Bablah, was his father of Ukrainian descent?
I checked and it’s not the big city of Mykolaiv (which isn’t even in Crimea) but Nikolaivka or Nikolievka that is listed on his Ellis Island records (whose image I can’t seem to find because their website sucks) and border crossings. It looks like Dena’s real name was Evdokia Kolesnikova or Kolesnichenko.
I can tell you he had brown eyes and brown hair and a full beard, but not his ethnicity (it just says Russian everywhere). If they were indeed Lutheran, he might have been of German descent since Germans living there were Lutheran.
What makes you think he was Jewish? Wikipedia doesn’t mention it. And the Jewish population in Montana is literally under one thousand…
Ah, here’s something about it… from a 1950s newspaper… lol…
It mentions that his mother was Catholic and his father Lutheran (talking about his marriage to Dinah Shore, who was Jewish).

Dave, Ill leave Jewish off until I can confirm it.
