Ian Fleming was a British author, journalist, and naval intelligence officer, known as the creator of James Bond. He worked as a journalist before serving in British Naval Intelligence during WWII, where he gained experience that later influenced his writing. After the war, he worked for The Sunday Times while beginning his career as a novelist. In 1953, He published Casino Royale, introducing the character James Bond, a British intelligence agent. He wrote twelve Bond novels and two collections of short stories, combining espionage, adventure, and elements of Cold War politics. He also wrote children’s novel Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang.
Ian was the son of Evelyn Beatrice Sainte Croix “Eve” (Rose) and Major Valentine Fleming, a politician and soldier. His father was born in Newport-on-Tay, Fife, Scotland, and was killed in WWI, by German shellfire at Gillemont Farm, near Épehy, Somme, France, on 20 May 1917. His mother was born in Kensington, Chelsea, London. Ian’s brother was author Peter Fleming.
Ian’s paternal grandfather was Robert Fleming (the son of John Fleming, and of a mother surnamed McIntosh). Robert was born in Dundee, Dundee City, Scotland, and was a financier and philanthropist, who founded investment firm Robert Fleming & Co. in 1873.
Ian’s paternal grandmother was Sarah Kate Hindmarsh (the daughter of Marshall Kirkland Hindmarsh and Mary Kirby Baylis). Sarah was born in Grantown on Spey, Highland, Scotland. Marshall was the son of John Hall Hindmarsh and Sarah Marshall. Ian’s great-grandmother Mary was born in England, the daughter of John Baylis and Sarah Kirby.
Ian’s maternal grandfather was George Alfred Sainte/Saint Croix Rose (the son of Sir Philip Rose, 1st Baronet, and of Margaretta Ranking). George was was a Captain in the service of the Royal Buckinghamshire Militia/King’s Own, and a Justice of the Peace for Berkshire. Sir Philip Rose was a solicitor, and the first recognised agent for the Conservative Party. He was a Knight Commander of the Turkish Order of the Medjidie. Ian’s great-grandmother Margaretta was the daughter of Robert Ranking and Elizabeth Amos.
Ian’s maternal grandmother was Beatrice Quain (the daughter of Sir Richard Quain, 1st Baronet, and Isabella Agnes Wray). Beatrice was born in England. Sir Richard was a prominent physician in Ireland. He was the son of John Quain, of Carrigoon; and of Mary Burke, of Mallow. Ian’s great-grandmother Isabella was the daughter of English parents, Capt. George Wray, who was born in Thoralby, Richmondshire, North Yorkshire, and was a Captain in the Bengal European Regiment; and Isabella Wright, who was from Cleasby, Richmondshire.
