The People Wide Web

The debate around Net Neutrality has taken an interesting spin of late. Just as foes to Net Neutrality have gotten closer to their goal of setting up tollways and traffic controls on the information superhighway, some drivers are beginning to build their own transportation system altogether.

Net Neutrality is a concept that has been the norm on the Internet since its inception: the idea that every website gets equal treatment by Internet Service Providers (ISPs). But of course, media companies and the ISPs could conceivably benefit greatly if surcharges for access to higher bandwidth were allowed on the Net. For example, let’s say that Cable Company A offers priority bandwidth to Media Company X, allowing it to serve super high-def streaming video to users at lightning speed. However, Startup Company Z will then be obligated to compete against Media Company X for that bandwidth in order to provide the same quality service. Same goes for Blogger Y.

Fat chance of that. Indeed, given the pace at which media consolidation continues to go unchecked by regulators, were Net Neutrality abandoned, the Internet would quickly resemble something akin to how Network Television dominated communication in the years before high-speed Internet arrived.

And this is what concerns many people since a free, open web has so clearly promoted innovation. So far, the battle is not lost and Net Neutrality is still the norm. Nevertheless, some are creating back up plans.

This past week, BitTorrent, the people behind the popular torrent app uTorrent, announced they are exploring the creation of a new Internet which takes back control of the web and distributes access to websites across peer-to-peer networks.

Called Project Maelstrom, this torrent-based Internet would be powered by a new browser which would effectively rework the Internet into a much freer network with pretty much no gatekeepers.

Details are sparse at the moment, but essentially access to websites would be served as torrents, and thus not served from a single server. Instead, the sites would exist across the peer-to-peer network, in small, redundant bits living on people’s computers. Essentially, its the same technique used for torrent-based file sharing. When you try to access a site, your computer queries the torrent network and dozens of computers begin sending you the packets you need to rebuild the web page in question on your browser. And even as the web page is partially assembled, your computer then begins sharing what it already has with other people trying to access the site.

The result could likely be a much faster Internet, with much greater assurances of privacy. But technical questions remain and this does sound like it could take some time. But wow, what a revolution it would be.

Of course, this could get tricky to pull off. As you may have heard this week, the infamous torrent website Pirate Bay was taken down by authorities in Sweden this week. Pirate Bay serves up links to torrents allowing people to download everything from freeware applications to Hollywood movies that haven’t even been released yet and so has been targeted by law enforcement for years now. Even on today’s Internet, Pirate Bay could conceivably come back online at any time. But if the BitTorrent’s peer-to-peer Internet were realized, Pirate Bay would be back up instantaneously. Indeed, it would probably never come down in the first place. Same goes for Dark Net sites that sell everything from drugs to human beings, which have also been recently taken offline.

Bottom line is: Project Maelstrom is another example of how a free and open Internet is unlikely to ever go away. Question is, how much freedom is a good thing?

My own personal take is that taking back control of the Internet from media companies and ISPs would, on balance, be a great thing. Bad people do bad things in the physical world and that’s why we have never defeated crime 100%. As long as there is an Internet, there will be those that abuse it.

But even more importantly, innovation, freedom of speech and freedom to access information are core to advancing society. So I welcome Project Maelstrom.

Ed Sez – Tips from Edward Snowden on Foiling the Snoopers

At the recent SXSW conference, Edward Snowden supplied people with tips to complicate the lives, if not totally block, those that stick their noses in your online business.

Not to be confused with trying to ruin the chances of the NSA averting a nuclear strike by terrorists on my own country, I do feel there are some well-reasoned limits to what the US government should be doing, especially when it comes to figuring out ways to undermine secure Internet protocols. After all, when, as purported by Snowden, the NSA begins devising backdoor hacks into our web browsers, you can be certain that this only makes it easier for others (perhaps dangerous) individuals from doing the same.

In other words, in the name of the War on Terror, the NSA might actually be planting the seeds for the death of the Internet…or at least a 9/11 style assault on the world’s computer infrastructure. Students of the origins of Bin Laden and his connections with the US War on Communism might be right to feel a little déjà vu.

A related threat, of course, is that criminals might stand on the shoulders of the NSA’s good work and do some very bad work against you and your bank account and your identity.

Anyway, that’ my soap box speech on this.

