The academic field of Kurdish studies has experienced considerable growth in recent years. Compar... more The academic field of Kurdish studies has experienced considerable growth in recent years. Compared to the later decades of the 20th century that were characterized by the scarcity and scattering of resources and researches on Kurdish subjects, today one can find an ever-growing variety of studies in international languages to satisfy his/her own curiosity on this matter. Recent political developments in the region (i.e. the involvement of Kurdish groups in the resistance against the ISIS, the relative self-determination of the Kurds in Syria, the resurgence of armed conflict in Turkey since 2015 after the failure of the so-called “peace process”, and the referendum on the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan in 2017) have raised academic interest and increasingly put the Kurds on the world agenda. La narrazione politica – che sia essa di stampo vittimista o viceversa eroico-resistenziale – dom... more La narrazione politica – che sia essa di stampo vittimista o viceversa eroico-resistenziale – domina il discorso sulla questione curda, rendendo quasi impossibile immaginare che, oltre ai curdi eroici combattenti o vittime di brutali repressioni, ci sia dell’altro. In questa strettoia si trovano schiacciati gli artisti e letterati curdi, che tentano ogni giorno di parlare piu forte del rumore del conflitto. Per questo e tanto piu importante prestare loro ascolto.

This article focuses on the image of the city of Diyarbakir as it is presented in the tv series S... more This article focuses on the image of the city of Diyarbakir as it is presented in the tv series Sultan (28 May 2012 to 29 October 2012). It considers the sense of place as portrayed on screen and assesses the sociopolitical implications of the spatial representations of the tv series. It questions the concept of a real image of the city, as discussed by commentators and viewers of Sultan, to show how ‘public chatter’ (Öncü 2011) about
the show reinforces arbitrary depictions of Diyarbakir. Finally, this article considers how efforts to commodify the city for the tourist market affect Sultan’s depiction of urban space. All traces of political conflict, violence and traumatic memory are erased, while a tacit ‘ethnic hierarchy’ (Scalbert-Yucel 2015) that structures the Turkish mosaic of cultures informs the series.

In questa strettoia si trovano schiacciati gli artisti e letterati curdi che tentano ogni giorno di parlare più forte del rumore del conflitto.

N ella tasca di uno degli arrestati, un mazzetto di carte proteggeva il 'canto' del popolo armeno... more N ella tasca di uno degli arrestati, un mazzetto di carte proteggeva il 'canto' del popolo armeno, Il canto del Pane di Daniel Varujan, ritrovato fra i beni sequestrati, viene pubblicato nel 1921 a Istanbul. Il giovane autore, astro nascente del risorgimento letterario armeno dell'inizio secolo, muore, appena trentenne pochi mesi dopo l'arresto assieme alle altre voci che avrebbero potuto denunciare al mondo ciò che stava per accadere nelle terre dell'Armenia storica. I versi di quel libro raccontano la rottura traumatica fra una gente e la propria terra, fra gli armeni, le pianure coltivate a grano, le montagne dell'Anatolia orientale, dalla Cilicia al Monte Ararat. L'Ararat, la montagna sacra sulla quale leggenda vuole si sia arenata l'arca di Noè dopo il diluvio, ricopre un ruolo fondamentale nell'immaginario culturale armeno (si veda ad esempio il film Ararat di Atom Egoyan, 2002), ma la sua imponente silhouette vista da Yerevan ricorda ogni giorno agli abitanti dell'Armenia che quasi tutto ciò che resta della loro memoria, storica e culturale, giace al di là del confine inaccessibile fra Armenia e Turchia, preda della dimenticanza, del tempo e del silenzio imposto da cent'anni di negazionismo turco. Ai massacri e alle deportazioni del 1915 di un milione e mezzo di Armeni dall'Anatolia centrale e orientale, è seguito la mordacchia imposta sull'eredità culturale armena. La filosofia Kemalista alla base del nuovo stato turco, sorto dalle ceneri dell'Impero Ottomano, applicava alla lettera i dettami del nazionalismo europeo che i leader intellettuali kemalisti avevano studiato e conosciuto a Parigi o a Londra. Uno stato per una nazione, con una sola lingua e una sola memoria condivisa. Non c'è spazio per alcun tipo di pluralismo e tutto ciò che fa emergere tracce di un passato altro va eliminato. Laddove c'era un nome di paese, di fiume o di collina in lingua armena o curda, un nuovo nome turco lo sostituiva. La confisca dei beni dei deportati, così come la loro sostituzione in aree cruciali industriali e commerciali apriva il varco a una nuova classe imprenditoriale turca.
