Ivan Dixon was an American actor, director, and producer. He starred as Staff Sergeant James Kinchloe on the show Hogan’s Heroes. His roles also included the films Something of Value, Porgy and Bess (1959), A Raisin in the Sun (1961), Battle at Bloody Beach, Nothing but a Man, A Patch of Blue, Where’s Jack?, Suppose They Gave a War and Nobody Came, Clay Pigeon, and Car Wash; the series The New Breed; the TV play The Final War of Olly Winter; and the mini-series Amerika (1986). He directed episodes of the shows Nichols, The Waltons, The Rockford Files, Bret Maverick, The Greatest American Hero, and Magnum, P.I.; the films Trouble Man (1972) and The Spook Who Sat by the Door; and the made-for-tv movie Percy & Thunder. He was active in the civil rights movement, and was president of Negro Actors for Action.

Ivan was the son of Irma L. (McAlister) and Green Ivie Dixon II, who owned a grocery and candy store. His father was born in Roxboro Township, Person County, North Carolina. He was married to Berlie Ray Dixon, until his death, with whom he had four children.

Ivan’s paternal grandfather was Green “Greenie” Dixon (the son of Alexander Dixon and Ella Cea). Green was born in Person County, North Carolina.

Ivan’s paternal grandmother was named Winnie/Windie L.