But back to my recent spat of blogs on privacy and how to cover your virtual butts. Snowden did hand out a few treats for the kids at SXSW: two browser plugins that he regards as good ways to enhance your privacy against NSA or NSA-inspired hackers.

The first is Ghostery, which allows you to view what web services are collecting data on you when you visit a given web page. It goes further by letting you (Ad Block style) block, pause or allow such collection.

I’ve been using it for a few days and have found it fascinating just how many scripts are gathering info on me when I land on a given page. Right now, I have everything turned off, so that should take care of that.

I did experience one problem watching an embedded video on a website. In these cases, you can pause all of Ghostery or try to figure out which one of the dozen or so scripts it’s blocking is the required one for the video and then decide if it’s worth it.

The other plugin is called NoScript, which simply shuts down all scripts, including JavaScript, Flash, etc. I haven’t tried this out, but I’m expecting it be something I will only use sparingly given the amount of jQuery and other useful bits embedded in many web interfaces.

 

Back to Firefox – Update on Sync

This goes out to all you paraoid netizens out there, and if you’re not one, you should be…

As a follow-up to my last post on moving off Chrome and back to Firefox for privacy and security reasons, I wanted to document that I gave Firefox Sync a closer look.

Mozilla, the folks that develop Firefox, has a very detailed information page on Firefox Sync, but to sum up, this feature allows one to share add-ons, bookmarks, passwords, preferences, history and tabs across all your computers and other devices.

Firefox Sync PreferencesDouble-plus-good: you can decide what to sync and what not to. Because I’m trying to be extra careful with my data, I opted for syncing only my add-ons, bookmarks and preferences. One important note on syncing add-ons, this will install your add-ons across your devices, but not necessarily configure them, so you might have to do that part manually.

If you opt to sync your history, it will do so up to 60 days.

Reading over the security details of Firefox Sync, it seems like you’re in pretty good hands since sync uses an encryption key. I consider passwords and history going beyond my tolerance threshold, but these are likely pretty secure for most folks. My rule is to assume that hackers access my sync data: What can I live with leaking out to the public?

Add-ons? okay
Bookmarks? I guess so.
History? Not really
Passwords? Are you kidding?

When I set up sync, I also added Firefox as my default phone browser which I find no problems with yet and it’s nice to know that I’m surfing as privately on Android as on OSX.

I’m breaking up with Google, one service at a time. Last week it was Google’s search engine, which I swapped for DuckDuckGo. This week, it’s Google’s Chrome Browser.

As I said a week ago, recent revelations of the commodification of our personal information, the revolving door our personal information swings through between tech companies and the world governments and the increasingly effective hacking of our financial transactions and personal information, has made me rethink my decision to trade privacy for convenience.

Step one was to wean myself off of Google.com.

Step two will be to sever another link in the chain between me and Google’s databases: the Chrome Browser.

To be fair, Chrome can be configured and used in a very private and secure way. You can surf “incognito,” leaving no history of what pages you have traversed. You can also use the browser so that it deletes your cookies when you end a session.

And as always, some of the best encryption freely available comes built into the Chrome browser.

So, you could easily argue that dropping Chrome is actually less secure.

But, I think you could equally argue that handing over your private data to any company is taking a big leap of faith. Especially, when that data can add up to a very personal and detailed profile of you. For example, the consolidation of Google Plus, Gmail and YouTube accounts meant that user data across these sites could now be consolidated into a single database of web activity that included a matrix of personal email, web searches, social connections, video views and even the text of attachments. Worse, Google claims ownership to this data once you “share” it with them.

So just because Chrome can be directed (by advanced users) to minimize the data shared with Google, you have to wonder. A breach of this very robust personal data is entirely possible. Indeed, the Chinese apparently already did this. And, as privacy expert Ashkan Soltaini (quoted above) notes, why help snoopers, hackers and commercial interests gather intelligence on you by (unnecessarily) relying on its browser?

¡Adiós el Chromo!

I was once a big Firefox fan, so switching back was not that hard. I stopped using Firefox, only because another Firefox-clone, called Flock, came out in 2009 with many social networking features built in. This was largely around the time the Add-on marketplace for Firefox wasn’t really keeping up. But the people behind Flock eventually abandoned the project and so I was momentarily back in Firefox. But around that time, Firefox (at least the Mac OS version) was pretty lousy in terms of handling complex websites that were deploying AJAX and other javascript intensive activities.

