Lee Unkrich is an American director, film editor, and screenwriter. Known for his work with Pixar, he has directed the films Toy Story 3 and Coco (2017).
Lee is the son of Emilie and Robert Unkrich. His father had English, German, French-Canadian, Scottish, Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, Welsh, and Belgian Walloon, ancestry; he converted to Judaism. Lee’s mother was from an Ashkenazi Jewish family. Lee had a Bar Mitzvah ceremony. Lee is married to Laura Century, with whom he has three children. Laura is also Jewish.
Lee’s patrilineal line can be traced to Hans Heinrich Ungerich, who was born, c. 1659, in Rehborn, Palatinate, Bavaria, Germany, the son of Johannes Ungerich and Anna Catharina.
Lee’s paternal grandfather was Lewis/Louis Simon Unkrich (the son of Julius Henry Unkrich and Edith May Carter). Lee’s grandfather Lewis was born in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. Julius was born in Ohio, the son of German parents, Simon Unkrich, from Hochstetten, Bad Kreuznach, Rhineland-Palatinate; and Sophia Kohl, from Bavaria. Lee’s great-grandmother Edith was born in Richfield, Summit, Ohio, the daughter of Lewis Melzer Carter and Sophia Cheetham Ingham, who was English, from Denton.
Lee’s paternal grandmother was Gladys Huberta Stone (the daughter of Hubert Joseph Stone and Cora/Corra Ada Kibby). Gladys was born in Knoxville, Knox, Tennessee. Hubert was born in Ohio, the son of French-Canadian parents, Albert Stone, who was from Lacolle, Saint-Jean, Québec; and Mary Raymond, who also had roots in Saint-Jean. Lee’s great-grandmother Cora was born in Knoxville, the daughter of Hiram Alfred Kibby, whose maternal grandparents were from Vermont; and of Martha Jane Frazer.
Lee’s maternal grandfather was Leo Leopold Leuchtag (the son of Emil Mony Leuchtag and Ethel Kurcz/Kirtz/Kirz). Lee’s grandfather Leo was born in Cuyahoga, Ohio, to Hungarian Jewish parents, from Budapest. Emil was the son of Herman/Hermann Armin Leichtag/Leuchtag and Augusta/Gusti Herz/Hutz, who were from Spišská Stará Ves, Kežmarok District, Prešov Region, Slovakia. Lee’s great-grandmother Ethel was the daughter of Leopold Lipot Kircz/Kirz/Kirtz and Rosa/Roza Hollander, who were from Huncovce and Hrabušice, respectively, in Slovakia.
Lee’s maternal grandmother was Helen Francis Schuster (the daughter of Isaac W. Schuster and Martha M. Jacobs). Helen was born in Pennsylvania. Isaac was the son of Jewish emigrants, Wilhelm “William” Schuster, who was from Shoren, Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany; and Hannah Oppenheimer, who was from Dinxperlo, Aalten, Gelderland, Netherlands. Lee’s great-grandmother Martha was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, also to a Jewish family, the daughter of Jacob Jacobs, who was born in Posen, Wielkopolskie, Poland; and of Hannah Frank.
