She was Miss Universe Australia 2020, and placed in the top ten of Miss Universe 2020. She is the second Miss Universe Australia of Indian descent; the first was Priya Serrao, Miss Australia 2019. She has been a guest co-host of The Project, and appeared on the show Neighbours.

Maria was born in Melbourne, to Indian parents. Her father, Tony Thattil, is from Kochi, Kerala. Her mother is from Kolkata, West Bengal. She was raised Catholic.
