Jewish in that it’s more common in that community than it is German, sure. But in this case, probably German. Here is an excerpt from the obituary of his paternal grandmother Walter posted above:

Maybe the grandfather was a convert. But knowing where they appear to be from – rural community in Michigan – that’s probably not the most likely guess.
