    Google Play Services jar isn’t free. The rest (loads of Googley stuff) probably are., though there would be a lot of work to check them all out. The Google play Services library connects to Google Play services apk on the device. Now, there could be steps taken to make sure that the app works in the event that Google PlayServices isn’t installed, so if we replace Google Play services jar with a dummy library, the app may still function. But there is no information about this. Also all the Google Drive nonsense wouldn’t work without supplying API keys and God know what else.

    Actually the project description makes me a bit skeptical:

    sounds like cryptographical snake oil – at least anyone with a rooted phone can circumvent any of these measures. In addittion the ability to remotely delete messages sounds like there could be a security nightmare or two. Also did not find if they use any encryption in addition to what is provided by google cloud.

    I heard the same claim fro Silent Circle so maybe it’s not so far fetched.

    Surespot is an opensource messenger using end-to-end encryption. I hope this one gets added to f-droid. It seems like a pretty good alternative to WhatsApp, since sending pictures is implemented aswell.

    It makes use of Google Play Services so , 1. we can’t build it because the library is proprietary 2. if we did patch out the library maybe the app would not work so well. Best thing is to contact the developers and maybe they will make a branch without Google Play Services.

    An issue for that is already open on github. Let’s hope the devs will provide surespot without those Google services.

    You can use kontalk for encrypted messaging; it’s in the repo and can send (unencrypted) images. At the moment it’s mostly still a proof-of-concept, but it works fine and work is being done on a new version with top-notch crypto.
