Lyrics Born was born in Tokyo, Japan, to an American mother, Charlotte, and a Japanese father, Takao Shimura. He grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Berkeley, California. He is married to American singer Joyo Velarde.

Lyrics Born’s maternal grandfather was Louis Arzio/Arvizo (the son of Giovanni/John Nicholas Arzio and Ambrosina Maria Domenica Aruffo). Louis was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Italian parents, from Fara San Martino, Chieti, Abruzzo. Giovanni was the son of Enrico Arzio and Maria Eugenia Grossi. Ambrosina was the daughter of Luigi Aruffo and Lucia Di Marino.

Lyrics Born’s maternal grandmother was Minerva/Myrna Marcovich (the daughter of William Marcovitch/Marcovich and Ethel Kliman). Minerva was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to Jewish emigrants. William was born in Galaţi, Romania, the son of Mordechei Marcovich and Bella Obechicka. Ethel was born in Odessa, Kherson, Russian Empire, the daughter of Issac Kliman and Rose Rutman.
