Rick James was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. His songs included “Give It to Me Baby,” “Super Freak,” “Fire & Desire,” and “Ebony Eyes.” He was also known as Ricky Matthews.
He was the son of Mabel “Betty” (Sims), a dancer and numbers runner, and James Ambrose Johnson, Sr. His father was born in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. His mother was born in Rowan County, North Carolina. Rick was raised by his mother. He had two children with singer and songwriter Syville Morgan; and a son with his former wife Tanya Hijazi.
Rick’s father stated that he had Native American ancestry.
Rick’s paternal grandfather was Leroy Johnson (the son of Sherwood Johnson and Josephine “Josie” Nelson). Leroy was born in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. Sherwood was born in Williamson County, Tennessee, the son of Moses/Mose Johnson and Margaret “Peggy” Elliott/Johnson. Rick’s great-grandmother Josephine was born in Tennessee, the daughter of a father surnamed Nelson; and of Kittie Wilson.
Rick’s paternal grandmother was named Peggy Lee Fulton. Peggy was born in Davidson County, Tennessee.
Rick’s maternal grandfather was Ben Sims (the son of George Sims and Sarah Steele). Ben was born in Rock Hill, York County, South Carolina.
Rick’s maternal grandmother was Lillie Hall (the daughter of Daniel Hall and Anna Harris). Lillie was born in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.
