talking up the cloud concept back in the 1960s.

My own library is engaged in cloud-based publishing already. The university’s institutional repository, which I administer, is one such hosted service with content archived, backed-up and made available online via the Berkeley Press’ Digital Commons platform. On it, you’ll find full-text faculty articles and eBooks, student dissertations and theses, conferences and online journals all published by the university community. I’m even working with a faculty member on getting an art gallery set up for her oral history project. What’s more, it’s fully indexed by the major search engines, so it’s a fantastic way to bring attention to the university’s intellectual legacy.

The technology behind Digital Commons, is a very simple, but powerful, web publishing platform that is a good example of the benefits of the cloud. When the university first started this journey, we did not have to build anything. Once we decided who to go with, we just licensed the platform and turned it on. All the maintenance, security and development is handled by Berkeley Press. And what’s really nice is that because online publishing is their business, they have the incentive and focus to do a good job. And if they ever don’t satisfy, we can just move shop to another provider…with a little effort.

Of course, as is often the case with such hosted products, you have to give up some design and development control. So far, this has been the one true wrinkle. A common complaint I get is in regards to layout limitations. But to BePress’ credit, their response time to our requests is superb.

But back to disruption and revolution…Digital Commons is a good example of how cloud computing can be an agent of change…you know, like Twitter and Facebook, what I like to call the Molotov Cocktails of the 21st Century. What else would you expect from a product out of Berkeley anyway?

To be sure, traditional publishers see platforms like Digital Commons as a threat. For an industry famously desperate and broke, the online publishing model strikes right at their bottom line. That’s because platforms like Digital Commons remove the middleman from the equation and give full control over to the author and the author’s institution. For faculty and students whose primary motivation is not to enrich a publisher, but to have their work get noticed in a timely manner befitting our Internet age, this is a real coup.

And as I said, such cloud-based publishing platforms are also a revolution for libraries, which have traditionally been in the business of cataloging and sharing content, rather than producing it. But that’s just the crazy world we live in now.

Of course, in my opinion, the real disruptive publisher of our day are the blogging platforms like WordPress, which truly turn publishing loose to anyone…at no cost. And like other instances of the cloud, you can just turn them on and off at will. Nobody gets hurt. No one goes broke. But the creative energies are loosened on the world, unfiltered and unabridged.

But if you’re talking about trying bridge the old world with the hyper-atomized future that blogs foretell, well, my library can take authors there as soon as they say “go.”