One of the best things about Chrome, in fact, was its speed…and some built-in development tools that I felt were way superior to their closest Firefox Add-ons, like Firebug. So, I started using Chrome…until a week ago.

First and foremost, Firefox comes to us from Mozilla, an open-source organization that has proven itself deeply concerned with protecting privacy and security on the web.

Firefox Privacy Settings

I’ve experimented with the privacy settings in Firefox, and I consider my current setup a work in progress. My focus here is to give some guidelines for how one might configure Firefox to maximize their privacy while not making everything a test of their faith.

Search

  • Remove Google, Bing and Yahoo! from the search engines installed in Firefox
  • Add a private search engine as the default. As of this writing, I use DuckDuckGo right now, but I’m experimenting with others. Update: Read my post on Startpage, which is my preferred private search engine now.
  • Optional: I added the Omnibar add-on for a more Chrome-like experience, which as far as I can tell does not report back what you enter it to the developer’s database. If you’re concerned about this, just don’t add the Omnibar.

Privacy

  • Obviously be sure to select the “Tell sites I do not want to be tracked” setting.
  • History and Cookies: I go back and forth between not capturing history, keeping all history and deleting history upon closing Firefox. Currently, I have everything deleted when I end the session.
  • Set the browser to Never Accept Third Party Cookies

Security

  • I use a master password…and you’d be crazy not to. To understand why, just open your preferences and, under Security, click the Saved Passwords button. Then click Show Passwords. There they are…hopefully you’re not sharing your screen when you do this!

Sync and Advanced

  • I don’t sync, but I’ve been tempted to. I need to research this more before committing, but on the face of it, it feels less secure to do so.
  • Network, you can set up a SOCKS Proxy, but I use Private Internet Access VPN, when I’m using public wi-fi, so I haven’t explored this.
  • Make sure you have Auto-updates installed to be confident Firefox has the latest security patches, etc.

It’s been fun to be back in Firefox. I feel a little bit like a rebel, in fact! And the good news, the browser feels more light-weight and agile then in the past with all those heavy JavaScript-ladden sites running at a good clip! And, whoa! The developer tools are now built into Firefox, so that means one less Add-on slowing things down.

Meanwhile, I’m continuing to explore other secure ways of living online. Coming soon: Thumb drive applications, Gmail alternatives and a secure way to get Google search without using Google!

Cloud Computing…For Reallies

I ordered a Samsung Chromebook for testing at the library last week and it just arrived today, so the testing has begun! And, so far, it’s like falling in love all over again. Well almost.

Hyperbole aside, the Chromebook truly is something to get excited about: it’s cloud computing applied to personal computing in a big way. Log in to your Google account (with a real keyboard folks!) and your synced googlelandia opens up for you in this browser-only, cloud-based computing platform…all your Chrome Browser extensions you set up in the past…all your Google docs…all of that…brought in from the cloud and ready for use just as you left it on your other computer.

The whole experience is cloud-like in many other ways. First off, the device is quite light, weighing just under 4 pounds, but the lack of the usual OS complexities really approximates floating. No system messages crowding out your work. No labyrinthine file structures to lose documents in. No barrier between your web browsing and your desktop…there is no desktop!

Okay, that’s all nice and good, but what about the downsides? Well, I haven’t had much time with the Chromebook to tire of its eccentricities, but the first negative impression I had concerned the plastic-y look and feel. Samsung (the hardware maker) really cut corners on the materials. At once, this makes for a light device, but also gives it a “disposable” feel. That said, the keyboard is real nice and responds well as I type this review up. The trackpad, however, does end up on the junky side. It’s better than I expected, but what I would do for a non-Apple hardware maker to deliver something at least as good as Apple does in this area. Still, it has tap-to-click and some other touch-based features…so overall, the track pad suffices.

But the main gripe I have with the device so far, is with the display. There is, as of right now, no way to calibrate the color of the display. So, as I sit here on my couch, rocking out to Pandora, my dog beside me and everything nice and groovy, my eyes are awash in bluish whites and greenish yellows. Oh well, can’t have everything…and certainly not in the first gen model.

