Gypsy Rose Lee was an American burlesque entertainer, stripper, vedette, actress, author, and playwright. She was famous for her striptease act. Her memoir Gypsy was adapted into the stage musical of the same name.

Gypsy Rose was the daughter of Rose Evangeline “Mama Rose” Thompson Hovick and John Olaf “Jack” Hovick, who was a newspaper-advertising salesman, and a reporter at The Seattle Times. Her father was born in Crookston, Polk County, Minnesota, to Norwegian parents. Her mother was born in Wahpeton, Richland County, North Dakota. Her sister was actress, dancer, stage director, and memoirist June Havoc (born Ellen Evangeline Hovick), who was born in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Gypsy Rose had a son, writer, director, and producer Erik Lee Preminger, with Austrian-born American theatre and film director, film producer, and actor Otto Preminger.
