Sonja was born and raised in upstate New York, the daughter of Sandra and Dennis Tremont. She has a daughter with her former husband John Adams Morgan, who was a sailor, Olympic champion, and founder of financial entity Morgan Joseph. John was the son of banker Henry Sturgis Morgan, and the great-grandson of businessperson J. P. Morgan.

Sonja’s paternal grandfather was Kenneth John Tremont (the son of John Peter Tremont and Mary Moran). Kenneth was born in East Schodack, New York.