Now for library plans…this device is first and foremost a test machine just to check what our library web services operate on the Google platform. But a secondary interest is the potential for this kind of machine as a library loaner device. Running at $500 a pop, it seems a great candidate for such purposes as well. We’d have to sort out the user data/privacy issue with Chrome OS though, since each user signs in as themselves (their Google self that is), which could be a problem…have to investigate that. Meanwhile, it looks pretty good.

And so, all in all, I love this little, cloudy PC. Love it! Just can’t wait for the high end Chromebook to come out…

Don’t Forget the Long Tail!

First, off sorry for the hiatus of late…been busy prepping various library sites for a major migration to SharePoint…more on that soon…

Meanwhile, as part of this migration, I’ve been pouring over analytics data to fathom what on earth our users are doing, what’s popular, what’s not.

And then this morning, as I executed my usual Sunday morning web wanderings, I stumbled upon another user interface redesign based on analytics when I noticed that the RSS icon on Firefox 4 was missing. This led me to discover that this was baked in by Mozilla:

Apparently, Mozilla was also looking at user data and noted that less than 3% of users were using the RSS feed icon, which if you know how to use it, allows you to subscribe to feeds from web sites you like (blogs, news, etc.). And if you don’t know how to use it, you get a really bad user experience.

Well, I definitely fit into this 3% that actively used the RSS icon. And luckily, there are add-0ns for everything with Firefox, like one that puts the RSS back into FF4, so no real issue here. But it does remind us info architects that users come in many flavors and we ignore the minority at our peril.

Fortunately, Mozilla’s development model, accommodates everybody by offering add-ons to their browser platform, so no harm done. But for the rest of us, locked into less elegant platforms, don’t forget the long tail!

No Flashing Allowed

I thought I’d chime in (once again) on the use of Flash, which some at TechCrunch are discussing. Quite simply, I’ve made it the policy at my library to avoid Flash. And this will stand until the usability issues, performance and Apple OS issues get resolved.

As a former Adobe employee, I want Flash to work, but it currently does not…at least not reliably. As a casual web user, you may have noticed how Flash content can cause pages to not load. Or how it doesn’t behave the way other cotent does (no right-click, copying text is problematic, and now the scroll wheel on my mouse seizes up if the cursor falls over a flash object). And, with so many students opting into the Appleverse, it’s not a safe bet to produce crucial resources in Flash at the library.

I don’t enforce this rule, as Library Instruction is very Flash-oriented and has much of their content in Flash. And they have their reasons, which I respect. But on our site, it’s a Flashless experience.

Life in Tabs

Jason Kincaid over at Tech Crunch just posted the first in his series of reviews of the new Google Chrome OS. Yay.

Yes, it seems that the long-awaited cloud operating system seems to be on it’s way, and so far, Kincaid is optimistic that this won’t be another fad…and hopefully not another Google Wave.

This all comes as I’ve been transitioning browsers, moving off the Mozilla-based Flock browser, which I’ve been on for a couple years, and onto the precursor of Chrome OS, the Chrome browser.

Flock was awesome, but as the developers behind it began moving toward their own cloud-oriented (let’s call it cloudy) browser, the Mozilla-based version started getting a little buggy. In all fairness, I think the problems Flock faced had more to do with trying to integrate their browser with dozens of social networking APIs. For example, the integrated Facebook feed never really worked that well. But all that said, this browser was really a great tool and I loved how it wove social networking into their browser.

But, dear Flock, I’ve met someone new. Chrome. Yes, the one I was flirting with when visiting Google Docs and Gmail. In fact, now that I’m with Chrome, it all just feels so familiar, like we’ve known one another for years.

Anyway, back to life in tabs…the more I live with a smartphone, the more I really want all those promises of a cloudy OS to be kept. You know, the synching of my browser extensions, settings, bookmarks, etc. And since I live in my browser, why shouldn’t it integrate seamlessly with my desktop. All this makes me excited about Chrome.

Plus, it’s yet another thing to try. And (even as I write this), I’m reminded that it’s always good to have multiple browsers on hand to test pages with. Already, I’ve seen some weirdness in how Chrome displays sections of some pages. Not too many students are using Chrome to access my library yet, but their numbers are bound to climb.

Now…on to adding the delicious extension!
