He has also been credited as Tom Janes. He founded RAW Studios, a comic book publisher.
Thomas is the son of Cynthia, an antiques dealer, and Michael Elliott, a genetic engineer. He has a daughter with his former wife, actress Patricia Arquette.
Thomas has said:
…I’m part Irish and Scottish, a little German Jew on my mothers side and some Blackfoot Indian on my fathers. turns out P[atricia Arquette] has some Scottish in her as well, so that’s why we all wore kilts at the wedding!
No evident Blackfoot Native American or German Jewish ancestry appears on family trees of Thomas Jane.
Thomas’ paternal grandfather was Thomas Wright Bendix Elliott (the son of William Johnston Elliott and Edith McElroy). Thomas’ grandfather Thomas was born in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey. William was the son of George Washington Elliott and Mary Wilson, whose parents were English. Edith was the daughter of Robert Greenwood McElroy, who was Irish; and of Margaret Everett.
Thomas’ paternal grandmother was Margaret J. Lynch (the daughter of Edward Vincent Lynch and Henrietta Maria Acker). Margaret was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Edward was the son of Irish parents, James Lynch, from County Roscommon, and Catherine J. Horan. Henrietta was the daughter of Henry G. Acker and Emma, who was an English immigrant.
Thomas’ maternal grandfather was Ezra Leon Shiver (the son of William Lafayette Shiver and Lula Mae Johnston). Ezra was born in Alabama, and had deep roots in the U.S. William was the son of Abijah Shiver and Georgia Ann Senn. Lula was the daughter of Thomas Ezra Johnston and Mary Jane Lee.
Thomas’ maternal grandmother was Annie Lee Faulk (the daughter of William Hiram Faulk and Arrie Lee Shiver). Annie was born in Alabama, and had deep lines in the U.S. William was the son of Oscar Lee Faulk and Nancy Jane Roberson. Arrie was the daughter of Joel Jackson Shiver and Shady Senn.

Thomas’ paternal grandfather was Thomas Wright Bendix Elliott (the son of William Johnston Elliott Sr. and Edith McElroy). Thomas was born in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey. Thomas’ paternal grandmother was Margaret J. Lynch (the daughter of Edward Vincent Lynch and Henrietta Maria Acker). Margaret was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Thomas’ maternal grandparets were blood related.
I think Thomas assumed that he has “German Jew” ancestry given the name of his maternal grandfather ‘Ezra Leon Shiver’, but it is not the case. The Shiver’s line ends in North Carolina, and the surname is more likely of English origin. His maternal side is of Colonial Stock from the south, mostly of English/British origin. Also, I did not found any Native American ancestors, and I think it would be less likely to come from his father’s side, which is made up of more recent European immigrants.
So, Thomas’ ethnicity: English, some Irish, smaller amounts of Scottish, Swiss-German and French
“Shiver” is not an English surname at all.
According to a Wikitree, it’s an anglicization of “Shafer”. I’d trust that:

He has ancestors from North/South Carolina that are hotbeds of mixed-race ethnic groups, but if so he would be very negligible.
About the “Blackfoot” claim.
Ok, I just search the surname in Google, it said: “the surname Shiver is an altered form of the English and Irish surname Chivers, which itself is derived from the Anglo-Norman French word “chivere” or “chevre,” meaning “goat”. But I guess it could be German.
What do you mean with “hotbeds of mixed-race ethnic groups” ?? I’m interested in that knowledge.
All them claim this magical Amerindian ancestry for some reason.
Maybe his grandmother?

The couple (Jane’s presumed parents) in that obituary, Michael and Cynthia Elliott, lives in Germantown, Maryland.
In case these are the correct people, I’ll leave this here for the future.
Possible paternal grandparents:
Thomas W. Bendix Elliott (the son of William J. Elliott and Edith McElroy). William was likely the son of George W. Elliott and Mary Wilson, whose parents were English. Edith was the daughter of Robert McElroy, who was Irish, and of Margaret Everett.
Margaret J. Lynch (the daughter of Edward V. Lynch and Henrietta Acker). Edward was the son of Irish parents.

On his website’s message board back in the day, Jane said he has a small amount of German Jewish ancestry.
Interesting. Is it still available to read?
Shockingly, yes.
