This study examined the associations among nutrition, PA, and morbidity among older adults in Nigeria. Subject and methods A cross-sectional design was adopted, and a multistage sampling technique was used to survey 330 older adult residents of a town in Nigeria. Nutritional status and physical activity levels were assessed using the full Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire, respectively. It also included questions about the presence of health problems when diagnosed and respondents' perceptions of their health. Results About 62% of the respondents had at least one chronic illness, and the prevalent conditions included musculoskeletal (25.6%), heart conditions (16.6%), and ear/eye problems (9.7%). Findings further showed that 21.4% were at risk of malnutrition and 1.9% were malnourished. Also, 31.6% reported low PA participation. Morbidity was significantly associated with age (p < 0.000), level of education (p < 0.000), income (p < 0.000), PA (p < 0.000), and nutrition (p = 0.045). In addition, factors that predicted the presence or absence of chronic illness included nutrition (OR = 0.395, p = 0.016), high PA (OR = 0.077, p = 0.000), age (OR = 1.063, p = 0.006), BMI overweight (OR = 0.127, p < .000), education (OR = 1.835, p = 0.001), artisan occupation (OR = 3.382, p = 0.006), and income of 10,000-20,000 Nigerian naira per month (OR = 0.363, p = 0.023). Conclusion Chronic illness is prevalent among older adults and is associated with poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and certain demographic characteristics.

On the other hand, the Hand Grip Strength (HGS) test primarily is used to measure muscular strength or maximum tension generated by one's forearm muscles. This study aimed to assess the relationship between 3-MBWT and HGS among community-dwelling young older adults. Material and methods: Sixty-two community-dwelling older adults participated in this study. 3-MBWT was measured using a standardized procedure. HGS was measured in line with the guidelines of the American Society of Hand Therapists. Anthropometric variables were assessed following standard procedures. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to verify the correlation between 3-MBWT and HGS and the influence of socio-demographic factors on both 3-MBWT and HGS. Results: The mean values for 3-MBWT and HGS were 3.45 ± 0.80s and 29.58 ± 15.53kg. There was a significant correlation between 3-MBWT and HGS (r = -0.39; p = 0.002). However, there was no significant correlation between 3-MBWT and socio-demographics (p > 0.05). Similarly, there was no significant correlation between HGS and sociodemographics (p > 0.05), except height (r = 0.51, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The 3-MBWT and HGS were significantly correlated with one another. Anthropometric characteristics did not influence the 3-MBWT. Only height and sex showed a significant influence on HGS. Therefore, both 3-MBWT and HGS may serve as useful functional outcome measures for fall predictability and frailty in older adults.

Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive, quantitative cross-sectional study. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to all the 52 elderly in the two selected homes for the elderly in Lagos. Data was analysed with SPSS version 20 and presented as tables using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: They were mainly females (65.4%) with widowed (65.1%). The mean age was 73 years ± 11.86. Majority of respondents (92.3%) have a positive perception about old people's home. Above half (55.8%) got information about the homes from their children and a good number (34.6%) have spent more than 5 years in the home. Culture, children perspectives and children occupation were the major factors agreed by the elderly influencing their utilization of the old people's homes. There were no statistically significant association between Sociodemographic variables (age, gender, ethnicity) of the respondents and the utilization of the home with 'p' = 0.501.Conclusion and recommendation: Even though the elderly had positive perception about the utilization of the old people's home but their children perspectives had altered their participation in the homes which outrightly affected their health status. The nurses should therefore ensure optimal health of the elderly to improve their participation in the home. Keywords: Utilization, Perception, Old People's Homes, Elderly

Using structured interviews, data were collected from 236 elderly people on the quality of pain experienced; modalities used to manage osteo-arthritic pain; and the effect of such modalities on the pain. The results revealed that most respondents (79.7%) perceived osteo-arthritic pain as being excruciating; occurring all the time (80.9%); and increasing in intensity (68.2%). However, 36.9% asserted that pain was associated with stiffness of swollen joints, while 94.5% indicated that rest relieved the pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) were used by most (93.6%) of the respondents; local balm (ori) by 57.3%; various concoctions (abgo) by 14.7%; and traditional powder (agunmu) by 11.9%. Osteo-arthritic pain is a common condition among the elderly in Nigeri...

Yet the possible mechanisms linking sexual abuse and negative outcomes are understudied. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among self-blame, shame, coping strategies, posttraumatic stress disorder, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. The sample included 147 sexually abused adolescent girls between 14 and 18 years of age. A total of 66% of girls reached clinical score for posttraumatic stress disorder, and 53% reached clinical score for depressive symptoms. Close to half (46%) reported suicidal thoughts in the past 3 months. Shame was found to partially mediate the relationship between self-blame and posttraumatic stress disorder. Shame and depressive symptoms were also found to partially mediate the relationship between self-blame and suicidal ideation. Results suggest that shame is a crucial target in interventions designed for sexually abused adolescent girls.

Such a move has resulted in an increasing number of researchers across disciplines using various types of qualitative software specially designed for managing text and facilitating analysis of qualitative data. However, we feel that limited information is available on the nature and practical use of these programmes in the Irish context. This has led to various misconceptions regarding the use of such programmes. In addition, international literature has highlighted the importance of making the qualitative research process more transparent in terms of describing in detail the analytical procedures applied in qualitative research. This article seeks to open up the debate surrounding qualitative data analysis and provoke discussion about the use of qualitative software packages in educational research. Based on a mixed-methods educational research project involving a substantive qualitative component, this article explores the joy and despair associated with using Qualitative Solutions Research (QSR) Non-numerical Unstructured Data: Indexing, Searching and Theorizing Version 6 ('N6 software'), and aims to dispel some of the myths that exist around using such software.
