What are their experiences of learning the Dutch language and the current civic integration system? How do they get information about opportunities for participation and how do they interact with the government bodies they encounter in their search for employment or joining the education system? The research points out various issues in Dutch participation policy and makes recommendations for improving its responsiveness in a number of areas. The research was carried out at the request of the Social and Cultural Planning Office by Ilse van Liempt (UU) and Richard Staring (EUR).

In this paper, we explore how recently arrived Syrian refugees cope with these regulatory practices by the national government and how their process of homemaking evolves in the new environments assigned to them. The article draws on qualitative data, including sedentary and walkalong interviews and pictures taken by recently arrived Syrian refugees in different Dutch cities. It shows how daily routines are vital for the social incorporation of refugees and how specific places can harm, but also matter, for processes of homemaking. Refugees actively find "places of restoration"-both within their new locality and beyond-and it is both the claim to belong as well as the claim to exert control over their own lives that plays an important role in newly arrived Syrians' homemaking processes.

This study focuses on increasing our understanding of the different pathways converts take during... more This study focuses on increasing our understanding of the different pathways converts take during conversion to Islam. It looks specifically at the following research question: "How do the pathways of converts involved in jihadist movements differ from those of converts who are not, in terms of their life prior to Islam, their conversion experience and the form of involvement with the Islamic community after conversion?" This question is addressed using semi-structured interviews with a diverse group of 26 Dutch converts to Islam. Results show that there are many similarities, yet also some differences in the pre-conversion lives of the converts we studied, in how they experienced the conversion itself and their involvement with Islamic communities after their conversion. The differences we found, emerged largely from how the respondents shaped and experienced their lives as Muslims. Here we noted not just the important role of the social milieu in which the converts find themselves, and how their surroundings react to their new identities, but also the influence of their own agency in terms of their reactions (or lack thereof) to perceived injustice and their efforts at self-study. Importantly, our study also highlights the fluidity and heterogeneity of the postconversion experience. Just as Muslims should not be seen as a homogenous group, so too should care be taken to realise that converts' outlook on their religion can and does change over time, sometimes showing quite dramatic fluctuations from Salafi-Jihadist to non-believer. We hope that our study provides insights into conversion to Islam in general, that it helps address why some converts become involved with jihadist movements, but also that it underlines the importance of treating converts to Islam not as a potential security threat, but as a diverse group of individuals with different and evolving perceptions of their religion and their roles within it. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

this chapter charts the development of cultural criminology in the netherlands. it starts by cont... more this chapter charts the development of cultural criminology in the netherlands. it starts by contextualizing the emergence of Dutch cultural criminology against the backdrop of the 'neo-positivist turn' and the rise of 'control talk' that took place in the netherlands during the mid-1980s. it then continues by pointing out some of the key differences between British and Dutch cultural criminology. in particular, it charts how the cultural perspective in twenty-first century Dutch criminology emerged out of a very particular set of disciplinary influences, including a rich tradition in ethnic and migration studies that holds a more anthropologically informed notion of culture. Finally, attention turns to methodology. Stressing the importance of empirical, comparative, and interestingly certain quantitative approaches, the authors propose a new research agenda that seeks to shift the future focus of (Dutch) cultural criminology away from studies of transgressive behavior towards more critical and political themes.

Toch is relatief weinig bekend over de achtergrond van de daders, de situaties waarin zij verkeren ten tijde van hun delict en de keuzes die ze maken voor, tijdens en na de overval. In dit rapport wordt aan de hand van uitvoerige gesprekken met 43 gedetineerde overvallers een beeld geschilderd van drie typen dader. Naast de voorbereiding, uitvoering en vlucht, wordt ingegaan op de criminele carrieres van de verschillende overvallers, de doelen die zij nastreven, hun ideeenwereld, hun onderlinge verhoudingen en de bindingen die zij hebben met 'burgers'.

Dit rapport bevat de bevindingen van een onderzoek onder (voormalige) alleenstaande minderjarige ... more Dit rapport bevat de bevindingen van een onderzoek onder (voormalige) alleenstaande minderjarige vreemdelingen die onrechtmatig in Nederland verblijven. Het doel van dit rapport is te voorzien in wetenschappelijke kennis over de leefomstandigheden van deze (voormalige) amv's. Een rapport als dit staat en valt met de bereidheid van de jongeren om inzage in hun wereld te bieden. Onze dank gaat dan ook bovenal uit naar de jongeren in Nederland en in Sierra Leone die ons te woord hebben willen staan en die ons op verschillende manieren behulpzaam zijn geweest bij het onderzoek. We hebben veel jongeren kunnen spreken dankzij de bemiddeling van allerlei instellingen en particuliere organisaties die zich op enigerlei wijze inzetten voor jongeren zonder verblijfsdocumenten. Gezien het aantal instellingen en organisaties die voor het onderzoek benaderd zijn, is het onmogelijk om ze hier allemaal bij naam te noemen. We willen een uitzondering maken voor Samah, een inmiddels opgeheven landelijke belangenorganisatie voor jonge asielzoekers. Zij hebben het ons mogelijk gemaakt ook onderzoek te verrichten onder teruggekeerde jongeren in Freetown, Sierra Leone. We willen hen en alle andere organisaties bedanken. Een deel van hen heeft in het verleden een geldige verblijfsvergunning gehad, van een deel is het asielverzoek afgewezen en een deel is zonder geldige verblijfstitel binnengekomen. De onbekendheid van/ met deze groep en de marginale positie ervan werken speculaties in de hand over criminaliteit door illegalen. Ook wordt een relatie verondersteld tussen illegale binnenkomst en mensensmokkel. Voor de kwantitatieve analyse is gebruik gemaakt van politieregistraties van illegale vreemdelingen die werden staandegehouden in de periode 1997-2000. De gegevens werden aangeleverd door de 25 politieregio’s en zijn de beste beschikbare bron. Deze cijfers zijn ook de basis voor de schatting van het totaal aantal illegale vreemdelingen in Nederland.
