Vanessa Redgrave is an English actress and political activist. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Julia (1977).

Her parents were actors Michael Redgrave (Michael Scudamore Redgrave) and Rachel Kempson, and her paternal grandparents were actors Roy Redgrave and Margaret Scudamore. She is a sister of actors Corin Redgrave and Lynn Redgrave.

Vanessa is married to Italian actor Franco Nero. She has had two children, actresses Natasha Richardson and Joely Richardson, with her first husband, director and producer Tony Richardson; and a son, screenwriter and filmmaker Carlo Gabriel Nero, with Franco. Her grandson is actor Micheál Richardson, who is Natasha’s son.

Vanessa’s paternal grandfather was Roy Redgrave (born George Ellsworthy Redgrave, the son of George Augustus Redgrave and Zoe Beatrice Elsworthy Pym). Roy was born in Lambeth, Surrey, England. He later moved to Australia, where he became a silent film actor. Vanessa’s great-grandfather George was the son of Cornelius Redgrave and Alice Harriet Tilley. Zoe was the daughter of Edward Elsworthy Pym and Anna Nicholson.

Vanessa’s paternal grandmother was Margaret “Daisy” Scudamore (born Daisy Bertha Mary Scudamore, the daughter of William George Scudamore and Clara Linington). Margaret was born on Portsea Island, Hampshire, England. William was the son of William Scudamore and Mary Bascombe/Bascomb.

Vanessa’s maternal grandfather was Eric William Edward Kempson (the son of Frederick Robertson Kempson and Julia Madeleine Jay). Eric was born in Hereford, Herefordshire, England. Frederick was the son of William Brooke Kempson and Elizabeth Robertson. Julia was the daughter of James Jay.

Vanessa’s maternal grandmother was Beatrice Hamilton Ashwell (the daughter of Laurence Thomas Ashwell and Henrietta Maria Kingham). Beatrice was born in Wandsworth, London, England. Laurence was the son of Davis Ashwell and Sarah.
